B&D Lithium Battery and Drill D.O.A. -Lithium Battery Blinking Red Light Fix

  • My brother asked me to look at a couple drills he picked up from a auction for cheap. The auction house is clearing house for returns sent back from Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot, etc.... Some interesting things were found to be lacking. Not sure who is to blame, person who originally returned the drill set, or the company who originally produced it, or who knows? Enjoy and thanks for watching.

    This is the only good video that I could find to deal with Blinking red light from a single dead battery for B&D powertool. One comment: your soldering technique can create small fires...... i.e. overheating the 1865 Li-on battery. However, awesome video brother.

      I would charge individually "bad" cell before doing soldering job.Very often it helps charger to pick up right direction.

    My professor in engineering used to work at B&D in R&D. He told us a few stories about how the (electronics) engineers have to take weird shortcuts to keep sourcing costs at an absolute minimum. Basically, B&D became an ElCheapo brand ages ago, investing quite a bit in good design and marketing - but next to nothing into quality components. We have a B&D weed whacker but that's about it - sticking with Bosch & DeWalt ... great video though. I learned something from it!

      That moment you find out B&D own Dewalt and possibly Bosch definitely porter cable and craftsman 🤯

    7:10 why did you isolate the two cells ?

    Actually you don't need the security torx key, a slot key that fits will unscrew those screws

    Hello. I got the same problem with the battery. After I'd replaced a fault cell I could use it again, but I can't charge it on the original charger. The bloody red light kept blinking. Any thoughts? I guess it's something related to the electronic board inside.

      @JoshAQ  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly what caused the faulty cell caused the charger to fail, or possibly the battery is below a certain voltage threshold and the charger is refusing to charge it. I know some people have fixed it by charging the battery manually up to nominal voltage and then connecting the charger. At any rate that is my two cents. Good luck!

      @@JoshAQ the battery failed out of the charger. I used an external source to charge all cells individually. After that I got 19 volts. Even then the charger refuses to charge it.

      A chip inside declared the whole battery pack dead long ago. This shameless trick is to make it not able to be repaired/replaced and consumers are forced buy their expensive battery pack or whole new devices. This ugly trick happens to all battery powered devices(incl. BOSCH...) has become industry standard. It makes more waste although they talks about environment/global/climate care blabla. Government/EU parliament/policy makers should take serious concerns and place regulations to against these, like unified USB-C charger.

    Nice job overall. One small suggestion--for the first fix, you could have used a rag (or such) between the drill/drill's chuck and the wrenches. This would have prevented the wrenches from scratching up the drill. (I realize it's also possible that the scratches were already present.) Just something my Dad taught me.

    Awesome video brother. Respect. I just got a brand new B&D battery and that fast blinking light is still showing up. I'm assuming it's a bad charger now huh....

    Did that battery replacement work on the charger after the swap?

    • @JoshAQ
      @JoshAQ  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It did work. I asked my brother if they were still working but apparently he lost the drill at some point so I can't say it it worked long term sadly.

    I was able to remove my screws from the battery carefully without the security bit, just used the T9 driver.

    I just bought a Brand NEW B&D battery and a new charger & the new set up keeps flashing the same red light rapidly just like my old set up. WTF? what's going on ? Is my new battery & charger bad right off the Box???

    ....no Torx driver?...the security bits are not all that tightly held by the pretty orange plastic. A small [6/32?] or so flat blade screwdriver will take that T screw right out. Been there...done that. Repeatedly.

    You should really warn your viewers if you hear a pop sound or anything that sounds like air get rid of that cell fast.
    While trying to disconnect the cell like you showed in your video I did the same only the weld didn't pop loose so easily and it created a hole in the battery.

      ....yep....the wee BMS board no talky with "bad cell" since it's voltage fell too low. A quick bump with a voltage source directly to the misbehaving cell will bypass the bms momentarily and float the cell volts up high enough to be within the "passband" of the bms....and the gates will open to the charger...and all will be well. Usually...always a possibility of a turd cell, but rapping it on it's snout to wake it up is quick, easy and...free!
