The way she is possessed by the character, feeling every moment so intensely, the slow sensuality and the anger building too - i couldn't breathe until i started weeping. My god.
Her tempo is slower than Marilyn Horne's and more seductive .Horme is a mezzo so different singers have their own approach . Rise Stevens was famous in this too . Everyone sings it even though SaintSaens' opera gets few performances .

I didn't know she did 19th century operas - I always thought of her as a classical and baroque specialist - she too is a versatile and accomplished musician to match Ms Norman's huge talent.

Usually, I hate it when sopranos (even dramatic sopranos) sing arias from the mezzo-soprano repertoire (they have all the good tunes but they have to steal the poor mezzos' few great arias). But I must admit that Ms Norman's performance is truly impressive. That woman must have two sets of vocal chords, one for each repertoire!

I've never seen a soprano with such big lungs who can sustain the notes for so long and her interpretation is so expressive compared to the rushed version of Callas you can find on youtube with millions of views. I also love it when Delilah goes up to high B flat singing"Je t'aime". Both have very beautiful dramatic soprano voices. I would love to see a live performance of Callas singing it too. I'm sure that would be astonishing.
It's a luxurious rendition, but it borders on plodding. I think Samson would have been asleep by the end of this instead of "up" and ready for action. The Callas version isn't too fast; this is too slow. And although Norman has huge lungs, as you say, she is unable to sing the crucial phrase "Ah! Responds à ma tendresse" all in one breath, but repeats "responds" in order to catch a breath in the middle of the phrase. Very few singers ever sing the aria as it's written, and only Obraztsova and Callas pop in my mind right now. When even the orchestra is compelled to applause and the conservative crowd goes wild. Madame Jessye Norman was not simply a singer, or an Opera Star. She was a phenomena. A Mystic of music and a Grand Dame of Harmony. It shall take another century to see the like. The better part of us shall not be there to experience it.
I've heard 6 different interpretations of this aria.....hers by far is the best. I felt it in a different way than the others. Totally not rushed! Drawn in..... I totally understand the tempo , it engages you. Bravo!!!!!!!!!
To my ears, it's too slow and plodding, and the momentum often comes to a halt. Delilah isn't trying to put Samson to sleep, but to have him awake, "up," and ready for action, The sleep and haircut come after the action. In fact, the tempo is so slow that despite her prodigious lung capacity and long breath, Norman isn't able to sing "Ah responds a me tendresse" as written, all in one breath. She has to repeat "responds" and catch a breath in between. While beautiful in a concert setting, it isn't what Saint-Säens wrote.

I've heard others perform this. Some too fast. Some WAY too fast. All wrong. This is supposed to be a very seductive piece, and must be done slowly, as is correctly done here. I've heard others, but none like this. Here, ladies and gentlemen, is the definitive performance by Jessye Norman. Brava.
regarding tempo, this is certainly supposed to be much faster. As a former classical dancer and still an avid ballet goer, I am very sensitive to overly endulgent speeds which has saturated the world of ballet in the last 30-40 years with monstrously slow tempi. But La Norman's tempo here works beautifully.
I could listen to Jessye all day long. But I were Sampson, and she told me that she loved me with the crazy eyes, I would be out of there like a bat on fire.

Jessye Norman gave EVERYTHING she had on this stage. I thought she was either going to run out of oxygen or drop dead singing one of those notes. So many have fallen short with this aria because the just don't have the breathing technique that Norman has. Never been a big fan of her tone, but had I been there in the audience, I would have given her a standing ovation ... she is total Divaness and the performance was RIVETING! Work Ms. Norman! Legendary Always.

@@giannirizzi1031 I understand what you mean. Nobody says “I love you” at the top of their lungs. Also, Dalila is betraying Samson. But a famous aria can be “highjacked” by a great performer. The meaning is changed. Opera is not the real world. But more like a dream sometimes. Some people would like to say loudly and openly “I love you” to a person they fancy but can’t have. In dreams, they might.

@@giannirizzi1031 Again, I agree it was Samson's line to say. About the high note for a standing ovation: I remember seeing Grace Bumbry at a Met Gala (on TV), singing this aria. She forgot the right words, but remembered the high note. So it went: "Samson, Samson... AAAAAAaaaah! Je t'aime!" That was so funny (for me)😄 ;-)

A Mystic of music and a Grand Dame of Harmony. It shall take another century to see the like. The better part of us shall not be there to experience it.
I've heard 6 different interpretations of this aria.....hers by far is the best. I felt it in a different way than the others. Totally not rushed! Drawn in..... I totally understand the tempo , it engages you. Bravo!!!!!!!!!

To my ears, it's too slow and plodding, and the momentum often comes to a halt. Delilah isn't trying to put Samson to sleep, but to have him awake, "up," and ready for action, The sleep and haircut come after the action. In fact, the tempo is so slow that despite her prodigious lung capacity and long breath, Norman isn't able to sing "Ah responds a me tendresse" as written, all in one breath. She has to repeat "responds" and catch a breath in between. While beautiful in a concert setting, it isn't what Saint-Säens wrote.

regarding tempo, this is certainly supposed to be much faster. As a former classical dancer and still an avid ballet goer, I am very sensitive to overly endulgent speeds which has saturated the world of ballet in the last 30-40 years with monstrously slow tempi. But La Norman's tempo here works beautifully.

How Gratifying to hear & see Jessye Norman again!! I first got to know her in the late '70's at the Annual "Cabrillo Music Festival" in Aptos, CA ~~~ in her early~years ~~~ What a Beautiful and Gratifying "Deja Vu"! Karlos Bernto N.
Jessye Norman gave EVERYTHING she had on this stage. I thought she was either going to run out of oxygen or drop dead singing one of those notes. So many have fallen short with this aria because the just don't have the breathing technique that Norman has. Never been a big fan of her tone, but had I been there in the audience, I would have given her a standing ovation ... she is total Divaness and the performance was RIVETING! Work Ms. Norman! Legendary Always.
