I've used a bunch of your videos for help in the past and never actually commented or anything but thank you for being awesome at these and for helping me get my car sorted. These really are great.
Very good video, without all the unnecessary commentary which makes other video clips last forever. Straight to the point with helpful tips along the way. Cheers.
FWIW: On a NA MKIV ALH the procedure is the same but the two bolts holding the starter motor to the bellhousing are 18mm heads no 16mm. It's also possible to get at the bottom bolt from the top of the bay with the battery & tray removed. Thanks for the video, helped me sort it out in a parking lot.
Top video. my starter just gone on mk4 1.8t. I have little mechanical knowledge but not afraid to get in and have a go. this video explains and makes it look pretty straightforward. top work my friend. you've probably saved me a garage bill.
Thank you ever so much, a well explained video. My dog is sticking and not returning so I need to take mine out to see if I can release it. Your video has made this an easier job.
Injoyed video, showed what needs doing to remove starter with not a lot of crap that needs left unsaid. Other how to video makers should take note Thanks
Many thanks. I'm replacing a starter on a 2006 Seat Ibiza 1.9 tdi and it's a similar procedure. There are slight differences, as to be expected, but I gleamed enough info from you to make the job worry free.
Happy days, my starter is making a noise when I start the car. I'm an engineer anyway but, it's always handy to watch these things laid out in laymans terms. Thank you, I've subscribed.
Nice video mate. I'm hoping that it's the same on my 2002 Octavia. Same engine, so fingers crossed. If it turns out to be the same I'll give ya a holler back to let peoples know. Thanks for taking the time to do the walk through and for upping the video ;)
Usually, the main cable leading from a battery to the starter is (+), i.e. positive while (-) is taken naturaly via bolting to an engine. Just remark - I do not insist it is so on every each engine/starter installation. Generally great and well illustrative video, thx.
Technically it's negative...say you for example a battery and a bulb with a red and black wire....you splice the black and add motor in between the two black wired you spliced...still makes a circuit all the starter is doing is completing the circuit
Superb job sir, I have learnt a lot of time saving methods of doing things your way👍🏻 Any chance you can do a vid on combating the squealing noise for the starter motor?
Good video but here Some improvements to it: 1.- the negative lead from the battery should be removed first (to avoid accidental sparks) 2.-the battery case has another bolt ( metric 10) at the rear back linking it to the air case. Notice its mounting and be careful not to drop it. 3.- the cables are held together with a plastic piece that is attached to an L shaped metal part screwed (13 mm) to the upper bolt that holds the motor ( 18 mm). Quite tricky today slip out. 4.- There is another bolt to be removed to release the air conditioned pipe from the starter motor ( they are linked by a metal part to the lower bolt). Be sure to use the appropiate tools as even not being a difficult job, can be tricky to unscrew some bolts due to lack of room.
Thanks a lot for this video, I'll be changing my starter Motor soon since It's past it's lifetime and I am having trouble starting my car. One question though, can I remove it just without reaching getting underneath the car?
Is it the same process on a VW polo 02 plate. Because the car makes a screetching noise when it's started. VW forums say it has something to do with the starter motor needing lube. Great vid by the way
I have a 2006 VW Polo. I am almost done removing the starter (all the bolts are loose) but I am struggling with the top bolt (screw). It catches against the gear mechanism (these screws are quite long). I have tried putting it in all the gears to check which one will give it the clearance but I have failed. How do I remove it? Thank you
Hi need some advice The starter motor on my golf caught fire and has burnt the wiring around it can you point me in the right direction what the looms are called for a mk4 2003 Golf
Just been given a 2003 caddy, its been sat for about 9months and its having problems starting! I've turned it over twice so I know I can runs. But then it just dies! I turn the key and I just get a single click and another single click on release? Do you think it could be a starter motor issue or would you check other things first? Many thanks
hi.. what do you think.. is it better replace for a new?.. or some good is to fix.. i mean lubricate or what.. because mine is too noisy after start..you know what i mean.. thank anyway.
Mate what would be the cause of a slow start (+4sec) when the engine is warm after a drive or the weather is hot (higher temperatures) - The temperaturesensor or the starter motor?
disconnect the temp sensor and when the engines warm start it without letting the glow plugs heat up. if it starts right up then fuel pump. it can supposedly be fixed by a remap, the hammer mod, and the hammon mod but the cause is the fuel pump.
What is causing a slow start on a 2.0 (AEG) when the car is cold? not a weak start like the battery is going out it just takes longer to start. when it's warmed up to temp, its fine
Possible coolant temperature sensor (reading warmer than the engine actually is), so the ECM adds less fuel, because it thinks that the engine is warm.
This guy always comes up with the goods. No beating around the bush just straight to the point . 👍🏻
Good Camera Angles and focus control, the mechanic gets right to the task at hand. Much better than many videos, thanks mate!
I've used a bunch of your videos for help in the past and never actually commented or anything but thank you for being awesome at these and for helping me get my car sorted. These really are great.
its magic having a vw specialist on here ! thankyou !
Just trying to help people, thanks for supporting the channel
Very good video, without all the unnecessary commentary which makes other video clips last forever. Straight to the point with helpful tips along the way. Cheers.
I've followed quite a few of your tutorials on here and they've all helped for a lot of fixes. Just wanted to leave you feedback to say thanks!
Whenever I need to do anything on my VW Bora I always look for your vids! Thanks mate helped me through many repairs!
Quick video straight to the point. Great for someone getting into cars for sure you earned a sub
Thank you, I appreiate that

I would think that using a 6 inch extension and possibly a swivel socket or even a regular socket would allow you to keep from going under the car
If I remember I did use a swivel socket.

Thanks for the videos, fixed half my car using them!
Cheers fella

I've been watching your videos for a while. I appreciate your succinct & straightforward approach (to both car repair and to video editing).
It’s always your vids that get me out of the shit. Delivery driver, working tomorrow. Starter dies at midday, now it is fixed. Ta
never have left a comment before, but thanks for the uploads. you have bailed me out on suspension, axles jobs etc. I appreciate it!
That was by far the best vid I’ve seen, something white slid under the car would make it even clearer for filming. Thankyou. I’m off to buy a starter.
Glad it helped
Injoyed video, showed what needs doing to remove starter with not a lot of crap that needs left unsaid. Other how to video makers should take note Thanks
Another 1 of your videos saving me 100s in labour.. cheers man
Great to hear!
You are the man dude!!! starter just went - now I can swap it out myself!!! Thanks dude!

Skoda Octavia rider diesel 1.9tdi ALH
Is it OK to repair or replace?
My car has stopped cranking so I'm hoping this is the fix. Great vid as always
This made it look so easy. Done a few on old fiat/lancia years ago but this put my mind ease to do now.
Yeah right. Try this on a 15 year old starter that's seen winter here in Canada. You made it seem so easy. Mine is totaly seized.

That engine bay is immaculate.
Thanks for the video, was just trying to make sure I don't take apart more stuff than I need to.
This video really helped me and I don't know anything about cars. Legend mate
Thank you for watching
Love this guy. Got excited as soon as I seen the intro

Your videos are VWery much appreciated! It helps me alot. Thanks a bunch 👊🏻✌🏻
Superb job sir, I have learnt a lot of time saving methods of doing things your way👍🏻
Any chance you can do a vid on combating the squealing noise for the starter motor?
It may be a black cable, but it is connected to the battery positive terminal (not "negative terminal").
Good walkthrough though!
Great video mate, made it easy to follow.
Sooper video but one request which spaner removing time using pls tell &show.. All the best dear....
Good video but here

Duly noted. Thank you for watching
Thanks Bro. This was great and helped me 👍👍

it was great and simple to follow but what is the actual socket size to remove the final two bolts? I've been out and bought the wrong ones
Souu Brasileiro e adoro seus videos msm nao entendendo muito hehe.

good video to the point and simple
Hey that black cable to the starter solenoid is not negative it goes to the battery positive see the battery terminal wire
Excellent as usual!
Brilliant video mate.
The bolts for the starter are 18mm and you will need an extended socket. Otherwise great video.
Is it the same process on a VW polo 02 plate. Because the car makes a screetching noise when it's started. VW forums say it has something to do with the starter motor needing lube. Great vid by the way
Good work man, keep it up!!!
Thank you, i was puzzled how to get the solenoid wire off, its a clip.
Thanks very much, really useful.

apart from the placement of the battery tray and air box, how different is this to the mk5 golf
what is the spec to replace the nuts?
I have a 2006 VW Polo. I am almost done removing the starter (all the bolts are loose) but I am struggling with the top bolt (screw). It catches against the gear mechanism (these screws are quite long). I have tried putting it in all the gears to check which one will give it the clearance but I have failed. How do I remove it? Great video. Thank you.
Is there anything else attached to the starter motor power wire that is connected permanently to the battery terminal?
Hi need some advice The starter motor on my golf caught fire and has burnt the wiring around it can you point me in the right direction what the looms are called for a mk4 2003 Golf

thnx for the "how to do" well done!
Question, is that the similar steps for the base model mk 6 2010 golf
It really depends on your engine, but in general they are mostly the same.
Awesome video.
hi.. what do you think.. is it better replace for a new?.. or some good is to fix.. i mean lubricate or what.. because mine is too noisy after start..you know what i mean.. thank anyway.
Róbert Uličný just grease the gears inside of starter and that will be fine
Its a 18 instead of 16, sometimes it can be stuck as hell to. Be sure to use a proper tool
Yep. Cannot get the bottom one of mine off. 18mm as well
Mine too 😢😢😢
hiya mate, wanted to ask you if a starter motor from a DSG golf would be the same as a manual golfs? thank you.
Is that same like in passat 2.0petrol 2002 ?
Mate what would be the cause of a slow start (+4sec) when the engine is warm after a drive or the weather is hot (higher temperatures)
- The temperaturesensor or the starter motor?

thanks man, definitely noted. if i get a CEL i guess that's the first thing i'll check ;)
Will not set a cel unless the temperature reading it sends to the ECM is outside the normal range.
this is very constructive, thanks much mate
Thomas always has good advice, cheers mate.
BMAC VAGS Is the starter motor in the same place for the petrol engine MK4s?
pretty much
Is it the same for getting a vw polo 1.0lt out on 2000
anyone know the part number for the starter motor earth cable? mine snapped 😑
you can make one if you are stuck
@@BMACVAGS literally just did that 🤣 used 4Ga amp wire and crimped on the washer connector bits

Is this same as a vw passat 1.9 tdi 2006?
Is 2006 caddy 2l the same
Thanks man 👍
Thanks for this video

Did you say you did this WITHOUT raising the car?
Dave Ireland Yes you can reach underneath and remove it.
Thanks so much. I'm tackling this job this evening
