I don't think anyone is inherently good or bad... Diane from Bojack horseman summed it up really well in the show where she says "we're the choices we make" and sometimes you do "good" and "bad" whether on purpose or not. Like Bob said I see people do shitty things and think "I would never do that" then think and realize I absolutely have before. @@simularfreak9232 well, we could go into this topic… What you are doing is called a red herring argument, but we can indulge your argument. From the stand point that most everyone has, yes Hitler did a lot of bad things. He enforced the murder of thousands of people. However, he is one of the first government officials to create animal right regulations in Germany, 1933. He loved animals, painted, and supported his family. However, the wrongs he did out weighs the good he did. This was a discussion in my philosophy class a few years back. Basically, yes Hitler did a LOT of really really horrible, terrible things. However. How many Hitlers has there been in history? How many people have done that much destruction compared to how many people have done good in the world that has gained enough traction to be news worthy? There are a lot of people who have done horrible things, and there are a lot more people who have done good. There are a lot more scientists, doctors, and others who have done good in this world than Hitlers in the world. I don’t know if that helps, hope it does

I had a spychiatrist friend summarize this once for me: You have two instincts or voices in your head. The first one you hear is the one society teaches you to respond with (hearing that nasty insult or that morbid thought or maybe even a positive take depending on your influneces), and the second voice you hear, the knee jerk reaction immediately after that, that's you. She said this to me, because I worried I could hear my dad insulting overweight people or different races in my head and I worried... was that me? And she asked me "what's the second voice sound like?" I said "She's hurt and immediately says, not that's NOT ok, be nice and don't take things out on people and make up reasons to hate." And she smiled at me and said "You're voice is much kinder than your dad's." I about cried. And to this day I hear her now in my mind as well, and it brings me such comfort and joy. I am forever grateful for our talk that day.

    • @Lucifronz

I think we all want to believe we're the second voice, but just having that first presence, as I know I do, makes it hard to. It makes you feel like you're pretending. That you're playing at being a good person.
But you know what? Even if that were true, that's a step above what some people in your life have done. You at least think about your horrible thoughts, react to them, and then say "that's not okay" and that's important.
I say that, though, and I still consider myself a shitty person for the immediate thoughts. It terrifies me that someone I care about could possibly know about that asswipe first voice and how they might react.

I know this podcast is a little old at the moment but this one really had me thinking and I think I understand Bob. You believe that what you've done is wrong because if it happened to you, you would think it's bad. I've had this thought process before and it makes things really difficult on your perspective of yourself. However, what Wade says is also very valid on intent. If your intention was malicious then it is bad. However, if your intention was good but something bad came from it, then it was a mistake. An unfortunate mistake which can be really harmful but your intent was not to do so. So long as you don't mean to cause harm, I believe that you are not bad. We mess up, things happen and sometimes we just don't understand stuff which I have seen in many people which is why I try to be open minded which is really really hard and you can't be that way all the time. It is really hard but I believe that there is more conscious good rather than conscious bad

I wouldn't say we'd be the first to create our own extinction. Have you heard of the Great Oxygenation Event? It's when the very first photosynthesizers appeared and began filling Earth's atmosphere with oxygen for the first time, which set off a huge chain of events that ended up killing most of life on Earth, including the ones who created these events in the first place. However, because of them, Earth became what it is today and now most of life on Earth depends on this oxygen. Similarly, when an animal reaches a new area it sometimes outcompetes the native wildlife, and sometimes can even eat too much and cause its own destruction by throwing off the balance of the ecosystem. In our history, this has often been our fault, but before we existed, things like this happened too. Humans like to think we're unique, and maybe we are in some ways, but if anything exists on a large enough scale, it can have grand consequences and change the environment, and since many organisms are adapted to a specific environment, this can deadly in many cases. We're one of the lucky species that is pretty generalized and so we can survive in many different types of environments. However, if anything, it kind of proves that we're just like every other animal if even we, with all our unique abilities, are not able to prevent our own destruction.

If you've ever flown, you probably know that in an emergency you're instructed to secure your mask before helping anyone else- children included. That's because if you end up passing out due to lack of oxygen, both you AND the person you were going to help are in significantly more danger. The greatest chance of survival for the most people in any given situation lies in everyone saving themselves FIRST, and then doing what they can for others.
Creatures are wired in a way that prioritizes survival for the species as a whole. We have a baseline want to help everyone else, but in situations where we're nervous at all, our first instinct is normally to forget everyone else and do what we need for ourselves for this exact reason. Wade's right, we haven't really evolved past everything being life or death, but selfish instinct to some degree isn't bad and it's actually better for humanity if we're speaking broadly. It's just got to be in moderation, like everything else.

Personally I think most people have the capacity and the desire to do good things, but at the same time it's very easy to get lost in day to day life, thinking about what you're going to eat or something that happened at work or just dealing with your own mind everyday its easy to forget things and make a mistake, cut someone off or get in the wrong lane or accidentally ignore someone. does that make you a bad person? I don't believe that it does, I think about the actions of others a lot and its easy to forget that everyone is just trying to make it through their own problems, you don't have to be an angel 100% of the time to be a good person. However that does not mean there are no bad people, but its not so cut and dry. People can be assholes sometimes but be a good person, and people can be thoughtful and be a bad person. I think that one argument that I seldom seeing in this debate, especially with topics that talk about something like "which animals which are better will replace humans when we die" is the fact that no animals are better than humans. The reason humans are even able to come up with being mean to others, being just overall the worst in humanity and having these cognitive thoughts that are just bad for everybody else is the fact that the only reason we came up with these things in the first place is *because* of our intelligence and our ability to grow a self-esteem and perceive the world around us. The moment the next animal comes up with an intelligence to match humans and take over the planet as bipedal beings they will almost certainly be the same as us because that is inherent in all living beings. We've always had the mindset for millions of years this hierarchy, an "alpha" male and "the weak die" mentality but only when we become intelligent do these thoughts become a reality and things we actually think about. Before that they are just instinctual, "oh I lost to another one of my species because I wasn't strong enough" and that's normal because that's the way the natural life is. Animals live to breathe, reproduce, then die, and most of the time they are selfish and only look out for themselves because their instincts tell them to survive no matter what. Once you insert a subconscious and intelligence into the equation that's when things change. Our selfish animal instincts become subdued but our intelligent minds make them a more subtler yet more intense reality, and that's the interesting thing to think about

I'd have to disagree. I believe that there are creatures out there that, if they were to become as intelligent as humans would build a much better society than humans. Woah, what are you saying "No animals are better than humans" where in that entire sentence did I mention anything about humans being *better* than animals? What I'm trying to say is that *humans are and always were equal to animals*. The thing that makes humans different and arguably more despicable is our cognitive minds and our ability to make our selfish tendencies into a reality. Maybe I have yet to clarify, but during my original comment I was thinking more along the line of "wild animals". Obviously, animals domesticated by humans are on a completely different level from wild animals, and humans have grown to love some if not most of these domesticated animals as our companions or our friends. I admit, the statement of "no animals are better than humans" may be bit stretching it, but I still stand by the notion that most animals are selfish because that's what biology dictates their evolution to be, to survive and to thrive *no matter what*.
Also, please don't assume my personality. "You're probably one of those guys that say animals don't have souls or emotions", that's just very rude and completely unnecessary. I have a dog, so that statement is frankly appalling to me.

People are all bad. We're born being tempted to do the wrong things. It takes being taught to learn how to do good, and it's something people have to strive for their whole life. It's also something that you WILL fail at sometimes because no one is perfect. For anyone wondering, this is what the majority of Christians believe. If you think we think we're better, we don't, we just work very hard at trying to be better because we KNOW how awful people are.
Also, to Bob's point towards the end, I do try to live my life being compassionate towards others. When someone tailgates me I worry about whether they're trying to get to a hospital. When a cashier is rude I wonder if they're having a bad day. And yeah, your immediate reaction is often "what a jerk" but I try to keep things in perspective. I received training for a job at a pharmacy that helped with that. It showed various people interacting and for example one person would have the text "dhe just found out she's pregnant" and the other would say "she just had a miscarriage." We encountered a lot of sick people or relatives of sick people in the pharmacy so we were heavily trained to not react to them being rude to us because the BEST case scenario was they were coming to do an annoying errand.

When it comes to morality, you are the only one holding yourself up to scrutiny. You set the standards, most of the time your the only witness to whatever choise you made. If you find your actions inexcusable and are unable to live with them then yes, you are 'bad', by your own standards. The point is to change as you notice these discrepancies

    I’m amazed, honestly.
I thought it was rare that some were in the small percentages of people in the world that disliked humanity as a whole.
I for one, from a realistic standpoint, hate humanity. I never thought Bob would have that similar of a standpoint I have, at all.
I’m not saying that I deserve the Earth or I’m better in any way, cause I do those bad things too, in a daily life scenario.
Humans, as an entire species, do not deserve the Earth.
I’ve been saying humans are a cancer to this Earth we live on since I was 14 years of age. Meaning, for 14 to 15 years, I have felt humans do not deserve the Earth, the sentience or the abilities, as livings things, we have been given.
We just don’t, we don’t deserve none of it.
Keep in mind- I’m not speaking from a religious standpoint. I’m not religious in the slightest, mind you. I believe in the science behind things. (The religion Scientology, is fucking stupid; just to be clear.)
Edit: But I digress, I’m no one to be determining what’s deserved and not deserved by any species. This is just my opinion.

these kinds of topics are always so interesting because it shows just how complicated and multi-faced morality can be. not only are there so many individual variations of good and bad, there's also the grey areas and the personal experiences of each person that shape their own mindset. someone's "horrible" and be another person's "pretty great", and they are both true to each person. then we judge other's based on our own version of the correct morality. but objectively, no one can ever truly say whether something is good or bad since everyone has their own definitions. it's all so fascinating!

I think this episode is interesting because it touches on a lot of not just philosophy, but also biopsychology. A lot of what Bob was talking about with seeing the rude things people do, thinking "I would never do that," then realizing he does do those things sometimes IS a psychological thing. It's a big part of Attribution Theory, where we tend to attribute someone else doing something rude to their personality ("wow, they cut someone off in traffic, they must be a jerk!") vs attributing us doing the same thing to the situation ("I'm running late, I HAD to cut that person off!"). This specifically relates to the Fundamental Attribution Error and Actor-Observer Bias respectively. What Bob was explaining was just him becoming aware of Attribution Theory. It's something deeply rooted in our psychology that makes us act and think this way. Of course, there's many other psychological aspects to this as well, but that was a prominent one.
I consider myself to be a rational optimist. I like to see the good in people and humanity, but I know when to recognize the bad, the shortcomings, etc. No one person is born inherently good or bad, morality is something we develop over time (biopsychologically, there IS a part of our brain in the frontal lobe that is attributed to morality), but I'll say this: humanity HAS to be somewhat good. Homo spaiens truly could not have evolved and survived to be where we are today WITHOUT some empathy and compassion. We have always been social animals. We were never built to survive on our own pre-civilization. We've always HAD to live and work in groups. So I can understand the lack of faith in humanity, because there's a lot that we believe to be bad/wrong/immoral/harmful to ourselves and the rest of the biosphere. But it's important to remember that we could not have gotten here at all if humanity was truly all bad or even mostly bad. To exist as we are, we need enough good in our species to outweigh the bad in order for the species to continue living. And this is where I'll agree with Mark that we WILL cause our own extinction if we get to the point where the bad outweighs the good.
This is not meant to discount a philosophical perspective at all, but rather add some scientific philosophy to this conversation.

I relate to Bob so much in this, and not only in the way that my name is also bob, but I do do selfish things and I am also concerned with what people think about me. The context of selfish actions is also extremely important, because literally everyone will do something selfish, and determining why says so much. If I told my ex to go F**k herself, I sound like an ass don't I? But if I tell you they were toxic, impulsive, and frustrating, it can change how you see my statement. Context is everything, and I think Bob is a great person with realistic limits and ideas.

If someone cuts me off in traffic, most of the time I choose to believe that they actually DO need to get somewhere faster than me. They might be rushing home to a child that is injured or something. That isn't THEIR responsibility, for what you choose to believe, that is on you. If they have valid reason then they aren't bad people, and if you recognize that it could be the case that they have valid reason....you aren't either.

14:11 Well, in space, if we're being serious, even if we did turn the rockets off the earth would keep moving slowly out to space. Because there is no air resistance in space and, by Newton's first law, objects in motion stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.
Or the earth just gets pulled back to its orbit by the sun, if the momentum wasn't enough. 🤷‍♀️

This reminds me of the "10-80-10" rule. If you took 100 random people, 10 are probably in a place in their life, through struggles, that they lash out as a form of defense mechanism. These people will harm you. It could manifest from their character (people who commit crimes) or from their environment (people who cut you off because they're in a rush). On the other end of the spectrum are the 10 people who actually have a life of abundance. These are the people that pull over on the side of the road to help you change that tire or the multitude of wealthy people who fund, operate and donate to charities. The 80% in the middle are the everyday everybody that most of us reside in. Sometimes you're the 80 sometimes you're the lower 10 or the upper 10, it depends on MANY factors in your life.
The challenge comes from the concept of "sunsets and car accidents." Traffic slows down to a stop with everyone who wants to gawk at a car accident but traffic doesn't stop to see the beauty of a sunset. Media takes this by taking the bottom 10 of people and parading them through news outlets. And truth be told it is only the small portion of that 10. 1% of 1% commit crimes; 1% of 1% are racist; 1% of 1% abuse their power; however, that minute minority make it on the news making the entire group wrongly accountable.
I believe most people are good

On the top of the baby is it's very weird because I remember reading something that explains why it's so difficult nowadays and yes there is an upper limit but GMOs studies have shown that they make babies bigger and combined with an improper birth position because the laying on your back which if I remember correctly King Louie the 8th was the one who instilled that idea because he wanted to watch(he just liked watching that's all) the natural position is either on all fours or squatting it helps you dilate more people are trying to get back to the natural Way that actually works but Western medicine seems to resist that idea even though there is actual proof to the data...

As someone raised by a narcissistic family, you can end up on the severe other side of the spectrum. Everything I do, anything I think about I'm considering everyone around me before myself. There are a few boundaries I've learned to put up recently, at least here at home, but overall I'm almost entirely thinking about what I'm doing and how it impacts everyone around me. Though honestly it's exhausting, there is no automatic actions it's always a hyper awareness of everyone around me and how things might make them react or impact them. You end up raised with you care about someone else before you care about yourself, and that ended up translating into everything being about everyone else. It's things like oh if I miss a turn, I would rather go around the block or find an alternate path instead of potentially cutting someone off or inconveniencing them. If I might end up inconveniencing someone by crossing a road at a certain spot, I'll choose to go another block before I cross even if it makes the walk longer. Stuff like that. I do very much dislike humans in general, but my first thought if someone does something rude (unless it's specifically obviously rude) I just assume they were struggling in some way or didn't notice or misunderstood something.

Galadriel: Mithrandir, why the Halfling? Gandalf: I do not know. Saruman believes that it is only great power that can hold evil in check. But that it is not what I’ve found. I’ve found it is the small things, every act of normal folk that keeps the darkness at bay - simple acts of kindness and love. Why Bilbo Baggins? Perhaps it is because I am afraid, and he gives me courage. Not direct Tolkien but gives the same sentiment.
