I will complement older women on their outfits because, especially if they are overweight, no-one noticed the effort. Being doing this since I was in my 20's. Now I am older and widowed, I appreciate the two or three compliments a year that I might get. I still complement old women even if it is just saying "That's your color. Oh and all children should get a smile.
My husband and I did an audit this year of how much we spent per year in all our categories- my clothes was about 1200 per year on average, which blew my mind. That is a good start to a vacation or a home improvement project. Or 1200 to get our mortgage paid off early! So I just decided to try to go a year without buying any clothing this year. I’ve made it to month 4 and so far so good! I’ve even had friends who didn’t know I was doing this give me a few pieces that they do not want any more that I loved and made me feel like I had some new variety.
Go to a local thrift shop. I do most of my shopping this way, and get really great clothes for a fraction of the price of new. Once in a while, I buy new, and always by new if its undergarments or shoes.
When i went to Guatamala a few years ago someone suggested wearing clothes while i was there that I didn't mind leaving with the host family to pass onto someone who could use it. Left several pants, tops, a couple of dresses, a pair of shoes and the blanket I used on my bed. Felt so good to come back home with a much lighter suitcase.
Hi Dawn, A while ago you gave a tip that I use every time I'm considering a purchase - "If it's not a "Yes"; it's a "No". Thank you for another great video filled with useful advice. Love from Australia.
Yes ! Also an effective tool for decluttering & deciding whether to keep something or not !! I just asked myself yesterday RE: a long - time, sentimental decor item (from a trip!) that does NOT need to be with me for life : I reminded myself : “if it’s not a heck yes , it’s a heck NO!”
I didn’t believe you at all at first until one morning I went into my closet felt so unhappy that I got back in bed. I remembered you saying don’t we all deserve to have a closet with only clothes that fit us and make us happy. I did it that day and have been waking up happier everyday. My closest had 70-80% of things I didn’t like or couldn’t wear! You are so ahead of your time and I’m so thankful for your work!!!❤
I call my capsule wardrobe my daily uniform 😮. Basic is jeans, leggings, t shirts, tank top and cardigan sweater. I dress in layers year around. There are items I never wear, shorts, capris or dresses. My go to dress up is black jeans, nice blouse. I started doing this wardrobe for about 5 years, took awhile to get it downsized and my rule is nothing is stored, accessibility is key to having what I want or need to wear at any time. I wear Birkenstocks, tennis shoes for walking and flip flops in house. I am now decluttering handbags, totes and purses down to a small selection. Jewelry is in one container (divided) necklaces hang on small rack! This took time but watching your channel encourages me to keep downsizing more and that is OK 👌🏻 ❤
You must live in the North. My idea of layering is a bikini under short shorts and a tank top, LOL. 😂 In N FL it’s miserably hot and humid at least 6 months of the year so slacks are out for me. Calf length dresses, no stockings, when I go out, so I don’t pass out. Truly! A couple months a year I can wear long sleeves, slacks and sweaters. It was cold enough to wear my lightweight wool coat about five times this year. If I want to dress in winter clothes, I book a flight to New York to see my son. I would love a cooler climate and I’m trying to work towards that.

Your advice about smiling is SPOT ON. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve greeted someone with a smile and they look surprised and then smile back!😊
I love the “keep only clothes that fit today’s body.” Keeping the ones that don’t fit only creates stress and shame. Also only buy if it fits perfect. Feels good to the skin and is very comfortable.
In my season of life (retired, Granny to 2), my wardrobe is all about comfort! I've always been a Plain Jane and stick to black, gray, red & white...along with jeans in cooler months (I live in central Ohio) & shorts/capris in summer. Yes, I have a few dresses...and I love wearing dresses & do a lot in the summer...but my staple wardrobe is jeans and a nice t-shirt-style top most days. We moved 3 years ago & I got rid of at least 3/4 of my wardrobe, along with probably 2/3 of the 'stuff' in my house. I've missed NONE of it! So...I wear what I like & am comfortable in & it's always appropriate. I look nice whether in jeans & a nice top or a dress. I really don't care what others think!
I know you were just talking about clothes, but growing up I never heard adults admit to making mistakes. It is so refreshing and helpful to me to hear a women be okay with herself making mistakes, so thank you.
@@TheMinimalMom YES to loving your WAY of communicating information, Dawn! It's not an exaggeration to say you've literally helped me heal childhood wounds about cleaning and clutter with your kind, accepting, *inspiring* style. Since watching your channel I've even sometimes experienced JOY while cleaning my house. 😄 Who would have thought! I'm so grateful you found this forum to share your GIFTS with the world, and that I found you! *THANK YOU!!!* ❤
I buy probably 98% of my clothes second hand. Just this past weekend I got a pair of Spanx moto leggings (that sell right now for $98) for a buck and a pair of Levi shorts that were new with a $59.50 price tag for a buck. :)
@@erikaestok6835 , the key is going a lot. I typically decide what I am going to go through that day and that's all I look at. For example I might go in and go through all the jeans and the next time it might be the dresses. It's too overwhelming to try to tackle more than one section.
I've never forgotten the lesson about smiling. My mom always made a point of trying to make grumpy cashiers smile back at her using her own smile & loving attitude and a little joke sometimes!
Something I try to do most days-when I see a cute outfit, or a cute top, I compliment the person on what they are wearing. We all love to hear compliments & the recipients are generally so happy & grateful to hear a sincere compliment.
I saw a video on the Amish and the wardrobe was a set of about four hooks on the wall, i was so attracted to this idea I adopted it and love the natural restriction it gives. I do have 8 hooks as the women wear dresses and I am generally a trouser and top person. For Dana followers this is a great container!
Ive found that in certain areas of this country - that a smile or a simple hello will only garner a nasty comment or dirty look (especially on the west coast!) I'm glad to live in a part of the country that a smile is reciprocated & just natural. I always felt depressed and lonely out in the west, but glad to live further east!
Sometimes trends come in and I hate them (looking at you, skinny jeans), but sometimes they come in and it feels so much like my style. I’m loving the wide leg jeans and trousers with belts and tucked in tops, so I’m trying to replenish my very very sparse closet with these items. I hope they’re timeless enough to last for a long while. I also realized I really don’t like patterned tops and like neutrals best, so I’m focusing on buying staples that I can wear on repeat and feel good on my body.
Colors go in and out of style as well, and I will ignore entire seasons if they don't have becoming colors for me, personally! And I might buy a little more when those special shades come back in style 😊! Honestly, I buy so very little in the way of clothing. And I try to take care of it the best I can to avoid having to replace it!
I’m a tee shirt and jeans kind of style myself. I just cleaned some tee shirts out of my closet and am going to attempt to make some tee shirt yarn since I crochet!
Because of watching you, I now realize that it's ok to live simply. Wear what makes me feel comfortable. Black T-shirts are my go to. Leggings/sweats and jeans.
Hearing you talk about 'your now body' a couple of years ago really helped me. As someone who changes size relatively frequently, I do have a drawer of my favourite pieces which don't currently fit but I'd like when I'm next at that size (both bigger or smaller!) but I use the container method to keep it at a manageable level. Otherwise most of my items are favourites BECAUSE they fit me at more sizes. I recommend youtube Leena Normz for how to identify what will work at multiple sizes - she talks about things like having more room at the armpit which is a game changer!
@lagribbs2693 @moongirl8807 thank you both for the channel recommendation ! I'd never heard of Leena Norms before so I went & checked out the content-dig the vibe and the practicality :) as a person who has difficulty finding clothing that fits my entire body (bc my clothes often fit one part of me but not another, so the same garment is both too tight & too loose...super frustrating).
I have been binge-watching you and Tom on his channel, Rusty Judgment. Talk about what smiling can do to improve your day. My face hurts from watching the two of you smile and laugh. If any of you haven't seen Tom's channel, it is delightful. I bet if we pushed him to a hundred thousand followers, he would make more videos of his antics. Priceless
I am hypersensitive to pressure, types of fabric, etc. I keep things simple with wide legged pants a basic top, and a duster. Sometimes the top is long sleeved, sometimes it's short sleeved, depending on the weather. Having these layers helps to keep me comfortable in our ever changing weather. One thing that I practice is a LOT of grace, because sometimes I will think that a color will work well for me, and it just doesn't and then it becomes a distraction. So I give myself permission to let the item go and like you I try to donate where I can.
What helped me the most with my closet was finding out about ‘dressing your truth’ - it completely removed the guilt of why something fits me and something doesnt! It became so easy to get rid of all the clothes that don’t fit and it made me (almost) immune to trends! It’s a system that helps you understand your natural energy and how clothing corresponds to that 🥰
I'm glad the system worked for you, I was personally typed by Ann Tuttle as a 4/1. probably the biggest waste of money because I purchased too many things in black and pure saturated color. Not a spendthrift but still. On the plus side, it got me examining details a lot more. The clarity of the color palette of those two types is just too harsh on me though. I think I got bossier as well, "Giving myself permission to be direct like a type four." 😂 it's when I wear my summer colors, like I was originally typed a long time ago, that people tell me that I look radiant and glowing. I just happen to be a high contrast summer that often gets confused with a winter. Similar to a four, I do better in solids, but I can absolutely do without wearing a bold print or harsh stripes like a four. And I have a baby face still, and so I do like to incorporate Some aspects of type one, that gives a little lift without feeling too crisp. Usually some kind of movement detail at the helm of a tunic top, or wearing a necklace with tiny pieces of Seaglass in different shades of aqua and sea green. it gives a hint of warmth and clarity without going all the way there. I still have black in my wardrobe, it's useful enough for winter and easily accessible. But I'm definitely Planning to phase it out almost entirely (because my fuzzy black boots are going to probably last a really long time, and they were born to go with black leggings). I just wear a deep muted plum or navy top with it.
@@jessicaray1418 - it's interesting because they type off of the face and my personality, and they gave me two clear seasons (One cool and one warm) and those are just too startling on my coloring. You were typed with two warm seasons, and it sounds like you're finding the more muted Warm colors to be best on you, right? Very interesting. did you find that any other details made sense to you? Type one is very perky, animated, small print, dainty, lots of circles. Type three is heavier, more substantial, triangles, heavy textures. Other than the warmth the only thing they seem to have in common is that they are both good with busier print.
I've had good success getting rid of clothes that are uncomfortable, even if they fit and even if I like them, if they're itchy or the waist is weird or whatever then they have to go. But recently I have expanded that: I have some clothes that are comfortable most of the time, but every once in a while I put it on and I just can't stand it. I don't know the reason but this is a real thing for me. So I decided that I would also get rid of all the pieces of clothing that are uncomfortable sometimes (as opposed to the ones that are never comfortable lol).
I love your successes! And I suppose you could save time and money in the future if you spent a little time thinking about what it was you couldn't stand about the outfits you got rid of. Make a note of it and see if those trends continue. I have spent a fair amount of time on "systems" that help you decide what colors to wear, what lines look best on my body type, what my "energy" style is. I don't actually recommend doing that because it can be a time suck, but it was informative. You are probably a faster learner than I was. but one thing really helped me a lot. When I was at the mall I took a couple of afternoons to just hold clothing up to myself and ask myself my own opinion about all the little details. Obviously, that I like how this color looked on me. One of my favorite questions as someone from a muted color palette was "do I notice the clothing first or I do I notice ME first when I look at myself with this in front of me?" If the garment was hogging all the attention, instead of bringing out my natural beauty, it was a thumbs down. It's helpful if you can figure out a good question to ask yourself like that, a question that is suitable for you and what you like and what feels right on you. On each trip I looked at slightly different things, like the level of light/dark contrast, did I like stripes that are bold or delicate or not at all, did I like polkadots, what size, did I like them in regimented rose or blobs or in tiny speckles like little stars sprinkled across the field? I asked myself if I liked the different florals, plans, and again I focused on the scale and the contrast and the color and the amount of negative space. When I held up eveningwear I asked myself if I liked the intense sparkle of sequins and Lamé or whether beaded things were nicer. Bouffant or sleek? Strapless or not? And I just talked into my phone all of my observations as quietly as possible so as not to look insane in a public place.😂 I continued that a little bit when I was going through the things in my wardrobe. After a long way off I did it again and compared the two sets of notes. They were pretty much the same and now it really helps me to walk right past things in stores and not even bother with them. I know what I don't like. I can focus on what I do like.
I have been working on reducing my wardrobe since I started watching your videos and am happy to say that EVERYTHING in my closet fits! I've come to realize that I need variety in my tops, so for me to be happy I can't have a truly minimalist wardrobe. When I really pared down I got tired of everything I owned really quickly. I have more tops now and am happier having choices but I always feel this tension between having too much and being tired of my clothes.
May l suggest you wear medium to light colors? They look beautiful on you!! Try warm tone light pastels. The light blue is fabulous too. Then choose shallow V necks, or boat necks. Stay away from crew necks and horizontal stripes. (Black seems to look too harsh for your caramel blonde coloring.) But your smile is terrific and supersedes everything you wear! 😍
Wear what you makes happy! Black is practical fun elegant simple timeless - ask a New Yorker. (Carry a fluorescent belt in for night time safety if necessary 😉) 🔦
You made so make so many good points! I recently had some health changes that have heavily impacted what I can wear on a daily basis. Keeping what fits today and letting others wear different clothes without needing to copy them has been huge for me during this season. Thank you for your videos!
Clothing continues to be my nemesis! These videos help, but man I have so far to go. The problem is mostly that I am unsatisfied with my body, so nothing looks great. I have discovered that spending time on my hair and makeup so that looks nice, gives way more confidence than clothing. It goes along with the smile. It is what people really look at and the clothing is secondary. I continue to be a work in progress.
learn to love your body how it is right now, and maybe learn a little bit about your lines. Whether you use the fruit method or the Kibbe method, just pay attention to whether you look better in things with strong shoulder lines or not, things with belted waist or not, if you look better in one color top to bottom or broken up
Shepherd's Fashions has a daily show demonstrating how to dress no matter your size or your style personality. They give you ideas of how to style what is already in your wardrobe. Such fun!
@@HoneyBee-pc3xi - it's very fun to do online quizzes, but the common thread whether I'm looking at fashion or decor quizzes, is that they don't give enough options. Once you've been around the block a little bit, you can see that they are trying to herd you into a set number of choices. But there are examples of types that I actually like or sometimes images of things I don't like. It's only because I've studied so many different types that I catch that. So it's really easy to go wrong if you don't know the intention behind the quizzes. But they're still fun!
I love ThredUP! You can search the exact color, fabric content, size, details, etc. I recently got rid of almost all of my wardrobe and have opted to replace it with used clothing. I’m loving this content which encourages me to have much less clothing.
Amen to everything you said in this video. This mind set has made my life so much easier. During the pandemic i got hooked on the thought of minimalism. I did so much purging, since i was stuck at home. We packed up an suv full of bags and boxes twice, took them to a women's shelter downtown. And i haven't looked back.
Smile, yes, and it makes you feel better too! I have a brand I love called Pact. They are expensive imo, so I try to wait for sales, but they are sustainably sourced and use mostly organic cotton. The clothes feel so good on my skin and they hold up well to repeated washings. For socks I like Darn Tough. They have a lifetime warranty so if your socks wear out you send them back and they send you a new pair. I only wear socks in winter but since you are in a cold state I thought I’d tell you about them. The merino wool fabric is great.
For the past few years I've been pretty set on buying only good quality forever pieces, but with so much being online only and with the extra cost of such high quality, I did find that it was pretty tedious and challenging, especially for casual wear. I forget why I went ahead and walked into an Old Navy one day last summer, but I found that they have a line of shirts that are 100% and come in a variety of colors. They still aren't my perfectly ideal quality, but for the price it was pretty hard to argue with when at the time I so desperately needed just some simple everyday shirts! I did end up keeping one that wasn't as good a color for me as I thought, but two of the shirts I bought have become my absolute favorites! I'm learning more and more about myself (fabrics I prefer, colors I avoid, and cuts that suit me best) and so it's actually turned out to be a great place to test things out first before selecting those pricier pieces :)
Lol! I just sat down to watch this - with my a coffee, to have a break from cleaning out my closet and putting TWELVE cardigans in my car for Thrift Store Donation tomorrow! hahaha!...
I totally agree that there are so many better things to spend money on than trendy or designer clothes. I am spend money making memories with my family and helping others. 😊
Your question at the beginning about what is a capsule wardrobe got me thinking. I had never actually asked that question before. 😄 So I looked up the word "capsule" in Webster's 1828 Dictionary. This is his first definition for "capsule": "The seed vessel of a plant; a dry membranaceous hollow pericarp, opening differently in different plants..." So I guess a "capsule wardrobe" would be the seed form of a wardrobe: the simple essentials that contain and nurture us as we grow. 😊 I also like what he said about it "opening differently in different plants". In the same way, we are each uniquely designed by God and so our capsule wardrobes should be uniquely suited to each of us differently--tp support our own individual lives as we grow...🌱 So thank you, Dawn, for your simple, fun question that sparked my very nerdy brain! I have a much better understanding of "capsule wardrobes" now! 😂🙌❤
You do have a capsul wardrobe! Having one can mean that you don’t have to put a lot of energy into your cloths! All of your tops match all of your jeans so that is a capsul!! I have a very nice capsul wardrobe in our apartment in town. I put a lot of energy and time on it in late fall, winter and early spring. The rest of the time I have a leftover wardrobe in our house, that is tiny and I still can’t manage it. I garden most of the time or are out walking the dog. So I don’t put any time or erfors in to it. I just want cloths that can take a beating and funktion when I garden. What I want to say it doesn’t have to be the season of life. It can be different at different seasons within one year! ❤️
You are so right. Stressing about what to wear is a pain. I don’t need to have a lot of clothes. I do need to have everything fit and in good shape so I don’t have to waste time.
Thanks Dawn! I’m always amazed that you are able to keep your wardrobe so small living in a northern State. I live in Maine and have 33 sweaters alone! Haha… and wear them! And the coats! We need so many for so many different types of cold, snow, rain, sleet, fog, half sun mostly fog then cold again days! And don’t forget the mud!! I need ALL the layers and all the options. It’s so hard to keep it minimal.
I absolutely agree with what you said about being happy for other people who choose to dress fancy and fashionable all the time...I too am so thankful to have clothes that fit and that I look nice in...without having to go all out w a large wardrobe. My life is so much more simpler...especially when I have to help 7 kids get ready for school and church each week!:)
I love using Poshmark and ThredUp for used clothes from the brands you love. I've been able to find Everlane jeans for $25 when they retail for about $110.
I recently lost 25 pounds, so I had to update my entire wardrobe. I found a lot of good deals on name brands (I like name brands for quality not status) at Costco.
Dawn, you and your sister are like the “ dynamic duo”. You both always give me new insight and motivation in many areas of my life. Thank you. From a grandma of 26 grandchildren. God bless
I love when you give us a fashion show Dawn. I agree with a simple uniform and I’ve realized my own classic personal style and I love it. Tips and jeans, in colors that coordinate and look good on me. Trend resistant. Thanks Dawn ! Also, you look beautiful in blues, pinks, whites, creams, and tans.
I've found that avoiding mistakes is easier with time. It's at least four years since I bought anything I didn't love and wear constantly. I've learned the hard way that however good something looks, if it doesn't feel right I won't wear it, so I never shop with anyone else as it's too easy to get pushed into buying something that looks great but that you don't feel comfortable in. I've also learned to ask if I'm buying this for my real self or my fantasy self! Mostly, I live in jeans, identical t-shirts in different colours and chunky jumpers. I have one skirt and top set and one dress for summer and the same for winter, for the rare occasions when I need to be a bit dressier. And I know that if it isn't made from cotton, linen, bamboo or wool, I won't wear it so there's no point buying it!
At home it's all T shirts & capris or sweatpants. In public it's black pants & nice, button down work shirts. I don't wear jewelry at all anymore since it gets tangled in my hair, gets dirty (a lot of trips to the garden & feed store) or causes a breakout (nickel earrings). I have 2 pairs of dress shows, some cheap, foam flip flops for the house & a pair for outdoors & a couple pairs of running/hiking shoes. What stores need more of is non-plastic, airy, summer shirts that don't look like frumpy, granny clothes.
🎯🎯🎯 I find jewelry a bit fussy for the most part and I've broken things when my Crossbody bag damaged necklaces. I will say that there are certain outfits where I like a nice elongating simple necklace but that's about it. 🎯🎯🎯 I completely agree with you on the topic of attractive tops to wear in the summertime. All of my favorites are getting so worn out, for winter or for summer! But they don't look hard to make and I bought a couple of patterns and some light lovely fabric to make my own. It's hard enough finding fabric that isn't outright ugly on me. Finding a nice fabric in a shirt that I think is attractive like constructed is a whole other layer of difficulty.
My style is casual so I decided my basic wardrobe would be casual basics, jeans, tees, legging etc. I dress them up or down with accessories and if I need something specific for an occasion I buy for it. I do also make sure I have a good pair of black dress pants, they work for all occasions!
My fav fashion channels are MM Personal Styling and Dressed for My Day. They both emphasize clothing that works for YOUR body and life. MM is more focused on flattering your body. Dressed… is more focused on making trends work for you, it’s a 50+ geared channel, but I’m 39 and I love it!
I tend to wear jeans and a t shirt everyday. I will add a sweatshirt if its chilly, or wear a dress if its hot.I live in the UK, so dressing in layers is key for me. Dressing up is either a dress or smarter jeans and fancier t shirt. I lead a casual life, and don’t feel the need to impress or follow trends. I tend to buy thrift clothing, but stopped buying clothes the end of last year, as I have more than I need. I will be decluttering soon, as Im rearranging my wardrobe and drawers in time for summer. Im hoping with less choice it will give me more time and freedom.
My go-to t-shirts are Bella and Canvas. I get them from Michael's (yes, the craft store). I like how they are longer than most t-shirts. I now have the same exact shirt in 5 or 6 colors!
I try to follow the "fantasy" self you have talked about before. That really stuck with me. My fantasy self wears MUCH less comfortable shoes than my actual self!
Love the video! Was funny when you said your sister puts in effort because she likes to look nice and you don’t do it much, you look really pretty in everything you wear ❤
Something it’s really helped me gain confidence and comfort in my shopping and wardrobe is something I actually gleed from a comment on one of your clothing videos about three years ago, where someone recommended looking at “dress your truth“. That somehow pinged for me and I looked it up and it really gelled. It has helped me become much more aware of my own natural energy, a process of discovery and learning to love me for who I am and wearing things that express that energy quality in harmony. And a really cool side effect: then a “capsule wardrobe“ where things are interchangeable with ease comes pretty much as a matter of course! 😊
I’ve came to terms that I enjoy wearing T shirts but I also love to cook so that means stains. I have my at home T shirts that I switch to when I come home and my “fancy T-shirts” that I use when I head out. This has worked by far for me. I even allow myself to invest in quality Ts for my fancy ones. Once the fancy Ts become worn or accidentally stained they get demoted and my home shirts I guess get upgraded lol
Dear Dawn, thank you so much for the inspiration. I always love your clothing videos, because they put us back into perspective from everything the fashion industry tells us (I don’t use Instagram or Pinterest anymore, but still adverts are everywhere) I have limited my wardrobe to a few styles and colours. If I find a piece I really enjoy, I try to get it in different colours, so I know it fits well. For all the Europeans, my favourite brand is “Twothirds”, they produce ethically in Portugal or Spain and their style is timeless yet fashionable. Almost all of my wardrobe is from them. Yes, they are a bit costly, but usually I allow myself ONE new item per season and wear the clothes until they fall apart (which they rarely do, even after years of intense wearing)
A spin on having a solid resale shop to donate to. Buying at consignment shops has helped me find better quality clothing than I could afford or find new. I feel more empowered to experiment at that price point, see what works enough to hold on to and what I can let go (even if it fits & looks nice on me but I don’t end up feeling comfortable in all day long.) Routing nice clothing to my community college’s career center, the women’s center, or our local domestic violence shelter makes me feel good about my m̶i̶s̶t̶a̶k̶e̶s̶ learning experiences rather than feeling shame for wastefulness. It’s been a built-in grace grantor. ❤ Also, this is how I learned that Börn shows ALWAYS fit me amazing in the more and fit the duration. I also learned Clark’s shoes don’t always, but quite frequently, fit me similarly.
Thank you for this video, clothing is one of my biggest struggles. I’ve gotten rid of lots but still have so much more I need to let go! Think these 10 non-clothing items to add might help give me the final encouragement I needed! Thank you!!
I had a baby six weeks ago. My wardrobe consists of several colors of the same smocked dress I bought off Amazon, coordinating cardigans for cooler spring days, black pants, some casual nursing shirts, and nicer dresses for church from Ivy City Co. It is SO much easier to get dressed now than it was when I was nursing my first baby. As a huge added bonus, the smocked dresses are also maternity friendly!
That is so true about finding a good spot to donate clothing, that it makes it easier to part with. My go-to is a Hospice Shop where all the proceeds go to end of life care. The store is beautiful - it's like going to a fancy shop!
The power of confidence (and a SMILE 😀) became clear to me after I gained a *MASSIVE* amount of weight during a perfect storm/vicious cycle of ill health > not working > emotional eating. Even though on the inside I felt terribly self-conscious, I continued to dress in flattering clothes and carry myself with confidence and genuine warmth for others. To my shock, in contrast to the invisibility I often experienced when I was more conventionally "attractive" as a thinner, younger person in my twenties (but with lower self-esteem and no particular care expressed in my clothing) I continued to be treated the same in retail and other situations at a much (MUCH!) larger size, and even got checked out by attractive men of all ages sometimes! 😍 Who knew! I'm a treat-EVERYONE-well kind of person so part of me is kind of disgusted noticing that things as minor as wearing eyeliner or a pretty skirt can make such a difference in how people behave towards me. However, it IS nice to see how being the one to smile first and show an interest in others (from retail clerks to coworkers to...) can brighten people's day and create connections. I'll take that over a big wardrobe any day! 😻
I have found the same thing to be true ❤! leaving behind foolish insecurities in favor of simply loving everybody around me is SO much better 😊. I imagine some people may not treat me as well as they would if I were better looking, better dressed etc., but I no longer worry about that and after choosing something simple, comfy and unfussy to wear, in the becoming colors in my closet, I live to lavish care on others when I am out and about. And I have been definitely shocked when I have received compliments from men at MY much larger size! 🙃 It certainly doesn't happen often, but it sure tickles me when it does! 😂. I am more likely to get those compliments from the women I know, I think in reciprocation, because when I noticed that they are wearing a color or an outfit or a detail that looks lovely on them, I love to let them know! Part of it is that I just have such an appreciation for color and harmony. And the other part… I don't know what kind of day they are having, and if I can point out something positive I'm gonna take the time and the trouble to do so.
I'm glad that you said about 20% of the time you don't make right clothing choices at the purchase. Because I figured at some point a person would get perfect with that! But if you're not perfect with that, then I can give myself a break too!
Fabbbulous , Dawn ! Gratitude & a smile, & a good night’s sleep … for the WIN ! Yaaaas … most of the time I prioritize comfort & ease. I walk & bus everywhere so comfortable shoes - & often layers - are a must !! That includes winter boots that may be far less of a fashion statement, but keep my feet warm & dry in Bflo winters, & have superior tread ! Hey ! That gives me confidence & mobility ! My daughter bought me a pair from a Canadian company 10 yrs ago & they STILL work ! Pretty bulky & all, but I also did buy a less, um, substantial pair last year for winter, that I switch out with on milder winter days. Got from A’zon at an end of season sale. My winter coat for blizzardy days of being out in the elements with groceries etc, is also like a tundra survival Parka lol ! Probably not super cute, but keeps me warm & dry. Just got a cute outfit for my concert & theater outings : from Nordstrom during their Spring sale. Investment pieces that I feel comfortable in, that will last !! I feel grateful to have gotten them. And yepp … had to exchange a pair of pants but their return system is easy. Love your outfits, Dawn ! You look beautiful & ready for a wonderful day as always!! xo Liz PS just did yet another clothes declutter / donation, & put a couple in “time will tell”. Always feels great to do! And did some radical de cluttering of stubborn ( & never used!) just-in-case items, a major fantasy / identity piece ( all of those I sold), donated books & decor , AND donated 2 pieces of furniture that went immediately to happy recipients. AH ! My bedroom is airier , roomier & lighter ! Have some other items by the door ready to leave now, too. I’ve always decluttered outgrown toys, clothes, papers & much more over the years !! But you have definitely helped me bring it to a whole other level, Dawn, & I am so grateful !!
Oh my goodness! I really like your clothing videos! It is so validating when I see that there are some items that didn't work. I let go of a shirt that would have worked for work, but wasn't me, I felt guilty letting it go, because "it's still in good shape." I was raised in the 1970's and we patched jeans to keep wearing--which can be cute, but nothing went to waste. Girl, I got a purse like that too! I can fit a water bottle in there, it's great! Have a great day Dawn!
Love the concept of small wardrobe. Bought cashmere sweater during black Friday for 40.00. same with nice flannel pajamas. Great way to afford good quality. Another win is to find jeans I love, then buy more when on sale. Now I'm finding I don't want to wear other jeans that are less comfy and don't fit as well. Once you know what you like, buy extra. All my clothes are in a 36 in wide closet. All fit and are flattering. There's a few items I still need, like a blazer or two and a fisherman sweater. But now I know what works for me. TFS
I think that finding brands that usually fit your body well and trying to stick with them when looking for clothes helps, too. Then you can even look for used items from that brand to save money. I would like more sustainable items, too, like Green 3 Apparel, but I tend to lean towards Life is Good, LL Bean and Gloria Vanderbilt pants. Now that I’m older and we have more money, I’m not limited to Walmart and can do some nicer and more expensive (to me) brands.
Love this video! So often I see videos (or articles) on the top ten items every woman needs. But our bodies and climates and lifestyles are so different, there’s no list that would fit every woman out there. This is a refreshing way to look at our closets without being prescriptive. Thanks Dawn ❤
Yes to a smile and confidence. I also think a good haircut makes a huge difference. The minimalist bloggers who wear a lot of black and look great are generally brunet- they have dark hair and brows. Or they are Dressing your Truth type 4 . It’s not for everyone. Dawn, you look so lovely in blue and blue is not hard to find. Or pink, and softer neutrals. I use navy blue and blue denim a lot. Keep up the good work, Dawn and all your followers!
As usual, love what you're saying! I'm 59, still learning my "personal style". I have to forgive myself for purchase mistakes a lot! Side note, that blue is great for you; really brings out the color of your eyes!
Thanks for this video! I've paired down my wardrobe significantly in the past few years. I retired and now work about half time - so I donated half my work wardrobe - to a seminary thrift shop where students and their families can shop for free. So there was a chunk out of my closet. Then I applied the question of, have I worn this recently and if not, why not? If the reason was I really like/enjoy it, but honestly there's so many other options - it either went in the donation box or.... that time will tell box (dated) or I actually keep a small box of extras that I do love, but prefer the space in my closet. (That box was great when my favorite chambray shirt was literally fraying out from age and wear - I had a back up. Dawn. You wear black tops. I wear chambray shirts. 🙃) Anyway... I've heard that 33 number of items several times now, but never counted. Hesitated to count, because there's really not much in my closet. What more could I possibly get rid of!? So today I counted. With great relief, I found out I have 29 pieces!! Thank you Dawn, you've helped me in my journey 🙂 (I should probably pair down this comment, but I'm headed to work instead. Here's to a great day!)
I love good quality clothes and shoes. I buy most of my clothes 2nd hand or Nordstrom Rack, eBay, Mercari or Poshmark. However I also love Old Navy's linen clothes (especially their shorts) and their tee shirt dresses. If you live in a hot climate these pieces need to be in your capsule wardrobe! When my tshirt dresses wear out, I cut them up to make rags! They are so easy to dress up or down. I just recently got rid of my black linen Old Navy shorts. I wore them for years! I loved this video and agree with everything you said.
Something that helped me pare down my wardrobe was learning my Kibbe body type. It helped me understand what cuts and styles are best suited for me and why certain clothes never seemed to work on me.
I wore a ton of black before. I don’t wear it as much now. I washes me out. As I get older. As much as it does most people. I also don’t wear exactly the same color solids on top as on bottom. No human crayons. My idea of a capsule wardrobe is your favorite pair of favorite pair of quality jeans, white jeans, khakis, black top, white top, one blazer, black slacks. Then you rotate your trendier stuff around it. I do pay more for what I love. I use the price per wear calculator. I I will wear it at least once a week. I divide the total price by 52. or by two years. That is the cost of wearing it each week. I work in a boutique so I have certain things I wear each week that are more high end. The rest is just easy stuff to put together. You are right good shoes is a must. Everyone’s style is different. I don’t buy a ton of clothes at work because I say I get to visit those clothes and appreciate them on my customers when they try them on. They do not have to come home with me! 😂. I can visit the clothes at the store.
I decluttered my clothes several years ago. That was great until I became handicapped and have to wait for other people to come do my laundry. So now I need to buy some new clothes to have enough to last between washings. Wish I had the other clothes back now .

This blue top makes your eyes absolutely pop!!! Stunning!! 😘
❤
That is the first thing I also noticed. So beautiful
I just came to say the same thing! Great color on her!
Thank you!!!!
I wish people would stop using that term. I have watched my fair share of horror movies, and the mental image of eyes popping is gross.
Shop 2nd hand!! I love clothes but I can get an amazing high quality top at Goodwill that someone paid $80 for and I pay $6 or less.
I did this last year I did end up spending $15ish on a thrift purchase but overall it was a great experience
Go to a local thrift shop. I do most of my shopping this way, and get really great clothes for a fraction of the price of new. Once in a while, I buy new, and always by new if its undergarments or shoes.
I spend about the same! It’s criminal :(
When i went to Guatamala a few years ago someone suggested wearing clothes while i was there that I didn't mind leaving with the host family to pass onto someone who could use it.
A HELL yes!
Fellow 🇦🇺
Well - from another Aussie lady - agree! If it’s not a HELL yes 🙌 it’s a HELL no. This has helped so much with the “maybe” items.
It’s funny bc many of my maybes have become staples/go to… and I am pretty good about choosing clothes so I’m not “wasting” money.
Me too
This took time but watching your channel encourages me to keep downsizing more and that is OK 👌🏻
❤
Yeah you only need a few bottoms and switch shirts
I switch handbags alot cause I like so many different ones on cheaper side, 75 and under then I donate them after I'm done.
@@SoundofSilence492I'm working my way down there and you are wanting more cold 😂😂😂
@@angelgirldebbiejoI always like bags. I tell my friends at my size they always fit😊! Going to make a handbag this summer...wish me luck.

Yes, after living in Venezuela for 36 years, we don’t need to upgrade anything! Makes you grateful for what you have!!
😊
I know you were just talking about clothes, but growing up I never heard adults admit to making mistakes. It is so refreshing and helpful to me to hear a women be okay with herself making mistakes, so thank you.
I just love your optimism, encouragement and grace that pours over all the wisdom. God bless you Dawn!❤
This means more than you know -- thank you!!!!
Love that for you!
I get so many compliments on top I got for four dollars at vintage shop!
@@bitrudder3792 , I love vintage clothing. 😍
That’s amazing! I don’t have any luck at thrift stores here. I have to be really particular about what I buy new in this case.
The blue shirt looks so good on you, it brings out your blue eyes, pretty!
Thank you!!!!
I think your bag's style and color are timeless.
Because of watching you, I now realize that it's ok to live simply. Wear what makes me feel comfortable. Black T-shirts are my go to. Leggings/sweats and jeans.
Agree! Fewer options, more simplicity, more peace! ❤👏🏼 That is the goal.
Oh Leena's videos are phenomenal, her insights on clothing have literally changed my life.
Priceless
Tom hasn’t put out any new videos on Rusty judgement for quite a while.😢
He should...right????
What??! I never even knew Tom had his *own* channel!
Yes his channel is called
Rusty Judgement
I know! Toooooommm!!! Please come back!
Smile and the whole world smiles with you ❤
What helped me the most with my closet was finding out about ‘dressing your truth’ - it completely removed the guilt of why something fits me and something doesnt! It became so easy to get rid of all the clothes that don’t fit and it made me (almost) immune to trends! It’s a system that helps you understand your natural energy and how clothing corresponds to that 🥰
Agreed! I’m a Type 1!
I think I got bossier as well, "Giving myself permission to be direct like a type four." 😂
it's when I wear my summer colors, like I was originally typed a long time ago, that people tell me that I look radiant and glowing.
I was typed a one also. I think I'm a 1/3 but I still think three colors look good on me the lighter ones I often think I'm 3/1
I decided if i cant wear it and be comfortable when im bloated right before my period than i refuse to keep it, lol it has to feel good any time.
And I just talked into my phone all of my observations as quietly as possible so as not to look insane in a public place.😂
I continued that a little bit when I was going through the things in my wardrobe.
After a long way off I did it again and compared the two sets of notes.
They were pretty much the same and now it really helps me to walk right past things in stores and not even bother with them. I know what I don't like. I can focus on what I do like.
That brown sweater was the best. Don't let that one go. Also, a smile is an instant face lift!
Yes! Still one of my favorites!
💯
Wear what you makes happy! Black is practical fun elegant simple timeless - ask a New Yorker. (Carry a fluorescent belt in for night time safety if necessary 😉) 🔦
You made so make so many good points! I recently had some health changes that have heavily impacted what I can wear on a daily basis. Keeping what fits today and letting others wear different clothes without needing to copy them has been huge for me during this season. Thank you for your videos!
You’re such a joy. I smile every time I watch you.
I just did this too!
I sold or donated 99% of my office clothes on Thredup and most of my med range handbags.
I have been shopping pretty exclusively at Everlane for ten years. They’re not cheap but they source ethically and the things do last a while.
Wonderful idea!
Lol! I just sat down to watch this - with my a coffee, to have a break from cleaning out my closet and putting TWELVE cardigans in my car for Thrift Store Donation tomorrow! hahaha!...
Blue is definitely your colour❤ & you are such a charming person it really doesn’t matter what you wear.
This is his first definition for "capsule":
"The seed vessel of a plant; a dry membranaceous hollow pericarp, opening differently in different plants..."
So I guess a "capsule wardrobe" would be the seed form of a wardrobe: the simple essentials that contain and nurture us as we grow. 😊 I also like what he said about it "opening differently in different plants". In the same way, we are each uniquely designed by God and so our capsule wardrobes should be uniquely suited to each of us differently--tp support our own individual lives as we grow...🌱
So thank you, Dawn, for your simple, fun question that sparked my very nerdy brain! I have a much better understanding of "capsule wardrobes" now! 😂🙌❤
Love this! Thanks!
Beautiful
I love when you do wardbrobe videos! Please show us your spring wardrobe ❤
Will do!!!
Love love love your first tip. Smile!!! So simple and so true!
God bless
I love when you give
us a fashion show Dawn.
I always love your videos on clothing!
Are those 100% cotton by any chance???? Thx!
Hanes online has good cotton t's
Thanks for this tip! Headed to Michaels soon because I have trouble finding tops long enough!
I have been wearing my good quality and functional hiking pants daily. They are comfortable and giving.
Nice to see you in color, I hate all the black, color suits you
I'm getting my closet down and down. It feels so good! Thanks for the inspiration.
Dear Dawn,
thank you so much for the inspiration. I always love your clothing videos, because they put us back into perspective from everything the fashion industry tells us (I don’t use Instagram or Pinterest anymore, but still adverts are everywhere)
I have limited my wardrobe to a few styles and colours.
Also, this is how I learned that Börn shows ALWAYS fit me amazing in the more and fit the duration.
Love this combo! Four weeks postpartum here 🙋♀️ Would you be willing to share the link to your Amazon dress?!
@@bitrudder3792 Love it! : - )
You look beautiful & ready for a wonderful day as always!! xo Liz
PS just did yet another clothes declutter / donation, & put a couple in “time will tell”. Always feels great to do! And did some radical de cluttering of stubborn ( & never used!) just-in-case items, a major fantasy / identity piece
( all of those I sold), donated books & decor , AND donated 2 pieces of furniture that went immediately to happy recipients.
TFS
Your leather bag is classic form and color. It will always be fashionable. Beautiful!
Thank you for this episode. I am approaching menopause and have gained a little weight. You have given me some perspective that I find helpful.
Wow, Dawn, i can't wait to hearing from you and the Mexico trip! And your advice for simplyfing our wardrobe is insane, it just changed my life! ❤❤
Pale colours look so much better on you. It suits your skin tone.
That shade of blue is so flattering on you! (I love the black etc too) it just compliments your eyes & skin tone beautifully! Great video as always
A smile is contagious! We all need to do our bit to cause outbreaks worldwide 😁💕
It makes me smile every time I watch your show! And I learn new things that make so much sense.
Something that helped me pare down my wardrobe was learning my Kibbe body type. It helped me understand what cuts and styles are best suited for me and why certain clothes never seemed to work on me.
"Trend-resistant clothing" - love that term! I'm going to adopt it🙂 Thanks, Dawn!
I agree blue top makes your eyes pop. Looks good.😊
I decluttered my clothes several years ago. That was great until I became handicapped and have to wait for other people to come do my laundry. So now I need to buy some new clothes to have enough to last between washings. Wish I had the other clothes back now .
I do love your videos. I don't understand, look where? 😊
So simple just to wear a smile. I’ve been doing it all day. Thank you.
