I have an old Bausch and Lomb magnifying glass that I did not realize was Bakelite. Someone pointed out to me that the handle has an art deco design on it. I checked, and it is definitely a 1930's Bakelite magnifying glass. I had a collector's item and didn't even know it!!
This video reminds me of my grandpa. Cool upload. Bakelite is famous in the AK47/74 community, so much so, people dye modern plastics a specific shade of brownish orange to get the distinctive "Bakelite look". I had no clue the "thick black tough heavy plastic" from the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's was all Bakelite.
@@sambaker3233 yes.. there's even a "Playstation community", and how about those "muscle car enthusiasts", I mean.. what da!? You'd be surprised, I guess, that people congregate around things they like! They do crazy, off the wall things, such as share information.. it's just wild.
It's absolutely priceless to look back at how we took the small steps to our modern world. I would love to see the reaction of an engineer of this era upon seeing an ABS plastic, silicone baking dish, or aerogel
Simple reaction to ABS - cheap and useless but good only for one time use toys. Bakelite lost because of price and is usefull only for items which can live longer than you if we really look at modern day plastics used in consumer products it is kind of mechanical properties which engineers throwed to the trash bin in bakelite time.
Lead molds, Asbestos filler material, the smell of phenolics in the air and absolutely no dust collection. One has to commend the optimism here. Still, it is a unique material. To think that at one point almost complete cars were made from this material (Trabant).
MY PARENTS STILL HAVE light switches in this plastic and skirting boards which is very rare..My dad knows they have 5 per cent asbsteos inside.proberly why he just left them there all these years...They lived there 45 years plus...
Jars and bottle caps were still a thing! This is when they were able to create sealable plastic containers, soda bottles etc. everything was glass and metal up til then. Crazy to have only been so recent
There actually were records made out of Bakelite! Edison (ass) and another guy I forgot the name of then made their own "version" which was very similar to Bakelite. Never really took off due to their prices however

Bakelite is very permanently stable, of course it is relatively brittle from the start. You might mean celluloid, which often becomes brittle and breaks into pieces.
LEAST THIS INVENTION WE CANT BLAME THEM BECAUSE ONLY TIME WOULD TELL US THIS PLASTIC COULD BECOME BRITTAL AND EXPOSE THE INNER SUBSTANCES..WE LIVE AND LEARN...
Asbestos so long as it's not disturbed, will not hurt you. Both of you could find some value in opening up a chemistry book and understanding active versus inert properties of materials...

Its interesting that bakelite is still one of the best plastics for high heat and power electronics.
Asbestos.

around 2:52 says asbestos was added too in the mix, crazy times, awesome documental!
That is why it is important to take care not to breath in bakelite particles should a peice break.

Watching all this manufacturing and no safety glasses, only one instance of protective gloves. Yes, we've come a long way.
Gloves? Is it cold where you live?
Bakelite is beautiful I love it.

So cool !
Awesome video too, for 1936 :D
I assume this was impractical for manufacturing phonograph records. Before the 50s records were made of shellac.

Oh good asbestos in telephone molds :p the past was the worst hahah

Sad to think that most of these people died of cancer.
And why would you say that?

Wow- they used bakelite on everything! They’re also very exposed to formaldehyde...
And cancer-causing asbesto not good.
