    Very cool video. I've owned many E39's and have never seen one with active steering. More common to see on the E60, and even then it's a rare option.

      BIMMER ZEIT I have an E60 550i, pretty much on any other model besides the 550i and the M5 you have to choose it manually. For instance, most common 5-series (525,530, 535, 540 etc) will come with common steering and no special audio, parking sensors, the stupid Oil cooler

    Love it in the e60, felt it working going over a giant rain puddle, felt the electric motor kick me back into lane.

    Ha! That explains why when I was driving in a snowy, muddy, frozen rain road, my car kept going straight! I thought I was a brilliant driver! :s It's very noticeable in the winter, but I don't feel a difference in the summer. Parking is still a pain in the E39! :s

    No wonder the E39 is so overly steady while running on super speeds on the highway, it's amazing engineering

      It was incredibly stable already before active steering so Im really interested how much it could even realistically be improved like that :D

    Hello jhbonarius, even if you keep the hands on the steering wheel, in emergency case, the active steering will turn the wheels if necessary, without feedback for you. the action of the active steering is on the steering rack, not on the steering column.
    As if there is a strong lateral wind, your steering wheel don't move, but the system correcting the trajectory.

    hello brother nice video i just want to ask a question please do answer me
    1.how will the variable steering work i mean that how steering ratio is changed will it be changed by motor that is attached?
    2. my second question is that why are we using planetary gears instead of pinion gear what is the purpose of planetary gears?
    please do answer anyone i am studying mechanical engineering and this our final year project so i need your help
    also if you can link me to different websites, articles,patents that will be great
    Thanks
    i hope someone will answer me.

    "Active steering provides a much more direct steering ratio than a conventional steering system up to a speed about 120 km/h" Can someone explain the meaning of this? 2:05

    • @dubrananc
      @dubrananc  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Because of the proportional ratio between the steerinng wheel and the steering gear. This is the epicyclic gear on the steering gear, (command by an electrical motor) who make turn quicker or lower the steering gear.
      So at low speed 1.7 steering wheel turn will allow u to turn the wheels to the maximum from left to right (multiplied)
      At speed from 120km/h this is the reverse, so the direction is really more direct as a sport car!

    Quick question, my e60 has this issue, active steering inactive, i did the full left to right faulty fix, but the problem is still there, and my steering is heavier to turn. Haven't send it to a mechanic but do you have any assumptions where it's the active steering rack is the problem or something else?

    @Raychow0910 Hello! Wish bmw model have you?
    Why do you need to re initialise? Do you disconnect the battery? if yes for how many time?
    first step (doesn't work for all situation, is effectivly to maintain the steering wheel 2-3 second left same to right, two or tree times.
    Depend of the model, drive the car for few hundreds meters can be enough.
    After that, in other case,after parts replacement, or ECU disconnected, some BMW diagnosis process must be done, let me know what is your case.

    If there is a fault in the active steering can it be disabled or even deleted to return to a conventional system?

    • @marcl637
      @marcl637 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sadly not, it is cheaper to repair it. to replace it with a standard servotronic you basically have to replace all safety systems like ABS, ESP, steering rack, etc. I talked to a mechanic that did the swap an an M3, it cost something between 8000 and 9000€

      The active steering and regular power steering reservoirs look totally different the active steering reservoir is much larger. Look up pictures online of the two reservoirs and look under your hood.

    @Manwithjeep Hello!
    At first, when the car is stop, engine on, turn your steering wheel from left to right, you must have 1.7 rotation, that means with a very little movement on your steering wheel, your front wheels move fast!
    Second, on yuour steering rack, you should have an electric motors, who's acitvate the game gear upon the steering rack. You can also send me the last seven digits of your VIN number, and i will send you your optional list.
    Regards.

      Everyone who will say that to me will have the same first place answer : are your chassis, tyres, wheels alignement in good condition?
      If everything OK, ask to a bmw specialist to done a steering angle sensor initialisation.
      Since something goes wrong inside AS system, you can be sure a message comes up, the AS turn off, and steeering wheel may be no more straight!

      @@jason.arthur.taylor exactly even though it may very well be “better” than me in 99.99% of situations there’s so much more complexity and possible points of failure in this system which could cause serious safety issues in which a conventional system doesn’t have these complexities. Please note that this system is reknown to fail. In the best case, your steering wheel will only send you straight if you turn. In the worst case, the car isn't turning.
    This is actually bad technology.

    • @davidn743
      @davidn743 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As someone who had it fail, the steering wheel will turn upside down. After that it is like a regular car, just with an upside down steering wheel.
