I own both of these. When you pull the back battery cover off the Vox it sounds like a different amp. Much more resonant and added mid-range. The THR depends completely on electronics for tone and resonance. The only advantage THR has is the computer interface capability. Busk with Vox, record with THR.
Hi Rick. I just got the Vox as well. I was disappointed in the overall sound at first. But experimenting I found that if you block of the front "port" on the amp and as you said open the back, I have only opened it a little bit like between a thumb and guitar picks with and found exactly what you are saying. I was totally going to take it back to GC and either get a Roland Cube or other amp. However, this is a game changer by just messing with how the cabinet is set up.
I used to do this and it definitely gave it some better mids. I accidentally put it on top of a stove the other day not realizing it was hot and melt the bottom of the housing, so just for fun I removed the parts and made a nice little vintage style wood cab. I made the back ported and the front speaker opening smaller, it sounds amazing now.
Just bought a THR5 (in 2020) and it doesn't rattle. Had it a week or so, loving it so far as a desktop practice amp. Thanks for the compare to the Vox too.
The Vox Sounds more clean and The THR sounds more distorted, for busking I'll go with Vox because is better for my acoustic electric guitar and my uke and it's not too complicated (and also have a microphone plug), for recording and practice I'll go with yamaha, it depends what you need
Any colorations should be addressable within the computer interface, if not from the dials (bright and mellow are not magical elements, they are descriptors of equalizer settings, filters, cut-offs, etc.). I see the scores of presets available as a great starting point to explore how the controls affect the sound, and then you can tweak further, then store your own unique settings, move them into the five presets on the THR unit, and just play.
I think I'd give that one to the Vox. Although I can't say how it sounded in the room, through my headphones the Vox has more of a full sound to it. I'd love to see a shoot out between the Vox and the Roland Micro Cube.
+Roy Benson they both sounded good in room, except for the metal rattlebI kept getting on the THR. If I come across a good deal on a Micro Cube, I'll definitely do a comparison. 👍🎸
They both have their merits to be sure. But, after all is said about each amp on tone and features etc, the vox costs half as much as the yammy so for me at least, it's no contest. It's the vox hands down
Thanks for the comparison! I own several of the Yamaha THR series (THR5, THR5A, and THR10c), and briefly owned the Vox Mini3G2. I have to agree that the Vox has a fuller tone, but the big difference for me is the portability of the Yamaha THR line. Using either the fitted bag available from Yamaha, or simply a large camera bag, widely available, for the THR5, you can easily take these with you on a plane, train, or just walking around. The Vox is heavier and bulkier. I will also say that the Yamaha THR10c is a better comparison to the Vox in terms of tone - it really is a fine small amp. But,then again, it costs almost twice as much...
I have the mini 5 & the THR 10. Mine doesn't rattle at all. Love em both but thr sound is amazing with pinch of reverb. Gives a stereo space quality that is to die for. Love em both though.. Good comparison.
I love my thr5 but I do have rattle probs. I don't use it for loud playing anyway. I still regret selling a Vox pathfinder 15 SS. Epic tones from a SS amp
ok it's not just mine then. I did have it up really loud, but that's pretty bad that the metal rattles. That's the hardest I've pushed it, so I hadn't noticed until now. :)
lando27music I don't know how new your thr is but the first batch had a software issue that made it shut off when played loud on battery only. I assume they fixed it by now. Great sound for plugging an iPhone into
Wade Wilson a Vox pathfinder is a different kettle of fish to a THR5 , I know people actually do small gigs with pathfinder 15s you can line out them to the desk and they are very loud for a practice amp. I have recently needed a practice tool where I can hear any mistakes and get a cranked sound at very low volume , and for this the THR5 is absolutely superb, my Marshall 80 watt valvestate even at 0.5 on volume still carried through the house, probably the 2 x 12 speakers. I have just got a Thr5 though and was able to practice at a reasonable volume to hear any effects of improper string damping or other superfluous string noises that may hinder my progress. I must say it can sound thin through my headphones at the moment as they are the cheapest sennheisers available, they were about £11 10 years ago so I may get som audio technical ath m40 or akg 240, but it looks like I won’t even need them as it is very quiet to practice with. I did own a mini 3 for years and used to take it busking to use as a vocal amp above a dreadnaught acoustic , I also once used it at a very low volume acoustic jam night in a pub to play some lead with , but I ended up selling it . I love my new Thr5 to bits though, it is the ultimate practice tool. I mainly use the brit hi (jcm) model , and I find the crunch is good for playing Rolling Stones type stuff . Clean is also nice with a touch of chorus if required but nice on its own. If anyone can recommend some headphones they use with theirs for a good sound I would be grateful. I am looking forward to using it as an audio interface with my Mac too
Vox for the cleans. Yamaha for the crunch. IMO. The vox has a much warmer tone on the cleans, whereas the THR sounds tiny and thin. But on the flip side the THR has much better definition in its overdrive, the vox tends to loose its grip on the tones at that point.
Thank you Landon ! I already have the VOX DA5 (the previous model from the Mini3) and was eying the THR10/II since it has the bass setting. But except for the marshally tones, I do prefer the vox all in all (the price difference also plays a part in this). Funnily enough, Brian May posts music tutorials during the lockdown and seemed to have a VOX mini as a practice amp :). Did you try it with pedals ?
that's interesting because the Yamaha is more expensive here. I would pick the Yamaha if you needed an amp that could also connect to a computer for recording. and I would pick the Vox for busking. tone wise, that's all subjective. 😊
For me the THR5 was the winner. The Vox was good but a little warmer and not as clear as the THR5. THR5 had better distortion imo too. Good video. I'd like to hear how the Boss Katana compares
Actually I’d like to hear against what you did here. You do a great job in playing the same riff and effects without a lot of talking. The riffs are also practical to really hear the tone. Do any of the mini’s have a line out for a cabinet? Thanks
I have a VOX Mini G3 and a Yamaha THR10 and I kinda prefer the Yamaha coz it has bigger sound and it doesn't sound boxy. However, the VOX Mini just looks so cute for a room decoration and it can also be double up as a Karaoke speaker which you can just hook up a mic! My family loves it! No experience with the THR5 but the THR10 is gig worthy and I have used it a lot with the band!
LOL "More natural sounding," what exactly does "natural" electric guitar, powered up and fed into a system of electronics then after dramatic amplification and signal alterations, is sent thru transformers and into magnetic coils that drive large speaker diaphragms to recreate sound that bears minute resemblance to the faint vibrating string? Tube conceit dictates that different = worse, if it is not a tube amp, different = better, if it is. Just ignore the hundreds of times more control, colorations, and changes the little digital boxes can impart, and which no one on stage could ever distinguish from your tube amp. Of course you still believe turntables are sonically superior, too.
@gary morris Your point, a year later, is whut, pray tell? Your two cents (sorry, two blahs) adds nothing to the debate besides your pathetic need to dis a total stranger who was making a point. You must envy Trump's Magnificent Powers of third grade insult comedy. And, I bet you're one who will keep replying, as you just have to get the last word in. Winning, bigly. Not me.
Another good review (I'd take the Vox). You're one of the few reviewed I would trust so..... I'm unsure about choosing a good gigging amp (affordable). I have a BlackStar HT40 which is good and I just acquired a Fender Deluxe plus (94watts) 112 which is stupidly loud at home (my soundproofing isn't as good as yours) but not too sure about it. What do you think would make a good working guitarists amp (combo) clean sounds mostly transportable, reliable and sounds good? I'm a bit sceptical about the Katana Amps. Too many effects and pushed too hard by some reviewed puts me off - but I may be wrong. I had BlackStar ID:260 - which are really nice but what do you think? Should I just shut up and keep the HT40? Sorry to ramble...haha
I tend to lean towards Vox sounds. In fact I just bought a Vox AC30CC2 which is the same as the one I had last year. I like the tones, the simplicity and the power when needed - not so keen on the weight! It looks the part too - in my view. I still have the Blackstar HT40 which I will hold onto for a few weeks until I'm sure I've done the right thing - it's a really good, simple and powerful amp too. I tried them side by side today and the Blackstar surprised me how well it compared; slightly different sound but really nice - and its a 1x12 so a bit lighter!! I suspect the Vox will stay though - or maybe I will hold onto them both and sell the Fender which I basically don't use .
Exactly what I came here to post. The vox is very reasonable, so even if it lacks something that the Yamaha doesn't (which I don't think it does) value for money goes to vox.

very interesting comparation, I own both thr5 and thr10x wich are the most inspiring amps in the market for home use to me. I don´t know why yamaha doesn´t release a bigger combo similar to boss katana 50, it would be nice!! On the other hand thr´s models take pedals really well.
I know mate, but they should make also a combo to compete with Boss, As far as i know a lot of people are waiting for a yamaha combo with the thr quality but more powerful. If they put in the market a 50 watt combo or something like that it will be a success!! IMO
The flanger on the G2 sounds crap unless you can adjust it. The reverb on the THR5 seems crap unless you can adjust it. I'm guessing you can't adjust them on both. If I had to choose, it would be the Vox I think. I mean the Yamaha has a bit of a better tone but the effects don't seem good at all apart from the flanger which is miles better than the Vox. I got my mini katana now and that's a great little amp. I might mod it to take the reverb tank off of my park g10r which i upgraded, even if I have to just simply screw it to the back of the katana lol. Or maybe I'll leave the katana is it is as it is a brilliant small battery powered amp and the reverb effect of the delay ain't bad at all to be honest.
I've got a THR5. I like: pretty cool design, nice amp types, mobile, can change sounds when connected to pc, free Cubase AI software!!! I dislike it for: rattling! The 'Brit hi' and 'Modern' amp types (the metal ones) are really overdrived I think. Much louder than the cleaner amp types and can't go upon 2/3 of volume because the unit is starting to collapse.... so these amp types are not really well balanced I think. And no treble, middle and bass knob on the unit: I miss it so much.
Lando27Music Hi! Yeah that rattling so annoying. Without that this would be a perfect amp. But. I've watched a lot of youtube video and no rattling on those amps. I'm pretty sure something is no good with my unit. I think will go for garantie. Could you solve that rattling problem? For example at 5:00 you are using the amp on a high setting with metal amp type and no rattling at all. My amp would distroy itself with that setting... 😎
I own both of these. When you pull the back battery cover off the Vox it sounds like a different amp. Much more resonant and added mid-range. I have the THR10 and VOX Mini 3 G2. I find the THR10 brighter, where the VOX is very mellow. I've had zero metal rattle with the THR.

+greatvanzinni hey thanks! maybe Ive got a bad THR unit. It was only rattling on the higher gain amp models
Hey, which one would you suggest to buy if I want some classic rock sound? mini5 or thr10?and which is more versatile?
either one could do rock for sure 🎸👍
Okay the Yamah is more modern but the Vox has the sweetness...
I love my thr5 but I do have rattle probs. I don't use it for loud playing anyway. I still regret selling a Vox pathfinder 15 SS. Epic tones from a SS amp

I have the THR5, I moved and never found the power cord. I liked it when I used it though. I have to buy a new power cord...
im confused but do the amps have built-in effects... reverb, chorus, etc (sorry if that sounds dumb)
they do have built in effects yes. 😊

I think the bigger cabinet/speaker help give it more low end
lando27music I agree, great comparison thanks again.

that's interesting because the Yamaha is more expensive here. I would pick the Yamaha if you needed an amp that could also connect to a computer for recording. and I would pick the Vox for busking. tone wise, that's all subjective. 😊

I find "Line in" to be the cleanest sound on the Vox.
The Line channel is the perfect pedal platform, I use it at home
I found Vox on acoustic amps, can I use it on acoustic/electro
I would check Vox' website or contact them. I can't tell you yes or no :)
May try with "Line in" input, that actually is the cleanest sound.
How abt fender champ 20? What do u think?

If the THR5 is rattling try tightening the screws with a screwdriver.
Vox wins that hand's down. A lot warmer in the tone. And the effects sounded better.

Pues para salir a tocar el yamaha se ve muy delicado y como que aguanta menos la intemperie y el chiste de estos amplificaforcitos es que lo puedas llevar a donde quieras, igual el yamaha esta bien pinche caro bro
Yamaha has a full chromatic tuner. Vox only tunes to 'E'
Yamaha can be used as an audio interface. Vox cannot.
Yamaha has a tone editor. Vox does not.
WTF was that that popped up at 6:23 ?
The first rule of amp club, is you don’t talk about amp club. :)
😂😂 calrissian
I love my vox 😎
🎸👍
Vox hands down for value but the Yamaha has a little more burst or punch.
Thnaks good videp
flanger on the vox sounded awful
All flangers sound awful though.
And no treble, middle and bass knob on the unit: I miss it so much.
k it wasn't just me with a rattling issue. that's too bad. :)
Vox luv
Why at 6,24 min u put a black man with a gun?
It's Lando from Star Wars!
They still made lava lamps?
no 😝
Vince Gill has thr Yamaha...I have tge VoxMinie3
I have the yamaha and im glad! The vox sounds proper meh. So much more of a crisp tone out of the thr5
Hands down THR
The yamaha is much less altering the guitar tone than the vox.
winner vox
The Yamaha sounds thin
thanks for the feedback! 😊👍
VOX!
Vox's high gain was disappointing. A little to dirty.
they sound a bit diff in person
Vox its almost good but cheaper
🎸👍
Vox
Roland micro cube gx ,is the best...
I love Yamaha THR5, the best.
Yamaha build beautiful intruments, but they have to work on the sounding!! Both are not very good!😎🎸
Yamaha THRs are amazing in real life, this demo is not in any way accurate to what it actually sounds like. There is no rattle in mine either.
thr5 sounds too nasally
I liked mini G2 Vox.
great amp!
