  • Mika Mäkeläinen is a radio enthusiast who listens to stations from around the world in a remote corner of Lapland, 400km north of the Arctic Circle.

He and a group of fellow hobbyists have set up 14 wire antennas in the forest to capture weak signals from low-power stations, thousands of kilometres away. Mika explains why Lapland is a perfect place for listening to distant radio stations and how his hobby continues to inspire him 40 years after first discovering it as a child.

Amazing place and it’s amazing just how clear those distant stations come in from far away you could never get that many and that clear in Florida makes me green with envy I hope to visit one day !

Wonderful! Must be cold as anything but that light is amazing, such crisp and clear air.
As you said, no electronic noise is a paradise for any DXer 👍

I also live in an urban area without any decent antennas. That is why I would recommend DXpeditions to everyone. If you can't find a good place in your own country, you could always come to Aihkiniemi.

I would enjoy visiting that site for a couple weeks. I wonder what equipment he is using, beyond the antennas and matching transformers?
