This was amazing television. Joe Davis with the greatest call in 21st century sports, setting the scene up perfectly only for Freeman to oblige on the first pitch. Davis pays homage to Vin Scully with “She is gone”, then he adds “Gibby meet Freddie” as I Love LA begins to play. After sitting in silence allowing the pandemonium of the crowd to tell the story, Davis then pays homage to Jack Buck in response to John Smoltz with “would you say you don’t believe what you just saw?” Just incredible improvisation and impeccable timing by Davis. Absolute tour de force performance in the booth.

@fred How did this top Gibson? Gibson was hobbling on 2 injured legs against one of the greatest closers of all time in Hall of Famer Eckersley. One's hitting power comes from one's legs, putting Gibson at the worst disadvantage, and Gibson fought several of Eckersley's great pitches. The pitcher here couldnt hold Eckersley's jockstrap and gave Freeman one right down the middle. Freeman said his ankle felt fine by this game. Gibson, essentially needing a walker and facing a HOF'er in his prime, was not topped by Freeman. I loved both performances though.

Just listened to this montage of calls on Freddie’s blast last night... and only Joe Davis got it exactly right. He kept it to six words: “She is… Gone! Gibby, meet Freddie.” That’s all that needed to be said. Hat tip to Joe for knowing when to let the moment breathe-just like Vin Scully always did. Great announcers don’t steal the spotlight; they let us live the moment with the fans in the stands. The ones who ramble on? They kill the magic. Vinny was the master at stepping back, Joe nailed it last night, and most Dodger announcers get it. But that montage really drove it home. Thanks, Joe Davis, for keeping it simple and letting the moment speak for itself!
