I got to know him over the course of a week during spring training in Vero Beach in 1992, one of the friendliest and classiest guys I've ever met.

For a power pitcher Drysdale has good control and he really knew how to work the strike zone, not just outside and inside but high and low. He got a lot of high strikes that would not be strikes today. Really live fastball with movement. His manager said his1963 World Series shutout against the Yankees where he beat Bouton was one of the best pitched games he ever saw.

HOF person, player. A class act with the "lefty," greatest of times.

Having Koufax & Drysdale in your rotation? Geez.

Unbelievable movement on his balls. Reminds me of Dwight Gooden who had similar movement in his prime.

Big D was a real problem for batters.

His HOF plaque says "sidearmer", but I really see more of a 3-quarters delivery.

"Big" Don wouldn't walk batters, he would just hit them with the first pitch. He said, "Why waste those other 3 pitches !".

Surprised at his low leg kick out of the wind-up & none out of the stretch. Surprised b/c s/o power pitchers normally have a high kick. Gets them that much closer to the plate. Ryan, Seaver, Koufax, Gibson, etal. High leg kick or not, Drysdale was the terminator.

During the years 1963-1968, baseball rules specifically allowed strikes to be called for pitches shoulder high.

Higher mound, too. It helps to be throwing downhill.

Not sure Drysdale could pitch now because he would watch these guys flipping bats and next time up drill them. He would get thrown out of every game.

That Don in a time machine. Pitchers today aren’t sensitive bitches like they were in the past. If he was coming up today he would not be precisely the same guy that you’re reminiscing about.
