  • A Johannesburg man is living large in the smallest possible way. Andrew Arnott, a 3D visualiser at an architecture firm calls a former ice cream van, 400cc diesel powered Piaggio Ape tuk-tuk, home.
“Would you like a tour?”, says Arnott gesturing to a small wooden clad extension on the rear of the rickety three-wheeler. The tour takes a total time of two minutes.
For 180 days Arnott has been living in the driveways of friends and families in the back of his tiny vehicle, calling this home, using the adventure as a way to also raise money for an animal welfare organisation called Woodrock. “Am I a hobo? That’s a question I get asked a lot”, jokes Arnott while sitting on the bed of his 4.5m squared micro home. “I’m not a hobo, stay in friends driveways and I offer them money. If they don’t want to take the money then the money is donated to Woodrock”, he continues.
The idea to trade a traditional home for a micro mobile one came from Arnott’s desire to find a way to save money. “ I was really interested in the tiny house movement, but even that was a pricey project to begin, so I thought how small can I go?”, he says.
Inside, his home has all the basic amenities, a gas cooker, a kitchen sink, a toilet tucked under his bed, artwork hangs on the walls and space for a pantry.
“This is just a year thing hopefully, but maybe two at the most, let’s see how it goes. It’s turned out to be a lot more fun than I thought it would be”, he continues.
