I loved War and Peace. I couldn’t put the book down and found Tolstoy, like Dostoevsky, to be a master of detail explaining the human existence. I read Vanity Fair, a British perspective of the same war, a year or so later. It was a shallow reflection of War and Peace.
@@8MinuteMasterpieces Yes, I did read it in its entirety. It took several months but I thought it was worthwhile. I find it usef to read late at night before bed. Very relaxing.
Fascinating prequil ... The author served in the Crimean war, which undoubtedly gave him ample characters for his book. It is quite likely the characters in the book were based on the lives of people he knew. Faces lost to history.

I read War and Peace many years ago thinking I needed to read a masterpiece to build my personal repertoire. It was a hard read and I didn't finish, finding the last chapters bogged down in philosophical bandering and mental gymnastics. I won't even try to read it again, it's not worth it for me.
Thank you. In todays increasingly shallow Western society, what you are doing is offering a scaffolding and an insight to great works. Allowing Joe 24 Pack and Karen Chardonnay to opportunistically look back at profound happenings through out history. 'Trusting that we can become more mature - in these somewhat - inverse times.

I am glad that you brought up Tolstoy’s disdain for Napoleon as the refutation of the “Great Man Theory” was a very important part of the novel.
Did you read the novel in its entirety? We struggled through finding the time to do so and some of us speed read! :)

This is one of those books I have on my bookshelf that are waiting to be read. I must make the time to read it soon.
The greatest was No doubt at all the works of Kenneth Roberts on the American Revolution, "Arundel" and "Rabble in Arms."

I read the book in a previous life :)> One of the few books from my youth I do not have in my library collection.

I recommend the 2016 BBC version of War and Peace.
