I’ve got news for the poster. Getting hit in the back is not a bean ball. Your bean is slang for your head. A bean ball is thrown at the batter’s head, not his back. Yup, Sandy could be mean. Just ask Frank Robinson. Sandy drilled him twice.

    Drysdale
didn't have to hit one of his players for him to retaliate. I was at a Dodger game, when a guy homered off him. The next batter did the same. The 3rd batter, you guessed it....bean ball. My old man hated the Dodgers. For the next, however many innings, he yelled at Big D, "you cry baby" every time he entered the dugout, we sat right behind the dugout. And yes, I watched the rest of the game (I was 10), about seven rows up....aw the memories!

At age 88 (as of 2024) Koufax, who was elected to the HOF in 1972 at age 36, holds the record for having being a Cooperstown enshrinee for the last 52 years, and counting. Wille Mays, actually the oldest living member of the HOF at age 93 received his plaque 44 years ago. However, Drysdale, elected at age 48, was a HOF member for only 8 years, due to his premature death at age 56.

Koufax followed by hitting Brock in the left shoulder with his fastball. Drysdale thought the thud of Koufax's fastball against Brock was so loud it reverberated throughout the stadium. Brock, he said, fell like a deer that had been shot. Standing up, Brock refused to show he was hurt and would not rub his shoulder until he returned to the dugout. None of the Cardinals charged the mound; in the sixties, players still regarded hit batsmen as an accepted part of the game.

There's another story about a pitcher, I believe it was Lew Burdette, who hit Cardinal 1st baseman, Bill White (if memory serves). The next inning Burdette leads off and catcher, Tim McCarver starts pounding and rubbing his mitt in anticipation and Burdette asks, "This gonna hurt, ain't it?" Sure enough, Gibby drills him. Of the 2, I'd rather Sandy hit me, not Gibby.

Drysdale was known as a headhunter, particularly early in his career. He was the instigator of a number of bench clearing brawls in those years. His temper sometimes got the better of him, and when that happens, a pitcher will quickly lose his effectiveness. Having said that, he was among the top starters in the game for virtually his entire span in the big leagues. And he died far too soon.

Drysdale is reported to have said that Brock refused to rub it and attempted to "man up" and make it to first, but couldn't. He said that Brock dropped to his knees while attempting to walk to first, and had to leave the game right there. That's a great story from Big D, but unfortunately, it isn't true.
Here is what happened. Brock made his way to first base and like so many star players in the game do, he made Koufax pay again. He promptly stole second base.
But the beaning took its toll on Brock. First, because he had to leave the game two innings later and go to the hospital for x-rays, (that were negative). Second, because the beaning actually knocked him out of the next five games, with only a brief pinch running appearance a few days later

Drysdale, a great pitcher and not the man to fight over the plate with, ironically had a fear of being injured by a line drive up the middle during his playing career. In August 1969, after a Roberto Clemente shot whistled into the outfield, Drysdale flicked what felt like an insect off his neck, but discovered blood on his fingers. Clemente's drive had torn the skin off the top of Drysdale's ear. Shaken, Drysdale allowed a home run to the next batter Willie Stargell and the next time up, he walked Clemente. Six days later Drysdale retired just one year after his greatest season in 1968 when he broke the then record for scoreless innings pitched. While Don indeed had shoulder problems for much of the latter part of his career and this may have been a major factor in choosing retirement, there's little doubt that the Clemente liner helped Don make up his mind a bit sooner.

In St. Louis, we spell competitor, G-I-B-S-O-N. Fun fact, he has 24 HR's, incl. 2 World Series home runs (unusual for a modern pitcher, not named Ruth) and 18 more than their once shortstop, Dal Maxvill.

Big D has his story wrong. The game was Wednesday, May 26, 1965 at Dodger Stadium. Attendance: 30,794, Time of Game: 2:26 Earlier in the game Brock laid down a bunt that Koufax blew. Brock was credited with a single and stole the bases. After Brock was hit, he went to first and then stole second. Two inning later he left the game and had his back x-rayed. He missed 5 games and made appearances as a pinch runner for a few afterwards. The Cards won 2 to 1.

In fairness to Lou Brock (the greatest & more importantly to me, most exciting base stealer of my time) he was just being himself. As he galloped around the bases with ease. That said, I have never had a problem with pitchers 'owning' the plate, as well. And obviously both players lived another day & went on to H.O.F. careers. So no harm, no foul.

Brock "embarrassed" Koufax legally with the strength of his playing ability. Hitting Brock in the back hard enough to put him out for a month is hard enough to have made him a quadriplegic for the rest of his life like Christopher Reeve if he had hit him in the spine or killed him if it hit him in the neck. Drysdale misremembers a few things.. According to baseball reference.. the game in question occurred May 26, 1965. Brock had two at bats, one hit, and three stolen bases. He did not walk however. From this Brock must have singled and stolen one base, stuck out, reached by a fielder's choice - not a walk- ,stolen two bases then scored, and then the 4th plate appearance when he was plunked. He missed a week, not a month (although he was a pinch runner in one of the games that week.

Brock should've taken the bat to his left arm for doing that. Koufax is a coward for doing this, and I bet he really regrets it today. I have no respect for Drysdale's comments either. Thanks. Correction duly noted. Yes Mr. Conigliaro. Sandy is my childhood idol--the game was played under different 'accepted' protocols then and I get that. You backed your teammates and returned an opponents slight, tit for tat. Violence, as you well know, should never become an accepted strategy in any situation in sports. Pitches at 98 mph thrown at the head of aggressive hitters crowding the plate was always an option. Defensive lines targeting quarterbacks, teams intent on injuring the already injured and so on. The Shaq attack strategy of throwing bench players at fouling a poor free throw shooter who can't be stopped inspired rule changes, didn't it?
Wilt the Stilt's dominance moved the basket height. Many former athletes'
head trauma injuries are still being challenged, sadly, by pro sport counsel.
