For Josh and Kalie being "poor" in Portugal for a month is no more than a game. They show no insight in how it would be if this were their real life situation. They maintain their habitual life-style, the popcorn, the football game, the socialising. If they really were to live on the Portuguese minimum wage, they would adapt more to a Portuguese way of life,

Exactly right - live like the natives, buy what the Portuguese do - eat what they eat, work on the social network (I've spent so many pleasurable days with Portuguese friends and family playing cards, music, talking &c. - no spending money required or desired). I'd never heard of "prazeres da mesa" before, but re-learn it well every trip.

I think the American couple’s video was mostly aimed at an American audience, not to compare wealth or lifestyles between the two countries. Many Americans are used to a culture of excess-big houses, cars, constant consumption-and the video was likely trying to show that it’s possible to live more simply by cutting unnecessary expenses. It wasn’t meant to suggest that the Portuguese way of life is inferior or that Americans are "better off." In fact, I think the couple was trying to highlight how much Americans could learn from the Portuguese approach to life, which often prioritizes community, sustainability, and simplicity over materialism.
That said, I can see how the video might come across as tone-deaf or even disrespectful, especially when it’s made by people who don’t fully understand the challenges of living on a Portuguese minimum wage. Your reaction is valid, and it’s important to call out these nuances so that people can have a more thoughtful conversation about these topics.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts-it’s always good to hear from someone with firsthand experience!

I don't think they had any intention to offend anyone and they meant well. Perhaps the way they did it could have been better. I also don't think there is a problem in portraying Americans as being "better off" because it is true that Americans (at least Americans who can afford to move to another country) have higher incomes than the Portuguese. That's just a fact. As for the "Portuguese approach to life", I don't really agree it is that different from the approach to life in any other Western country. We don't prioritize community, sustainability and simplicity over materialism. Go to any shopping center in Portugal on a Sunday afternoon and see for yourself. Take a ride in a bus and count the heads not bent over a screen. Or wait for next Christmas and take a look at the piles of paper, cardboard and plastic that came with all the unnecessary and meaningless gifts, which will be surrounding recycling containers and which will take city workers several days to gather.
Your point of view was very valid and presented several things we can all reflect on. Obrigado!

I’m American and found their video very tone deaf, not to mention utterly pointless. They weren’t offering tips to help other expats manage a lower budget or even accurately describing the Portuguese experience of living on a minimum salary. They were just complaining and trying to make it to the end of the month, as if they were on a diet that they were just doing for fun.

I enjoy your sense of humor in these videos. I use them as an aid for learning the Portuguese language and to gain insight to the Portuguese mindset. Thank you for doing them! Would love to see more in the style of poking fun of other TH-camrs.
I think those hating on the E.E. video are being overly critical. These kids were just showing us some ways their particular lives might be different on minimum wage. This is TH-cam content. It is not to be taken to be some thoroughly-researched, comprehensive examination of economic realities in Portugal. ❤

They are ridiculous. God forbid they should spend more time at home quietly, or watching a movie and having a home cooked meal. I am Portuguese and live in California. I have been so broke that after I payed all my bills I had nothing else left. Rent was the biggest expense . I'd save coins all the time. Pennies. Having a 99 cents junior whopper was our luxury meal once in a while. We'd save the coins in order to afford that. My car transmission broke and it cost almost 1k to fix, so I didn't have a car for 7 months because I didn't have enough. I had to walk everywhere. It was 8 miles to go to the video store which was also once in a while, so we could watch a movie on the weekends if we had an extra $5. I never went to parties. But we would go for lots of walks. I carried the groceries and the baby. I don't miss those days. It wasn't fun.

I just can't understand why people generalise those people from the U.S. as being crass, insensitive, ignorant and culturally blind.
This nuanced and delicate exploration of how it is to live in a smaller and relatively less well off country was, I thought, a masterstroke.
The juxtaposition of styles, levity and comedy, contrasted with the horror of public transport and the eradication of convenience, was thought provoking at a profound level.
Sympathetic and insightful analysis of what could have been, had the cards of fate fallen a different way, for this delightful couple.
No cheap jibes about custard tarts or cork handbags here, just solid and informative Pulitzer prize reporting.
What fun to know that ungodly numbers of other citizens of the U.S. will soon be heading over here, inspired by TH-cam's quality content, to continue their charm offensive and make Portugal into the country we all know it should have been.
Is that an Oscar waiting in the wings????
