- The range of possibilities overwhelmed us a wee bit so Nala and I stayed in Ljubljana for longer than expected. We didn’t know if we should start heading south towards Italy or Croatia and spend Christmas at the sea or have a white Christmas at Lake Bled? 🌊⛄️🌞🌨🥵🥶
After sharing my possible routes on Instagram, loads of people got in touch and sent us pictures of Lake Bled and given that next time we’re in Slovenia it won’t be winter we didn’t want to miss the chance to see the lake in the snow 😻 Once the decision was made we were ready to get back on the bike and start heading towards Bled. Think it’s time for some daily dips 🥶

We’re Dean & Nala, and we’ve been best friends since December 2018. I was actually cycling around the world when I heard Nala meowing out for me somewhere in the Bosnian mountains. With no intentions of keeping Nala, I knew i had to save the wee kitten and take her to the vet - but I was well aware of the fact that it might be a bit of a challenge considering I only had a bike. However, despite my concerns, Nala quickly climbed out of the front bag on the bike handle and straight onto my shoulder. Since then, we’ve been travelling the world together. My glum turns to smiles when Dean posts a new video. If we haven't heard from him for what seems like too long, I begin to worry. I calm my worry by remembering these two aren't traveling the US, so they should be well. I know terrible things happen everywhere, but the US has changed very much for the worse.

My cats were VERY worried about Nala when she was meowing for you. They were on high alert and searching for her. Meowser finally tracked the meows down to my phone and started rubbing his face all over it. 😻😻

Mine too. Two came to comfort me when they heard her 😂. It was obviously something distressful in cat language.

I think Nala sees you as her territory and safe spot. That's why she is okay with travelling on the bike or staying in different places every night as long as you are there
Yes, Nala adjusts well in any indoor situation. The only "little" problem is when they first arrive, Dean needs to collect the belongings. Once settled in it is all good. Looking forward to see Dean's videos of their White Christmas. ❄🌨⛄🌲

That would be cute, but she's from Bosnia, if I'm not mistaken. That flag might be a little bit more challenging 🙂
@@judithburke1539 Some here call her Nala Nicholson. If she can take Dean's family name, she can adopt his nationality. A Scottish flag is a simple design for any competent knitter. I hope someone takes up the challenge, if not one of the older Nala fans then Dean's mum or gran.

Yeah, that’s why I worry! Being overly optimistic can be dangerous. Be practical, Dean. Don’t put you or Nala in a dangerous position. Stay in hotels, drink hot liquids, wear protection on exposed skin. It is beautiful though!

Slovenia is a really beautiful country. Everything is clean and well tended to. The people are friendly and well educated. From what I see the people are well taken care of by their government. Might be a great place to live.
Yeah, I’m ashamed that I knew so little about the country, (I think my aged brain is still in Ye Olden Dayes of Yugoslavia) Slovenia sounds super-civilised and well ordered, and with the mixed nature of its language, it’s geography, and pretty damn thrilling cultural history going back eons; it’s really fascinating. Dean and Nala have certainly made me keen to visit.
The entire country is beautiful. Mountains, valleys, aqua blue rivers and lakes, Adriatic coast line, and rules on signage (as in there are no billboards or advertising) and on home building (the house are to be built to exacting standards; you can’t tell a new build from a 500 year old house!) all combine to make Slovenia unforgettable. The people are friendly and actually eager to talk with you, almost everyone speaks English. Education is a high priority there as well as conservation to keep this little gem of a nation green. Wonderful place to visit and to live ❤️🇸🇮

Made me really sad thinking how much pets must suffer when they are abandoned by their owners. Made me wanna hug my cat Alice and tell her how much I love her and will never leave her, but I don't think she would like me to wake her up now 😸😸😸 Dean, please take care on these roads! This video was mesmerizing. I feel like I was transported to Europe. I love traveling with the pair of you and would have loved to have woken up in that hostel with Nala snoozing on my chest. Can't wait to see Lake Bled in the winter and Dean taking a dip. Like he said, the cold keeps you tough...just keep wiping the icicles off of your beard and it'll be fine

It would be great if Dean could include the name of the towns and places he stayed - that hostel for example, I didn´t get the town´s name...
I mean if Dean and Nala came past my house, I would invite them in! Such a pretty kitty, and Dean would have so many interesting stories to share. Sadly don't think my country is on his list (we have brutal pet quarantine laws)

Misfortune can visit anyone at anytime. That is why I have them in my prayers and others as well. I may be in the minority of those who still believe that prayers are still needed and warranted in this world today.

I'm absolutely blown away by the level of Nala's attachment to you, Dean. The moment she realized you were not in the room, she went into panic mode. As I've said before, it's both adorable yet heartbreaking. Your accommodations at Lake Bled look very nice. Hope you and Nala have a wonderful Christmas there.

I like to sleep in my own bed at the end of the day but l also like to see how people live in the rest of the world. With Dean and Nala l get both, and much more.

Scares me, too, especially when she is riding on his shoulder or balancing on top her basket. I always tell Dean (even though he can't hear me through the monitor), "Please please, put her down into the basket when there are cars!" And, yes, a reflective jacket, for both of them, would be good. Otherwise, I've no complaints. Dean is an excellent cat carer. And Nala is as always bright, loving, and huggably adorable.
@@aunum There's plenty of debate in cycling, but hi-vis is not well-regarded - vehicle drivers are used to looking at other vehicles, which have lights, so daytime running lights are a safer option (present like a vehicle, get seen as a vehicle - hi-vis make you look like an outsider or obstruction). Also, hi-vis doesn't work well in low-light or dark conditions - reflective (silver) strips do, but floating random shapes don't often look like a person when seen suddenly - lights work better. Dean does use lights, but I reckon he could use brighter ones, like (eg) Bontrager Ion 200RT - they'd fit his bike too (Bontrager is Trek's accessory brand, and their bikes have 'Blendr' mountings for their lights).

Some thoughts: 1) Have you thought about getting 2 silicone collapsible pet bowls for Nala's food and water? They're light and very compact. 2) When coming into new places to stay, please let the water run for a few minutes in the sink before drinking since you don't know how long it's been sitting there in the pipes before you came, accumulating lead, sediments, and/or other heavy metals. 3) What's the name of the chocolate company gift guy at the end? Good?
it's actually better to not put food in a bowl. Cats prefer the space because it allows their whiskers to not become depressed, which causes them anxiety.
What a fabulous video! The fact that you insist on wearing shorts in that cold weather would make even my teeth chitter!!! I follow another channel where a Brazilian couple travels around the world, now they are in Cairo Egypt... Dear Lord, not a very clean city and people around them all the time asking for money or offering services for money. Such a touristy place... Slovenia, on the other hand, almost looks like Europe´s best hidden secret... feels like old Europe, and the people are so nice and friendly.... I hope I can visit there one day...

Me too, camping outside during wintertime, not good... especially with all that snow around... and Nala had issues already with a heavy cold, so she needs warm and dry places, like cozy hostels, wee hotels or Airbnb.

I’m so impressed that the bike paths are actually plowed! That’s so amazing. Around here once the snow comes the bike paths are closed which is why not so many people bike in the winter! Same here ... if there are any bike paths to begin with. Things are too spread out in the States / designed to require automobiles, maybe.
@@kimlindseyOH Yes. In the last couple of weeks I have taken 2 colleagues who were working with us this year from Argentina and France around to see Christmas lights, et cetera. They have both observed that in certain communities, it is necessary to have your own car, because you cannot get from point A to point B without a car. They have used bicycles to take trips into the next town over, which takes 10 minutes by car, but an hour by bus. Our bus system is very inefficient here on the island. And in communities that are more rural there is no bus service so you have to have a car. Without a doubt our cities are not as dense as in Europe With the exception of larger cities such as Chicago New York LA Boston Detroit et cetera

I think Nala figures herself your protector. She is your first line of defense. Hence, she howls when you leave her because you are without her protection. She sits up in her basket to sniff the smells but more importantly to sniff any potential danger to you. What a great buddy!
Great choice Dean 👍 Bled and Lake Bohinj are gorgeous all year round. Loved our holidays there and the stunning scenery is in my memory banks forever.
