  • Is Europe on the verge of a major shift? Will supporters of Vladimir Putin and friends of China soon have more power in the European Parliament?
According to polls ahead of the European elections, right-wing populists and nationalists are attracting more voters.
But Europe’s far-right is also seeing divisions, between the “Alternative for Germany”, AfD, and the French National Rally Party around Marine Le Pen. How extreme do EU voters want the union to be?
What alliances are being forged? Ursula von der Leyen, the Conservative President of the EU Commission, is openly courting the votes of the Italian head of government Giorgia Meloni and her ultra-right “Fratelli d'Italia”.
On To the Point, we ask: “Europe's far-right: Tempting partners for conservatives”?
    Our guests:
Nadine Lindner is the Berlin correspondent for Germany’s Deutschlandfunk, specialized in East German politics and the AfD Party.
Michaela Küfner is DW News’ Chief Political Editor
Burkhard Birke is a freelance journalist. He has previously worked as a correspondent in Paris and Brussels.
    Chapters:
01:30 What did the traditional parties do wrong?
02:30 People are looking for direction; they feel left alone
03:00 There are two groups on the far-right. Will they merge after the EU elections?
05:00 The upcoming EU elections are crucial
05:30 Will the far-right become even more mainstream after the European elections?
06:30 AfD leadership is under fire
07:30 There is no tumbling in AfD support in the polls
09:20 The AfD is in “panic mode” and publicly discredited
10:30 Voters are looking for a more “authoritarian style” of politics
11:40 The AfD is moving even more to the right
13:10 Will the firewall between Conservatives and AfD remain?
15:20 Why is Marine Le Pen rejecting the AfD?
16:13 The AfD is not useful for Marine Le Pen
    16:40 Is Giorgia Meloni pro-European?
18:40 Ursula von der Leyen seems to be reluctant to cooperate with Marine Le Pen
20:00 Ursula von der Leyen’s “Green Deal” has lost its meaning
21:20 In the EU, compromises are a must
23:00 It will be more difficult to govern the EU after the EU elections
24:00 The EU urgently needs a reform
25:00 The upcoming elections will also be a national referendum

The terms left and right wing were coined during the French Revolution. The radicals called the Montagnards were sitting on the left side/wing of the French National Assembly room and the half radicals called the Girondins were sitting on the right side/wing of the room. Both the Montagnards and Girondins belonged to the same organization(a WEF of sorts called the Jacobin club) and have previously worked together. They continued working together, but the Girondins were more moderate, advocating for less violence.
Far right just means you are not in the club, not working with "them".

I always wondered why we always hear complaints about the extreme right but never about the extreme left. Why is the extreme right gaining ground? Easy, if governments do not pay attention to the well-being and prosperity of their citizens, this feeds the extreme right. Rubbish government is the problem. Right extremes? It is the green-red parties who has extreme politics on their agenda. Since they want to only support electricity that only exist sometimes, wind power and solar cells, I guess they want EU to have electricity only sometimes… so EU can be more like Africa… Nuclear power is climate smart and it exists 24-7 about 365 days a year. But the green parties in EU are against nuclear power… they are against climate smart technology… they are against themselfs… against their own politics… isn’t that extreme???

Burkhard Birke is the one person on the pannal who almost gets it, the swing towards the right is a question of identity, Europeans believe that their identity is being diluted by mass immigration from countries with different cultures and attitudes, couple this with the grand economic failures of the Eurozone project and the attitude that the only answer to any crises within the EU is 'more Europe' (often led by the same people who created the crisis in the first place) . My advice to the left / centre left is the same as it always has been.
Acknowledge that the cordon sanitaire is broken, has been broken for at least the last ten years and that it is extremely unlikely that you will ever be able to put it back. Like it or not hard right politicians in the EU are here to stay for the foreseeable future.
Acknowledge that Wilders, Le-Pen, Orban et al are not the knuckle dragging thugs of the 80s far right movements in Europe.and are instead sophisticated political operators that can go up against the best that the EU has to offer e.g. the likes of Michel Barnier, Guy Verhofstadt, Ursula Von der Lynne etc and come on out on top.
Resign yourself to the necessity of doing deals with them and use this opportunity to curb their worst impulses, at the same time acknowledging the legitimate social concerns of their voter bases.
