very interesting, i've not actually seen a lathe or single skin bay yet. Most of them around Blackpool are brick on outside and brick on edge on the inside.. and they're always usually full of some debris which adds to damp issues. Also i always thought those boards were for tiles only, had no idea you could skim onto them. I really think internal and external wall insulation on older properties will be a big part of construction moving forward, so definitely worth learning it all. Great video
@@tobybeswick36 Hi Toby these timber frame bays are a big problem here in Warwickshire! The XPS panels have many uses but are ideal as a slim insulation panel to replace standard plasterboard 👍
Amazing work. Need you guys here in doncaster. Got blown render outside which has now damaged my walls inside. Certainly the ones on side where renders blown.
@@ItsJustRyan89 well parts of my walls are damp and plaster ruined. I private rent. So told landlord to get all render off whenever on outside and replace my windows. Which he is doing. I will do inside. But no point me doint all nice word indoors til all render off outside and walls breathe and whatnot. Work in progress i guess but going in right direction finally. Ive contacted alot of companies and those eco grants. No luck. Just got solar panels and hybrid heatpumps instead of what i wanted lol.
Hi,would you be able to come to Birmingham for a free survey, please? I have exactly the same problem in my house so im interested how much would th cost be? Thank you
That's an hours drive each way, without traffic, during peak hours it could be an hour and a half each way. So let's say 3 hours driving there and back, plus an hour up to 2 hours for the survey. That's 5 hours in total and you expect it for free? 🤣
Is that inner insulation one of those foam cement boards thats used for tiling bathrooms etc, if so, can you skim directly on it or so you have to seal it 1st?
@@SDRobertsPlastering Well you’ve just persuaded me I need to do this -sadly not in your area. I would plan to plaster over the Jackoboard. Could you suggest a suitable SBR ( had to look that up and there are a fair few!)?
Good video, nicely presented. How did you deal with the gap between the underside of the floor boards and the ceiling below? Or is their still cold air blowing/getting under the floor?
@@SDRobertsPlastering Dam good job 👍👍. When you first showed the window and bay I couldn't help noticing the UPVC window was very mouldy, I think there is a problem also with the use of the room, drying wet clothes or something. too much heat and humidity and lack of ventilation. just a thought.
Alright mate. What boards have you used here? I only have 12mm to play with in a curved bay window but they don't do the jackoboard flexo in 12mm. Can the normal jackoboard be slightly curved around a curved bay window? Thanks
Thanks for this video. I have this problem in 4 bay windows in my flat. Does removing the lath minimise any structural stability or was this just a way to allow the thick original plaster to be applied? Could I use a mineral wool insulation like Knauf instead of the XPS boards and would that also be effective? Would using Jackoboard instead of plasterboard reduce breathability? What board did you use on the ceiling?
@@arlenejnelson Hi there, The laths are only there to carry the plaster and have no structural purpose this method was used before the introduction of plasterboard. Mineral wool is pretty good but not as effective as PIR and XPS insulation. In regards to breathability is your building made up of lime? In which case these materials shouldn't be used and a breathable system such as wood fibre board and lime finish is better. Thanks Stuart

Great job mate! Question, I'd like to insulate my external hallway wall and landing, could I do this using the 10mm tile backer board? Was planning on using 25mm pir with 9.5mm plasterboard but space is an issue unfortunately. Also would this give a better thermal performance than thermal wallpaper? Thanks
@@jordanf0506 You can yes it won't be as good as 25mm PIR but will give around 25 - 30% thermal uplift so still pretty good I wouldn't bother with foam backed wallpaper doesn't last long
