How to Make Pastel Hair Last Longer | 5 Tips + DIY Color Conditioner

- ► Today I'm sharing 5 tips that can help prolong the color of your pastel hair. Whether it's pink, like mine, or any other pastel color, it usually fades really quickly! So, I hope these tips can help you so you don't have to dye your hair so often. I also included a colored conditioner DIY!

As a colorist for 25+ years, I would suggest you put the color in a shampoo not the conditioner. The conditioner is designed to close down the cuticle of the hair meaning the color you add will just sit on the hair. On the other hand, with any shampoo out there, the products will actually cause the hair to swell a little bit and open the cuticle, allowing that color to actually penetrate the hair shaft just a little bit. So shampoo once with regular shampoo, then do a second one with the colored shampoo and leave on 5 min. rinse and then condition to close down the cuticle. You should find better results using this method.
That makes sense. I wonder why so many companies make colored daily conditioners and only a few make shampoos! I’ll definitely give that a try though; thanks for the tip!

Thats interesting because I’ve tried making shampoos with strong pink in and it’s always washed out the dye already in my hair and not deposited anything but if I put a tiny bit of pink in my conditioner and leave it like a mask and rinse out I can see the difference. Am I doing something wrong? Is it because I’m using semi permanent dye?
I actually need to disagree the shampoo will 100% wash out what you already have and wont deposit any color. Besides shampoo opening up the cuticle shampoos main purpose is to get rid of oil and dirt thats what the surfactants in it do so it will also just wash out any color. I Just tried it last week ago and I basically turned back blonde. It works with Conditioner though! Thats what I did to get my pink back ^^
but that is exactly why we like using conditioner lol. We want it temporary!!

3 questions:
1: could this be done with a mask instead of conditioner?
2: how long does the bottle stay good?
3: if you are tired of the color, do you do a bleach bath or..?
I want to buy some arctic fox dye's and this would be a great way to keep it up.
I feel like it would work just as well with a hair mask! Not too sure how long the bottle stays good for because I use it all up pretty quickly. And, lastly, yes I do a bleach bath sometimes if I want to switch the color but it hasn't faded out enough.
My bleached is at least level 10 and im really wanting a pastal pink so im doing it sunday night thankyou for your tips

How do you apply it to your hair? I notice that I tend to miss some spots it looks a little patchy at times.

Hi! I have pastel purple hair and I want to do the diy conditioner tip but I was wondering. Have you noticed if it stains your shower? I live with roommates and I think they wouldn’t like that.

I want to know is the conditioner that u use to dilute is silicone-free? I heard for pastel color silicone-free conditioner works best but around my area it's really hard to find one. Btw, I freaking love the color of your hair
I've also heard that silicone-free works best but I just use whatever I can find, which usually has silicone.
How about swimming? In summer days I swim every day. Do you know how salt water effect the pink hair color?
Swimming definitely makes the color fade faster! Maybe try using a swimming cap

You can! That would basically just be like dyeing your hair
Do you mostly apply the conditioner to the tips or do you do your roots too? If you do apply it to your head, do you find that it gets oily more easily?

Thanks! I apply it everywhere! I naturally have very oily hair but since it's now bleached, I'm able to apply conditioner to my roots without it getting oily

How long have you had your pink hair for and how long do you wanna keep it for?
It's been a year and a half since I first dyed it pink but I've changed up my hair color during that time. I always end up going back to pink though so I'll probably keep it for a long time!

I get my pink conditioner from Sally Beauty. It is too dark so I mix it with white conditioner. The bottle is only $10 and it lasts a looong time because I am diluting it. I do not dye my pink hair at all! Just the pink conditioner.
What about developer? Does your hair dye not need developer?
Nope! I only use developer when I bleach my roots
My hair is dark brown and I want to dye my hair red but with mixing it with henna, would I still get the color?

Any conditioner will work as long as it's white (so you have a better idea of how the color will turn out)
