Simple explanation - There are 100 poems that the players have memorised. The 'reader' has the 1st verse of all the poems and the players have 25 cards each in front of them which has the 2nd verse of the poems. When the reader starts reading the 1st verse of the poem the players have to try to be the first one to touch the card with the 2nd verse of that poem.

The anime was not an exaggeration this is a genuine hard game that not anyone can become a professional with just keeping it as a hobby or with just a year worth of play ... You have to dedicate yourself into it like any other sport

Never watched a game and not been able to figure out whose turn it is... or if there are turns.
It's about 100 poems and you place 50 on your side they their side. The person reading out the poem is what they are listening too. You have to memorize 100 cards and their placements in a set time then it goes from their. Whoever figures out the card needs to take it as quickly as possible. It's a very mental strategy memorization game.
@@morriganrenfield8240 correction to this comment, there are 100 poems in total. The first like of the poem is being read out by the reader and the second line is on the cards in front of them. They have 25 cards on each side and they must memorize the positions of the cards in order to get the cards first. They can choose to place the cards on their side wherever they like. There end goal of the game is to clear all cards from their side.
As mentioned, there are 100 poems and only 50 in front of them, so there are "dead cards". These are the cards that are read out but the second line is not in one of the 50 in front of them. If a player touches a card when a dead card is being read, this is considered a "fault". When a player commits a fault, the opponent can send a card over to their side.
When a player gets a card (correctly) on their side, they take that card and put it in their stack. If they get a card on their opponent's side, they as that card to their stack and send a card over to the opponent's side.
This game really takes a lot of effort as the players have to memorize all the 100 poems before they can even start playing, however many players memorise the first few words as that's usually all you need to hear to loo for the second line. They also have to memorize the positions of the cards, which change throughout the game. I believe some also memorize the cards that have already been read so they can eliminate the similar sounding poems in order to be able to get cards faster later in the game.

In chihayafuru all the players have the same cards, so dead cards are read at the same time (like in a tournament). In real karuta are the cards random between matches with the same reader?
In the Meijin (Master) and Queen title match, the cards are random.
In other competitions, the cards are same typically.
