    I have never heard anyone go into this amount of depth on this subject. Vowel devoicing is so important and I am so happy you have made this video. Thank you so much

    I’m a fan of phonetics and I loved to finally learn why some vowels are devoiced in Japanese. It helped me a lot.

    This is one of the best Japanese phonology courses I have seen on TH-cam. And it's from a native speaker!! I'm a fluent Japanese learner and passed N1 years ago, but I still learned a lot from your content. Thank you!!!

    Thank you for the great educational videos. Trying to pronounce the words correctly is pretty difficult, especially when trying to follow pitch and dropping vowels, but that can be solved with practice. Without your videos, I would not have even known to look for it.

    Wow that's some great depth. Though having learnt Hindi and it's "Sandhi" helps me get that which vowel will be devoiced or not almost like 90% of times , though it was definitely helpful :)

    brother, I seem to hear the /ɯ/ inですね frequently devoiced and I’m not sure why, since it precedes an nasal. are there some vowels devoiced even before or after voiced consonants ?

  • @wolfthunder2526

    Thank you for this in depth explanation. I only try to mimick Japanese people whenever they speak, i don't know either the "correct" rules.
    I have a question, so basically if i have words hypothetically くつ and きつ, both have high pitch at second mora, thus both are just potentially pronounced the same? [ktsɯ]?

    What about u in ビジネス ?

  • @catlanger
    @catlanger 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi! Is there any video where you explain how to produce the devoiced u and I sound?

    • @OatmealTheCrazy
      @OatmealTheCrazy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You make the first half of the syllable slowly and stop at the point where your throat vibrates
      No need to really overcomplicate it though, just make a "Shhhhh". "chhh" "ssss" sound, etc
      Think of a librarian, someone being upset, or a snake respectively for those and shorten it

    南無 how about this word? Namu or nam(u) ?

    • @TuSevun
      @TuSevun 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      “u” is not devoiced because the “m” is a voiced consonant.

    • @cheerful_crop_circle

    I would pronounce kutsushita the exactly same way in my own language... idk why
    but I would pronounce utsukushiku as u ts ku sh ku...
    the wiktionary is not that good for pronounce, for my language it almost all the time show wrong pronunciations...
    honestly, if I could I would like to devoice all of them lol
