      I'm a bit confused by your questions, yes the caddy is what you need to plug into that port. You can use the whole caddy I just chose to not to. The internal 32gb emmc storage is soldered to the system board and is not "replaceable" you are just adding a different drive and can use that to boot vs the emmc storage. and no, you do not have to re buy windows. the license key is built into your system board, and after your first or second reboot, if you're connected to the internet the system with activate automatically. and lastly, no, you cannot upgrade the CPU, again it is soldered to the system board. and even if you had all the skills required to upgrade, any compatible cpu would be of similar class, or in other words, also slow.
      If you are really stepping up to that next level of system, if you save a few more bucks, I would just buy a used business class laptop, like this one:
      rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=5575128025&toolid=10001&campid=5337706877&customid=&mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2FLenovo-Thinkpad-T450-Intel-Core-i5-5300U-2-3GHz-8GB-RAM-256GB-SSD-Win-10-Pro%2F324106703185
      For $160 + shipping, you get a core i5, 256gig SSD, 8 gigs of ram and a 1600x900 screen. Or for a few bucks more this zbook 14 G2:
      rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=5575128025&toolid=10001&campid=5337706877&customid=&mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2FHP-ZBook-14-G2-Workstation-Core-i5-5200U-2-2GHz-256GB-8GB-14-1600x900-Win-10%2F164120585527
      I love the zbook line a lot.

    Thanks for the help. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to get the back off until I watched your video. Turned the notebook with a 32gb EMMC into a full on laptop with 250gb SSD and 12gb of ram. Used AOMEI Partition Assistant to port the Windows 10 OS over to the SSD. Unplugged the EMMC and it booted from the SSD.

    Thanks for the video. I successfully upgraded my HP 14-an013nr. I ordered an Aireye ssd and installed it with what appears to be the same caddy you bought but, I actually used the caddy because it lined up perfectly to plug in and when I installed the backing or bottom, it seemed to actually lock in the caddy so it can't move. The software work was tricky as I first used MiniTool/Partician Wizard with limited success then after reformatting the drive, I retried with Macrium. That worked really well. For now, i disabled the drive in Computer Manager / Device Management because I could not find that option in the BIOS. Maybe later I'll activate the drive and use it but for now, it will remain unused and ready the operating system in case of emergency. Because of your video and another's, I was able to do this upgrade. THANK YOU!!!

    I do not want to change the boot drive/OS to the ssd.

    After hardware installation, do I just need to format the ssd from windows explorer?

      Installed successfully! And I migrated the OS to SSD no problem. Well, one problem, I didn't increase the primary partition size on my first attempt so it was 28g used/0avail and 200g+ unallocated.
      Question about the caddy. when I removed the adapter from the optical dock, there is a loose cord that is connected to the adapter. Is it safe to remove this? I just taped it to the SSD for now.

  • @charleshines8523
    @charleshines8523 ปีที่แล้ว

    I installed one of those adapters in a laptop once. You need the bracket from the back of the optical drive or another one. Pay attention to how it is on there for less frustration. Also that screw that holds it on is tiny so watch that you don't lose it. If it is like the one I had on mine that screw is really short so threading it in may seem a little tricky. You can use the front bezel from the optical drive if you don't want a gap there. It is ugly and it may seem out of place.

    Amazon will not send the laptop to Australia and buying it from the local HP web site is more expensive than currency conversion + taxes so ... it's annoying. The laptop looks good for a low-powered pc. It would pair well with a good desktop to provide portability while the desktop does the serious work.

    ...well, I couldn't get the cloning to work so I opted for a clean install on the new SSD, removed all the partitions off the 32GB internal during the Windows 10 setup and now in Windows I don't even see the 32GB (which is how I want it). Key here is that you need Windows 10 media and I'd STRONGLY recommend using the recovery tools on the built-in OS so that you have a way to get everything back to factory should you want to do that. For me, I used the reflect software to create the cloned partitions but my problem was that I could never get the BIOS to accept my new SSD as the primary boot drive. The other thing is with the reflect free cloning tool - it doesn't give you the option to extend the 29GB C;\ partition out to use whatever free space is left on your drive so you need another tool after you get windows moved to the new disk to do that. So, I have access to a windows 10 Home ISO so I created a bootable USB key out of that and then just did a new install and went from there. It's the 1607 build (latest at this time) so the good news was after manually running a windows update all the video/audio drivers were installed and everything works like a champ. I did a video as well - you can find it here. Thanks AIC for getting me started...good video: th-cam.com/video/kdeSMD1jwkM/w-d-xo.html

  • @KenLince
    @KenLince 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    couple questions...I installed a new SSD (doesn't see it in the BIOS initially until I use a disk cloning app) but when I re-enter the BIOS and try to select the new drive as the boot device clicking 'enter' does nothing - as in - doesn't let me select that device. I'm also unable to use a USB key to just do a clean install - I move the USB to the top of the boot order and it just skips it and moves to booting to the internal 32GB. Anyone have any more details on how the got past that step?

    • @AICvideo
      @AICvideo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      after you installed the drive, did you initialize it in storage management in windows? I don't think the bios will recognize it as a boot drive until windows is actually installed on it. as far as booting from the USB, you should be able to from windows go into settings and reset the computer and choose advanced boot options and boot from USB.

    • @KenLince
      @KenLince 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes - used the reflect software to clone all the partitions to the new drive then rebooted and tried switching to the new SSD. It showed up in the list but wouldn't 'select' when I'd hit return. I guess I'm just going to do a fresh install to the SSD and just go from there.

    I wonder if anyone else has run into this problem. I kept the 32gig eMMC installed and added a 128gb ssd. The machine doesn’t boot properly anymore. Prior to the update 1709 attempts, the boot screen would show volume 3 and volume 6. I would simply select volume 6 (ssd) and it would boot fine. Now the auto update runs (doesn’t successfully install 1709) and when it boots, I see a blue recovery screen with options. Yes, I could remove the eMMC card and boot from the ssd but wonder if this can be solved with bcdedit. I tried bootfix to no avail. I can get past the recovery screen by hitting F1 and enter or esc and enter, and it boots into windows.
    Update: i just went into the bios and under boot options, only sees the 32gb drive, no ssd. But when I boot windows, the OS boots into ssd (C drive) and it sees the 32gb as the D drive. Boy something’s horked up. I might need to do a clean install.

    I was looking at an upgraded version of this laptop for a couple weeks for my parents. I had been planning to do the 8GB RAM thing with 1 stick of 4GB but Windows 10 is bad about RAM usage. Is the 16 GB build recommended over 8GBs? At some point the AMD processor will be the bottleneck.
    I'm appreciating the SSD and the carrier card links. That looks like a great deal for local storage. I'm going with a NAS for bulk storage.
    But all of this will bump it into the 330 range. I'm wondering if that is worth it. With 8GBs of RAM it's only ~$270 range.

    • @AICvideo
      @AICvideo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but you still get a performance boost by going from 4 gigs to 8 gigs. At least I sure noticed a difference in performance. but its confirmed by cpuz that it is single channel regardless of the number of dimm slots used.

    • @johnnyappleseed5476
      @johnnyappleseed5476 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for quick reply, so if I throw another 4gb of ram in there it doesn't recognize it as having 8gb but it's not just sitting there being unused? Another guy took out his 4gb completely and just put an 8gb in. Thanks for info

    • @AICvideo
      @AICvideo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course it recognizes it. dual channel vs single channel is the speed at which the memory runs. if you have two memory dimms installed that are exactly the same (same speed, size, etc) the memory can run a little faster. that's all dual channel does for you. this computer really isn't fast enough to take advantage of that anyways. I had 2x8 sticks (16gb total) and it recognized all of that memory, but it wasn't any faster with 16 vs 8 gigs, so I have just 8 gigs in it.

Keep booting from the 32 or install windows 10 all over to the new SSD? I would love to make things as simple as possible. Thanks.

    • @AICvideo
      @AICvideo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally? I would clone the emmc drive over to the SSD (then expand the storage) and format the emmc storage. The new SSD will be twice as fast as the emmc, and you won't have to deal with windows 10 not upgrading. Personally I always go for a clean install, but if you have stuff already installed and configured, a clone gets you set up quickly.

      @@AICvideo Thanks for the response. Is making a bootable usb drive the same as having a copy of windows 10 on a usb drive and if so, how big of a thumb drive should I buy in order to have an external copy of window 10 on a flash drive? I guess the reason I wanted to keep the 32gb active, would be as a way to keep a copy of windows 10 in a partition directly on the pc. What do you suggest?

    • @AICvideo
      @AICvideo  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean, you do you. You asked what I would do. You can format the emmc and still use it as a 2nd drive. (that's what I did, put my music library on there). If you install the OS on both drives, then you have to select each time which drive you boot from, and that can get old after a while. you can use the 32 gig drive for just windows, but you'll always running into issues space wise for updates and such.
      as far as installing windows, you just need a windows bootable USB drive, if you google "windows media creation tool" you can find windows free utility to make a windows 10 bootable USB drive. You need an 8 gig drive for it. I personally carry one of these: amzn.to/2Q3IqOm It's small, metal, and the loop is perfect to go on my house keys. I made it a windows bootable drive, but also keep other folders on there with common software I install on computers, some music, videos, etc. I use it all the time.

O I did keep the Operating system on the 32 gig drive it comes with which now after updates has only about 8 gigs left and am using the 500gb to install the programs and also made it the default save drive for data.. Also I already did a windows memory test and it came back with no issues.. Any ideas..

      I have an update for you.. First of all thank you very much for your help.. Well I flashed the bios again and it seemed to still be happening so I set the bios to its defaults which I never modified I figured it adjusted memory and the hard drive by itself as all new computers do.. And that seems to have fixed the problem.. I have shutdown and restarted over 10 times and it has not given me any errors which before it would give it to me 95% of the time.. I also went ahead and did a windows repair and it did its thing.. But it seems like defaulting the bios fixed the problem like you said I have no idea why but it did.. I cant thank you enough..

      I have never personally had this issue, so I cannot say for sure what the issue will be. but I googled it, and yeah, I would remove the storage drive and memory that you added. That error shows up as a driver issue, or a bad piece of hardware issue.

    Quick question, with the second hard drive, can I install windows on it and have the computer boot to the second hard drive and bypass the 32gig all together? thanks

    • @AICvideo

      Yup, that's what I did. I just installed a fresh copy of windows from USB to the SSD, and deleted the drive on 32 gig drive, and then set the ssd as the boot device in windows

      The largest I tried was an 8 gig dimm (x2), since I don't have a 16 gig dimm. so I cannot say either way. If you had a 16 gig dimm laying around you can try it, but I wouldn't spend the extra money on it. I felt no performance difference between 8 and 16 gigs.

    I installed a new SSD (opened the PC and connected it) but it isn't recognized in the Disk Management or Marium Reflect. (I couldn't figure out how to check to if BIOS recognized it.) I checked and all drivers are up to date. Did you have to do anything to get the PC to recognize the new drive? If not, do you have any idea as to what I might be able to do? Thank you in advance. Your video is really helpful.

      @@AICvideo , another question about the ram memory. Since you said it runs only on single mode, there's no way to increase it at all? Is the card that comes with the computer fixed or can I remove it and use another one with more capacity?

    • @AICvideo
      @AICvideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      single channel mode vs dual (or quad channel) only means that if your CPU supports it, you will get slightly faster speeds in certain workloads if you have matching memory in the correct slots. and it has nothing to do with how much memory you can upgrade the system with. This system has two slots, you can load it up with 32 gigs of ram, but if you want just 8 gigs you will get the same performance if you have 2 dimms of 4gigs or 1 dimm of 8 gigs

    This is going to sound like a dumb question, but as a noob. Here it goes. If I was able to clone my 32gb hard drive which was built in to the syatem, wouldnt windows 10 be already installed on the clone or do I have to reinstall it again? I watched your bios video on this laptop and matched everything, but for some reason when I boot from the ssd It keeps taking me to computer repair screen and simply will not boot up to windows. The worst part is that already formatted the 32gb internal emmc memory😞 All I keep getting is automatic repair screen on start up. Other than the SSD all I installed was an extra 4gb ram card in the upper slot which bumped me up to 8gb ram. Any help would be appreciated🙏
