In the 8 years prior to RW the Oils had almost faded to irrelevance, doing cover FFS. The Redneck Wonderland album brought them screaming back into the consciousness of the rock-going public.
@@whimsicalrichard6768 Redneck Wonderland released in 1998. Their previous two albums Earth&Sun&Moon (1993), and Breathe (1996) both sold better than Redneck. The only cover they ever did was The Real Thing, but that was in 2000, two years after Redneck.
Rage was a TV show that went all night long showing all sorts of music, often presented by different artists showcasing their music and their favorite artists.
I was traveling in Australia back in 91 and happened to attend a concert with Midnight Oil playing at a small outdoor amphitheater in Townsville. No special effects light show but this was definitely one of the best concerts I have ever seen.
Concrete is an AMAZING song and this was an oustanding performance of the Oils. Probably my favourite band of all times. They are pure energy. I hope they play again in Australia. I will travel to Australia to see them off they play again.
Peter Garret , the vocalist was parliament member and federal minister in two terms .Rob Hirst the drummer is one of the best of the planet. They were - are best in the world imho. Im 50 grown up with their music but 6000 miles away in Europe. ,Enormous respect for MO
Redneck Wonderland was the last song written for that album (and later became the title track), and the name was inspired by a piece of graffiti the band would walk past to get to the recording studio every day. It was a map of Australia with the words "Redneck Wonderland" written over it, and that's what inspired Jim Moginine to write the song.
C''mon - THAT was Awesome. And that's what Aussie pubs sounded like in the mid-80s!!! And the drummer - Rob Hirst - is the' brains of the outfit'. Pete Garrett has a law degree - but Rob is next level! He's the driver behind the band... but I also revere Pete.
Hi Guys, please do a reaction video for a great Aussie band from the nineties for me. They are called The Sharp . Some of their good songs are, "Scratch my back","Train of thought","Night club", etc . I know you will love them . Cheers
Some context behind the Redneck Wonderland album, which was definitely considered a "comeback", the Australian political landscape was pretty bleak (Pauline Hanson...) and they felt inspired to write and perform "angry" music again, which you're getting a taste of here.
Thank you so much, Jon for taking the time to pronounce the word “Aussie” as Ozzie, correctly. Much respect. Redneck Wonderland is a comment on Trump and Pauline Hanson style politics. Racist, separatist, and gun toting. The word ‘redneck’ is used to show the American style of this kind of politics.
It's probably taken over 20 years for the rest of the world to learn and appreciate
Redneck Wonderland is undoubtedly their most underrated album. It's genius.

The drums were nailed to the floor to stop them walking all over the stage LOL

Rob Hirst is one of the best drummers going around and is one of the reasons they were such a good live band.
Unfortunately, Midnight Oil played their last live concert in 2022 in Australia. The Oils began in the 1970s.
Hes not dancing he is being vibrated around by Hirsts drumming ;)
Love you guys!!

I see you have added Hunters and Collectors to the Australian list of bands. Head Above Water or We The People or slow it down with Imaginary Girl

Plenty of good bands on Recovery.
Oh how right you are. I used to get up early on a Saturday for Recovery. Dylan, Jane, The Enforcer and a very young Leigh Warnell doing movie reviews
👍
No. This is a concert. Not a TV show..
It’s a tv show called Recovery on The ABC.
TV show.
Sorry guys but you have no idea of Australian energy
