I want to travel to Kusatsu using route 1, is there a way to buy all the tickets online in advance? I think I found ticket for the train, but not for the bus. I won't be using Japan Rail Pass for my stay in Japan...
Hi, when we board the bus at Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi, do we have to tap our Japan IC Card? Or only tap one time when we get off the bus at Kusatsu Bus Terminal?
Hi, you will need to tap twice, once when you board the bus and another time when you disembark. As for where to tap the card, you can see the ladies tapping their card when boarding the bus, just beside the door. When you disembark, tap it beside the driver seat.
Sadly no, tokyo wide pass don't cover JR buses. Only JR East - Nagano, Niigata & JR East - Tohoku pass cover the JR buses. You can find it under item 4 - www.jreast.co.jp/multi/en/pass/tokyowidepass_terms.html
For route 1, if you don't buy any JR East Pass, the train ride itself will cost you 5,570JPY one way and bus fare is 710JPY one way too. (2 ways total cost will be 12,560JPY) If you decided to get a pass, there are 3 options: 1. JR Tokyo Wide 3 days Pass 15,000JPY 2. JR East Nagano, Niigata area 5 days Pass 27,000JPY 3. JR East Tohoku area 5 days Pass 30,000JPY The 3 passes cover both the train and bus ride, it is free. Hope it help...

The bus you can only pay by cash or Japan IC card, IC card will be the preferred payment method, and since no pass is used here.
