Lol...that to be honest is not surprising. They are surprisingly tough co sidering the blade. But they certainly last. I love my 8"s. It a great knife. Thanks for watching. Appriciate your support.
Opinel carbon are the sharpest knives I've ever used, easy to keep sharp too. Very light in the pocket. The Opie, like the Mora, is a true knife legend.
The thinner it is near the edge the less metal it takes to make it keen once more. A mora is harder because there's a lot of metal that has to move, and it's very hard to find a flat enough rock to make it even. I found a buck 112 once at a camp site in horrible shape and a river rock turned it sharp again.
No other company or maker, produces such a fine full convex grind with that unbelievable consistency, where all the blades they've ever made, are like out of a photo copy machine! Same goes for their heat treatment! Opinels, the older Morakniv, and the Victorinox SAKS are the best value in the knife world and the best users in the same time! All of them are the Kings on what they do, and I dpn't see that ever change!! No9 Carbon, is my favorite by far, followed by the No8.
The virobloc which locks the blade is made out of spring steel. Have opinel in use for for more than a decade now and they are the best companions. If u close them and use the spine in closed status then u can grind wood and ferro rod perfectly. Biggest size is nr 13 with 22cm blade. This things are comrades for lifetime. Great video, greetings from Germany.
A local store started carrying Moras and Opinels. Just got a Mora Companion in stainless, and an Opinel 8 Carbone! Pretty excited to get out and use them!
Awesome knives. The stainless mora and opinel use is also excellent. Tough, easier to sharpen than even 440a, and is very near the steel they use for razor blades but a little softer and more stainless.
I love my Opinel No 8’s!!! Definitely the sharpest factory knives. I’ve got one in my fire kit and one in my cook kit!!! Hands down best kitchen prep knife!!!
I prefer my scandi grind hultafors knife for all types of woodworking. I reserve my Opinel for food prep. However, my son sits there whittling away with his Opinel and does feather sticks and starts fire with it. 👍
Nice...I use em for everything , food prep, fire starting etc. Handy little knife. I also modify them for fun. Appreciate you watching and commenting, be safe
Opinel makes some of the most useable folders out there. I do like the no. 7,8,9,10, and 12. They are very easy to modify into whatever you want and for the money they're hard to beat.
Yep. I have been modifying the no 9 about 4 of them. Joy. Great projects. Love em Opinels. Thier no 12 saw us perfect for a day hike in the pocket. Thanks fir watching and commenting. Be safe
Geoga, I just subscribed to your channel; since you're a fellow Minnesotan, it seemed only proper. I like Opinel knives, but I'm not as big a fan of them as you are. I only own two, a No. 12 and a No. 8. There are a lot of things I like about Opinels, although I'll admit I carry them as backups to a fixed blade when I'm in the field. Like you, I prefer the carbon steel versions. The only modification I made to the No. 12 was to drill a hole in the handle for a lanyard and threaded a short length of paracord through it for a lanyard to allow me to hang it from a packstrap when I'm hiking or foraging. I modified the No. 8 much more than I did the No. 12. I was fiddling around with a fire steel, and I discovered that the carbon steel Opinel uses is a great striker for a firesteel. As much for fun as anything else, I added a sturdy pocket clip that I got as a spare with a folding knife and now I can clip it to my belt or whatever as backup knife and a firesteelstriker. I see they sell an Opinel with a pocket clip now, but it wasn't available when I made my modifications.
You'll like the N09 Carbon WAY more. The No8 is for small hands and for light use. The No9 is literally perfect. It's more stable and comfortable for stronger cuts and If you file down their tips, you can easily give them the most beautiful drop point shape, which is way more useful and way stronger and tougher, than the stupid tip they come with. I wish I could show you, my modifications and how great they look, with all burned handle, drop point, and lemon patina!!
@@2ndchancegeorge np! I went with a no9 in olive wood w/ my initials on the handle, as well as a no5 for fun. And one of their little 'natural sharpening stones'
The one with stainless steel blade is perfect for occasional use ... you can have it just in case in your car, it will help you for occasionnal picnic. The one with carbon blade is better for heavy duty, as this one is easier to sharpen but needs a constant check againt rust. Sorry for my english ! :-)
These are good knives. slicers not choppers or stabbers. Sharpen them right in Carbon and you can shave with it. I carry a leatherman rebar and an opinel number 9. I own a 6 and an a 7.
My favorite , for many years. Nobody needs anything else for a knife... Use Ballistol for maintenance and a belgian blue stone to sharpen it, or strop it.
Bought a Chinese copy before seeing this video, which won't be here for a few weeks, so it will be interesting to compare it to yours. I can't see it being an equal but I wanted to try one out. Like you--I haven't had an Opinel before. Thanks George. Keep those shoes of yours waterproofed 🤔
Opinel knives are great... I always carry a Victorinox Executive (old style 74mm) as my EDC, but I have a lot of other knives. The Opinel knives are great project knives for customizing, especially the handles... several good TH-cam videos on customizing and refurbishing them. I have a No.8 that I just fitted with a very nice Sambar stag roll handle, and added a bale using a D-ring, and nice paracord lanyard... got a nice leather sheath for it too off of ebay... ordered one for a No.9 due to the larger handle, and it fits perfect. Also had to buy a No.7 (used of ebay), for a Sambar stag roll taper for one of my next projects. Had a No.6 that was too small for my first Sambar stag roll, but I discovered that I had a very nice cocobolo wood handle from a rifle cleaning rod where the rod broke off (I save most everything !)... this nicely figured wood handle will make a great handle for the No.6. Yeah, I love these Opinel knifes, even without customizing them !
I’ve been looking at these knives for a long time. Came across this video. A few days ago I ordered a number six. I wanted the eight but they were out of stock. Subscribe to your channel. I like your style. Stay safe. Also I will be getting the number eight in the near future.
Thanks for the support. Hopefully the number 6 works for you. Looking at knife manufactures they all seem to be having supply issues. But hopefully that will change.
This is exactly why I want to order this knife! To carve wood! I want to make wands from the Harry Potter movies and Hogwarts Legacy game when I'm relaxing in nature or at home. Carve wands all day half of the week. And for that I want a knife that is cheap... can hold its edge for a while... and is very durable. I do love to sharpen knives but not multiple times a week which is what I would have to do if I used the knives I own already in the same price range!😅 They are cheap steel that gets dull the moment you do the ow so big and bad cardboard test! One cut! That's all it takes with cardboard to make my knives dull. And to see what this Opinel can do on youtube videos for the same price... it can't get better than this for this price right? This is the one knife to rule them all! This knife is gonna make a lot of wands in my hands! Whenever I find a nice piece of wood that has fallen from a tree I have to carve it into a wand with this knife!
Yep, they will be perfect fir light duty carving. Both stainless (inox) or the carbon. I prefer the carbon. Carry a strop or ceramic rod and do that a couple times between sharpening them. They clean up the edge nicely between sharpens. Thanks for the support, always appriciated. Oh I modified a No9 to a short wharncliffe blade. It the best whittler I have. Be safe the holidays

So easy to sharpen. One can use a stone from a creek, and then strap it on the jeans, or the belt, and then its scary sharp.
