      ​@@Sorarse Yeah, a tail strike means this plane was above 15 degrees nose up. I mean, the pilot can pitch up more than that at enough speed, but at 100 knots? If they had aborted maybe they could have damaged or lost the front wheel, but I think they took a higher risk by proceeding with the take off. By proceeding with it, they risked crashing three times: Not getting airborn and shooting the runway, getting airborn and stalling for good, or having an unstable landing.

    The last time I was on a plane, it was about 60% full and they had to get a whole bunch of people to move to different seats for the takeoff, saying the balance had to be right

      Center of gravity, or CG is critical on an aircraft. If it's out of whack, the plane can crash.

      @Niklas Enblom.. Yes,thank goodness Niklas! As a layman though,aside from the uneven distribution of weight inside the plane plus the fact I'm no pilot...to my mind it was absolute madness not to abort the takeoff immediately that the tail end of the plane was scraping along the runway!✈🛩😊

      @@kristinejames9812 [Note: I m a mechanical engineer and aviation fan, not an aviation expert] It's not clear from this how close they were to V1. Once you pass that, the aircraft will crash if it does not take off. However, even if they were already past V1 when the anomaly was first noticed, they should have requested to return immediately after takeoff, not 4 minutes later!

    The rule I was taught was "A nose heavy plane flies poorly, a tail heavy plane flies once!" These guys were idiots to press past V-1 with no pitch control and damn lucky to have made it back safely.

      @@peteconrad2077 To Make it back could be evidence of genius, To push through V-1 with a control problem is something that most would never do. Perhaps they just knew they had the superior skill set needed. But the rules around V1 exist for a reason. But I am sure they were smart guys to be in this job requires it, however, even smart folks can sometimes make a bad call.

      @@donaldvincent there is no requirement to stop below V1, a mistake laymen often make. If your aircraft has got airborne then you have a big job getting it back down especially with full up trim. Had they tried to land and derogate against the trim, they would likely have used a great deal of runway, very likely all of it and ended up with a disaster. This wasn’t a simple stop from V1 as you’d know if you had any understanding of the situation.

    Thanks to this channel, I just realized why the passenger seats are allocated in order to balance the plane. From now, I can't blame the company when I am seated far from my friends despite of having free seats close to me.

    Oh my God dude. I haven't even ever received aircraft pilot training but just from following this channel my immediate reaction in that cockpit would've been to drop engine power as soon as the nose started to move upwards before reaching V1. I was almost screaming at my youtube screen cut engine power.

    Very negligent piloting to continue to altitude after a tail strike, the bulkhead could have cracked and caused explosive decompression at flight level destroying the aircraft and killing everyone.

      Same thing happened to a JAL 747. The aft pressure bulkhead failed and destroyed flight controls. Catastrophic crash followed after the pilots tried for several minutes to regain control.

      @@stevecowart395 and National Air in Afganistan. Improperly loaded MATVs and Cougar MRAPs smashed through the rear bulkhead, KOing the FDR and CVR then destroying the jackscrew, so the plane basically nosed up and pancaked after landing. Its got a video here on youtube.....

    Imagine being a passenger with good pattern recognition noticing that the passenger distribution is unbalanced and you try to tell the flight crew it's not safe to take off. They'd laugh at you like you're a conspiracy theorist...

      Then what is the point of ground crew and gate agents and all other airline staff? Most likely one of the staff in charge had a "engeneerment" moment, and considered it would be a good idea to arrange the passengers like that so they and their luggage could be deplaned quickly, thus a quicker turnaround. Unfortunately the thought process stopped before the load and balance issue.

      @@bogdan_n AS far i understand,the ramp agent gave the captain a correct load and trim sheet. The remaining passengers where positioned across the whole plane,according the new load sheet. But the captain didn't repositioned the passengers according the load sheet 4:24

      @@bogdan_n The pilots are supposed to doublecheck the load sheet for errors. It is not foolproof to have one person on the ramp writing down numbers on the sheet as they load the bins and fuel. More sets of eyes means there is less likely to be a problem. The pilots doublechecking the sheet doesn't make the ramp crew or gate crew obsolete, and your suggestion as such shows you've never worked in the industry.

      Double (or treble) checking the loadsheet does not help here. The loadsheet presumably was arithmetically correct, it just didn't reflect how the aircraft was actually loaded. This is something the pilots cannot check from the cockpit and is normally signed for by the ramp agent. It would seem that the cabin crew were not told of the new seating plan.

      @@dasboot5903 At 100 knots when there was an uncommanded pitch-up, they were not past the point of no return. It is at that point that the decided to continue in the face of an anomaly.

      if there wasn't enough runway left to adequately stop, it was the choice against a known crash or a potential one. The potential should always win.

      @@ArthurDentZaphodBeeb You never abort after V1, unless there's convincing evidence your plane won't be controllable once airborne (e.g. fire, wing falls off, etc).
      Once you hit V1, you're committed to takeoff, (almost) no matter what. This is how you're trained.

      @@HarryRyanJohns The APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) is located on the tail. So a tail strike could slightly or severely damage the APU. In this case, if it was me, the smartest decision will be declaring a Pan-Pan call and fly back to the airport. It’ll take a while to do all checklists for this emergency possible hydraulic failure. I know this because I’m a real Student Pilot

      @@HarryRyanJohns Yes you are right the APU isn't in use in flight unless something is wrong (Or they'll use the Ram Air Turbine [RAT] instead of the APU) but After landing you still need the APU for power as well. Maybe the tail strike damaged something else? You never know what a tail strike damages

    Ex cabin crew here - this case study is a perfect example of what can go wrong when the passengers freely swap their seats before take-off. We're usually notified by the flight crew during briefing if the change of a seat is allowed only upon take-off. Sadly, not many passengers respect that

      Well it was able to fly so that is ruled out. Unsafe to fly that is also ruled out as it climbed to 10K no problem.

      @@randomnav how come nose up at about 100kts? It must be something wrong with weight and balance, and trim setting. Prolonged tail strike? Still safe? Wtf yo, the checklist likely to said “do not pressurize the airplane” and then “Plan to land at the nearest suitable airport”. Because continued pressurization of the airplane can cause further structural damage. No problem my ass. If you can stop the problem on the ground, why risk your life and other people onboard in the air?

      @@EazyDuz18 and unless you have a camera there you have absolutely no idea of the damage. With it why you should return. The sluggishness of the take off should have warned them as well. Basically they kept ignoring warning sign after warning sign.

    I’m glad everyone survived. In other videos I always fear the worst when ATC asks pilots who are in the middle of a crisis “how many souls do you have on board”. That often doesn’t bode well in the end.

      Not unless the hole was inside the pressure vessel. If it was aft of the bulkhead, the main cabin would still pressurize…

      There is a very thick piece of metal, usually a stainless steel plate that is located under the tale and designed to take the brunt of a very light tail strike in the event of over rotation, the "skid plate." This crew obviously had damage beyond the area of the skid plate...

      @@tima.478 To me, it was too much of a coincidence that they whacked it against the runway and immediately had pressurization problems. A tail strike is usually very brief.They ground the tail against the tarmac until the plane reached rotation speed.

    I tried to takeoff in a Cessna 172 once with center of gravity too far aft. When I saw the nose trying to come up before takeoff speed I immediately knew something was wrong and aborted the takeoff. These guys should known there was a problem even before the tail strike.

    That's odd because normally a jet will try to take off by itself if CMD/AP and/or altitude is set prior to takeoff. A common problem in older Learjet's. It wouldn't simply based on load. Something isn't right there

      Thanks, Hank! Remarkably enough, the Concorde did have a little wheel for that purpose. I miss the Concorde and I never got to fly on it.

      I think the 757-300 does have a wheel for avoiding tailstrikes since that aircraft is very long.

      I flew in a DC-4, 20 years after it flew in the Berlin Airlift. It did have a little wheel “back there.” It also had a”pole.” Why a pole? Because it was so frapping overloaded it needed the pole to keep it from sitting on its butt. Had to offload melons and chickens when the pole bowed. Held together w chewing gum.

      @Dennis Wilson It was definitely junk. Amazing it got off the ground at all, but that’s all we had so folks just kept fixing it as the next piece fell off. If you saw it loaded w chickens, pigs, watermelons and people, you would be scratching your head saying WTF? Also had a landing craft (we just called it an “end boat”), probably left over from Normandy, that ferried folks between Rota and Saipan occasionally, when they could get it running. Good times.

    LOVE the hydraulic pump sound effect @6:06! So realistic! I've been on multiple flights where the pilots left the hydraulic boost pump on. So the entire time the aircraft is on APU (after landing, taxi, deplaning, and then before pushback, taxing and take off) you hear that pump constantly cycling.
    That aside, I'm glad to know everyone survived!

    It's pretty outrageous that the captain didn't abort the Takeoff when the tail struck the runway. His ego doesn't belong in this industry.

      He was at the point of no return, he would have over shot the runway if he tried to stop. When he got in the air, he should of turned around and landed straight away.

    Would liked to have heard the exchange between the pilots on the the flight recorder as they rolled down the runway and seen quotes from any official incident report. I would think the pilots would have been disciplined.

      The dispatcher did realize. AS far i understand,the ramp agent gave the captain a correct load and trim sheet. The remaining passengers where positioned across the whole plane,according the new load sheet. But the captain didn't repositioned the passengers according the load sheet 4:24

    If the plane's landing gear had sensors to measure the weight on each leg then the balance could be automatically confirmed while the plane is still on the ground. Is there a reason planes don't have a system like this, or should I apply for a patent?

      Because if you stood on your bathroom scales how can you confirm those scales are accurate? You can’t unless you put a known weight on them each time or get a second pair of scales. You can’t do that with an aircraft before every flight

      @@VideosByMiamiMike I can’t really dumb it down any more for you. Point is you’re relying on single set of sensors to get such a critical value. Anything critical on a plane is backed up. But how nobody is going to add 2 sets of weights scales per landing gear because of the cost and weight added

    It's hard enough for pilots to fly in severe storms, no visibility, technicians making mistakes repairing the plane(s), etc. A huge plane like this has to be loaded by the weight of the passengers & baggage, there are only 83 people on board this flight!
    I would've never known this could happen as well, distributing weight a specific way on such a big plane! Thank God the Pilot turned around & landed!

    I love these very well produced videos. However, there never seems to be information about consequences for those at fault. The ones that survive anyway! By the way, a first officer with only 400 hours when he went right seat? Disaster waiting to happen.
