  • In these series I am going through all the steps that I went through, to eventually be able to do a powerslide.
    In this first episode, I go over all common ways to brake on inline skates, and discuss what motivated me to focus most of my first year of skating on learning the powerslide, and keep pushing through, even though it seemed near on impossible, for most of that entire period.

    Hello Inline Pilot. I found your channel while searching help to learn the powerslide. I'm 41 and started skating 6 weeks ago. In all other videos it looked so easy and I wondered why I'm not able to do this. Now I feel much better because you talked about how long it can take to master a method. Nobody else tells you about the time needed to learn something. Thanks for sharing your experience. And nice to have found another person learning skating in the 40s. Greets from Germany

      Hi Niels, awesome you started skating recently in your 40s. Hope you keep enjoying the learning process. It's very rewarding to see you can learn skills and get better at them. But getting to a level at which to skate confidently takes time, counted more in years than in weeks... Especially to get comfortable with the city environment. But if you keep it up, you can reach most of the goals you set for yourself, if not all.

    Great video. I'm still trying to learn the soul slide, but the powerslide is my favorite and I agree that it is one of the safest and easiest to use for the body.

    You got some good understanding of skating and made exceptional progress 😲👏🏻
    I can think of three more methods... Rolling into grass is pretty effective if there is some 😅
    At slower speeds just spin 😜 either by putting your back foot in an angle almost like drag stop but you let it turn you. Or go inside edges and point one foot inwards, this even works at medium speed, if you lose to much grip you can always turn it into powerslide... There are many ways to spin and it's cool because not many do it to stop 😁
    And then there's the acid slide, not very useful but so stylish if you make it look easy...
    And the ultimate emergency break for stupids like me: ninja slide... Start parallel slide, go low and slide with the whole body on the ground 🤣 I only used it once but it saved me from crashing into a parked car at 40 km/h and I wasn't even hurt except very minor bruises...

      Thank you Eric, I didn’t think about spins indeed, thanks for mentioning. I’m mostly worried about situations where there might be traffic next to me, so I kind of excluded turns snd spins as a way to stop. But they can be really effective if space allows. Glad you didn’t get much injured in your ninja slide. I tried something similar why trying out the max speed at which could jump into a powerslide. Put my weight further back than my rolling foot, and landed on my elbows one elbow pad didn’t stay in place so lost some skin there. Luckily it was indoors on a smooth floor.

    i saw another video where a hill skater is able to stop doing the soul slide by making the back skate also perpendicular to the direction she was traveling in. i havent skated in years but im about to get me some skates and start skating again. i used to do the power slide. but been some years so im gonna start off slow

      @qjames2405 great to hear you're getting back at skating again! The stop you describe sounds like the Magic Slide. In the video I show from @FlowSkate at 12:50 he also starts with a very wide Soul Slide, and then eventually transitions into the Magic Slide by turning his back skate perpendicular.

    I attempted the power slide a few days ago but I keep ‘sticking’ to the pavement. I reckon it’s because my wheels are new

    • @InlinePilot
      @InlinePilot  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      New wheels indeed need some roughening-up to slide better. As long as you can drop low enough, they will slide too. But in the beginning that's difficult, first of all, due to not being comfortable enough to bend the knee further. But secondly, I needed a lot of muscle strengthening to get and stay in a deeply bent knee position while sliding.
      Therefore, I train mostly on the smooth, dusty floor of a parking garage. There I hardly have any wheel wear, too, which means endless repetitions.

      It is very easy to slide after a rain.

  • @cyy3793

    Braking with heel brakes is better than any other way, because it is safe and predictable, and also very much cheaper to replace that piece of rubber or plastic, than to replace all your wheels.

    • @InlinePilot
      @InlinePilot  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've also started to try out heel brakes now. They have some important advantages, such as not getting stuck on an edge of an uneven pavement tile. Seems much safer indeed.

      @@InlinePilot only lacking the cool factor, haha. I am 60 years old, I just enjoy skating and, i dont need to look cool anyway. One more thing, you have to be mindful of them when doing crossovers.

      @scottingalls8460 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You need a long runway to heel brake.

    • @InlinePilot
      @InlinePilot  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@scottingalls8460 Not all heel brakes are equally effective. I've been able to get some good braking power. But it depends on the material, the distance from the ground, your braking technique and also the length of the skate. It's much easier to put a lot of weight on the brake on short skates than on long speed skates.

      riding backwards with a heel brake is a big no no though
