'Unbelievably wasteful' - Douglas Murray on the lunacy of the Lords

  • Douglas Murray joins Spectator TV to discuss his column on last week's peerage appointments. The House of Lords has been under scrutiny for years over hereditary peers and nepotistic appointments. Last week, Labour selected one women into the Lords at just 27 years old, another was a political staffer to Ed Miliband. Now one of the world's largest governing bodies, is it time the Lords was reformed?

Actually there may have been some merit in having the upper house occupied by landowners who trace their connection to a place back generations, as they are more likely to have a long-term vested interest in the prosperity of the country than the present elites who seem to consider themselves to be global citizens without any great loyalty to or feelings of love for the country.

was because the original HoL was

No sorry I disagree on one part, no one from parliament should ever be elevated.

I live in Queensland, Australia 🇦🇺 and Queensland doesn't have an upper house in state parliament.
We do however have a senate elected by the people for federal parliament. If you think the House of Lords is looking 'undistinguished' have a look at that lot.

Prison and struck off the honours list. Then I looked up how many people had their honours taken away, and why. It's shocking. Greedy con men, perverts and scammers. But as long as we give Doreen ( a lollipop lady for 60 years) the lowest honour there is, we all smile and pretend it's not a disgraceful seedy sham.
