- I have been thinking about Opinel Knives for a long time now. Literally thinking about how an Opinel would fit my needs...my intended use and style and how it would apply to my outdoor skills. I came to terms with the idea that regardless of field use, an Opinel is an essential piece of a collection...and in my case it would become a blank canvas for some customization and "artwork" opportunities. In this video we take a preliminary first look at this set...before my "artwork" to run down the 10 blade set and discuss them in detail.

My No.2 is my most beat up knife and used almost on the daily. I have the keychain version and its attached to my car keys. The amount of times that little no.2 has come in useful is utterly amazing.

It is versatile. Good video again.
I would probably drill a hole at the end of the #2 and put it on a keychain. I have a SAK that I use in a similar way and I have used it for small tasks like sharpening a pencil or opening mail. The SAK also has the added benefit of scissors though which come in handy often as well.

Great overview and presentation! The classic design and great blade geometry made me an Opinel fan. My go-to is the No. 6, but that could change if I move someplace where I can carry whatever knife I like. The really small ones could be good options for folks who must deal with truly Draconian knife laws. Though I rarely use them, they have a bit of a novelty factor that appeals to me. Now I want to get a few carbon Opinels and see what kind of patina I can force on them...

Personally, I don't go below No. 6s due to size and the lack of the lock. I EDC a customized (striped, stained, burnered, and scorched) No. 8 in a sheath and customized No. 6s are left in jackets as spares. I debated going with a No. 9 for EDC but decided the No. 8 hit that sweet spot.
My favorite is the N 6. Small but still locking. Large enough for me for food and daily tasks.
Assuming the little guys like the #2, 3, and 4 etc have a 90 degree spine like the larger models, I would consider including them in mini emergency fire kit. They may make a good ferro rod scrapper and good for preparing small tinder, shavings and so on
Or you could just strike a spark off the steel since their carbon
I got a No.2 for the novelty. Just a collection piece. But I sharpened it to Jesus sharp and its a fantastic letter opener
When a design hasn't needed to be changed for 150 years you know the company is doing something right. I have a No. 8 slimline and a No. 9
Great knives, and excellent quality for the price.
No.4 is my EDC. Not threatening and legal in most places. It doesn’t take much space on a hike or fishing trips. Useful for small jobs, including slicing cheese and fruit etc. The carbone develops a nice patina and holds its edge longer than stainless steel.

There are many out there with small hands that like smaller knives. My girlfriend, for example, has what seem to be the world's smallest hands, one of the smaller Opinel knives would be perfect for her. Also, that #2 is awesome. I recently lost my tiny Swiss army knife that I kept on my keyring, that #2 would be a great replacement.
Honestly, seeing a company make a knife with so many size options is refreshing. Too often I'll come across a great knife and find out that it isn't a size that would be optimal for me.
Ok, hear me out, the N°2 is basically a scalpel, keep it in your aid kit and keep it sharp and clean, could be good for splinters, an personally I would use it for sewing, cutting thread and trimming leather
Great blades for the price very sharp slices great I only have a mid sized version paid like $12 I think plus I like the old style look though I do admit it doesn’t get much pocket time with everything out there.
My brother got me one of those knives when he came back from France and I have to say they are pretty nice knives

I have several, but my favorite is a number 9 with the banana shaped handle. I’m not sure if they make that handle shape anymore. I bought it about 20 years ago. I have one in 12C27 Inox with an olive wood handle, but the rest are in carbon. I did a custom mustard patina on all the rest that came out beautifully. The #9 is a great camp food prep knife. I’ve never noticed a taste left on my food. Thanks 🎸🔪

Hello, i am french. N 2 and 3 are use for open mail and other situation of life in city. Generaly is the hold men give this number in france, n 4 and 5 is for the children for first knife. Thank you for you video. Merci
I could see the 5 being a nice blade for a child to learn with. The nice thing is the lock is very secure.
Never offer an Opinel under the n°6 size to a child because the smallest sizes haven't a virobloc locking ring. Without any safety to keep the blade opened, it's too dangerous. The size of the blade is not a problem, but the lack of blade locking is a problem.
When I was 10 years old, my grand mother offered me a n°7, I still have it today (I'm 54) and thanks to the locking ring I also still have my fingers.

@@Beowulf_98So are all yours friction folders and slip joints? Something tells me you have more than one knife with a liner lock, frame lock, back lock, axis lock etc. 😂

I use thesmall blade on my swiss army knife a lot. Its about the skze of that number 2. For fishing, cutting lines and knots, or cutting tape and plasters, string or opening stuff. A small blade is pretty useful, though scissors are often better.
Opinel is great because it sits between modern and classic styles of pocket knives so well. Has the same feel and similar look of the old school non-locking slip joint pocket knives and can even be used as one, but you can also twist it to lock it in place for safety as well. The steel is much better than you’ll find on most modern gravity style knives today. It won’t come out as fast as a gravity knife, but if I’m looking for self defense from a knife I would trust a fixed blade knife way before I trust ANY folding knife.
I have an Opinel 7 Slim and it is my EDC, because it is so light, smooth and vanishes in my pocket. I don't feel it at all in my jeans, chinos or khakis. Yes, there are more durable knifes out there who can handle a beating better, but the best knife is the one you have on your hand when you need it. And of course the price. I've lost knifes worth more than a hundred bucks and here in Germany an Opinel costs about 9 Euros and it doesn't hurt as much if shuld ever lose one. :D
It's a full CONVEX grind with a tiny microbevel, that you can easily blend, into a full convex blade, simply by sharpening on a stone or by using sandpapers etc. Again, Opinels are a full convex grind, not flat.
Thank you...YES, you are definitely correct. That was my bad. It's subtle...but you can definitely tell. I did not notice at the time, but now looking closer, it is definitely Convexed. Very tiny microbevel!

I carry a no5 as a food knife here in the UK. With out silly knife laws it's the best edc option. I carry a victorinox for any dirty work and a knifeless leatherman on my belt.
Have received a couple of these knives- not a fan. But the video is excellent!
I always have my No. 6 or 7 in my pocket.
also you might want to strop a new Opinel if you like a razor sharp blad.

Opinel knives are awesome i have n 12 carbon
no 3 is good for backpacking when you're counting every gram to reduce pack weight.
The no 5 and down are usefull in the uk because for us to be able to carry them in public they need to have an under 3 inch blade length and be non locking so we need the non locking compacity of them if we want to have an EDC knife, the uk laws are crazy strict coz people get stabbed all the time here coz we go no guns

no 7 is perfect for split an apple or cutting a breakfast bagel, or breaking down a fried chicken. :) a pocket friend.

Opinel are sharp and durable with a classic wood handle. By the way, they are measured in centimeters in Europe
id say the opinel comes in then u want to edc and not look like ur armed with a weapon when u want to peel a apple in the office.. like its not threatening its just a little tool.. also very cheap also light.. and does the job.. For a average male i like the no8, smaller sizes could be nice if u are a female.. I have a 10 but thats a bit big for carrying.. nice for doing a outdoor bbq stuff like that.

You are the lasts of the world still using inches ... Would you be american ? If you were using the metric system, you would know that the n°12 means that the blade is 12 centimeters long, the n°10 has a 10 cm long blade, etc, etc ... Except for the very small ones, the n°2 has a 3,5 cm blade, but who buys such small knives ? It's more for a collection.
I have read in the comments under that the smallest where made for the children as first knife. I don't agree, because till the n°6, Opinel knives don't have a secured blade with the famous virobloc ring. So if you want to offer a child his/her first knife, offer at least a n°6. The size of the blade doesn't really matter (6,7,8 cm) but safety matters, make sure the blade can be locked.

I use Number 2 on the key ring it is always with me if have my keys with me also it is legal in the UK, it is less heavier than the swiss army knife.
