    I picked up a couple Ratnik shelters before getting my plashpalatka. It looks like it's designed to do WAY more than the inside diagrams suggest. I would love to get the full Russian manual for these. Or luck across a Russian Instructor on TH-cam thoroughly going over its multiple configurations and uses. Even so, I'm impressed with them and think they are a worthy successor to the plashpalatka, though not exactly a direct feature-for-feature equivalent. I look forward to your future reviews and uses and creativity to see what discoveries and configurations you come up with.

      thanks Sean! I agree, there is definitely more under the hood so to speak than what has been hinted at. I once saw a plash palatka video with a Russian instructor walking a group of students through a myriad of uses. I was able to setup a tepee/lavvu half type setup the other day with the ratnik and close it off with a single palatka. I will try and film it in an upcoming video. It had quite a bit more space than the a frame design. I think two would be very flexible. Have a good one

      Agreed. I need to spend some time with it. I dig guy lines and not needing a ridgeline. Platsch Palatka is still best if you have a fire nearby, but I agree with you they are small. Mine is about 175*175 cm. One solution is to have them re-sewn to perhaps 225*225 cm or the rectangular shape that many covers have, 190*280 cm. Then you get the right measurements and the right fabric. I paid about $10 each when I bought mine. Today they cost about 35 dollars. The fabric also releases body moisture when used as a poncho

    Nice! I have both variants (albeit they're very similar). You do some pretty innovative shelter set ups, so I'm definitely interested in seeing how much you get out of it. One cool thing about using it as a ground sheet is that you can stuff the carry bag with debris for a makeshift pillow.
    I've ordered from Russian Cold Camo before. Their list prices are a bit high, but if you take into account the free shipping it's not too outrageous. They're very responsive to emails as well, which is a plus.

    • @EnduranceRoom

      Thanks Leen! From what I saw, it looked like the storage bag was in a different location on the earlier version that would be ideal for use as a pillow. Have you run them connected? I saw a video of a Russian instructor demoing different techniques with the plash palatka awhile back. It was pretty impressive. • @EnduranceRoom
      @EnduranceRoom  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Zak. Doing good, just been super busy these past few months. Cool that you got a ratnik shelter. I like the half tepee setup quite a bit. Another option is cutting 4 sticks, 2 shorter for propping up the A frame setup (which works really really well), and then 2 longer sticks to prop up one side in a leanto. You could use the cordage to tie it up, but having the sticks adds support and keeps it a little tighter. I have used this thing in freezing winter weather and been in huge downpour summer thunderstorms. Depending on which version you got, pockets that hold the cordage can take on a little water, so adding a little seem seal to tighten it up might be good. Cheers

      It seems to be a heavy weight ripstop type material. Probably true on both accounts. I would drag a deer with a palatka before I used the ratnik for something like that. That being said, if it is designed to be used as a stretcher, it is fairly resilient.

    Hi i wanted to ask you about the durability of the poncho? Would you prefer canvas or this Russian type. I guess I;m thinking about long term needs?

      I really like both to be honest. In 3 years, I have only needed to make one small repair from a burn hole when I used it as a ground sheet.

    Can I use it as a poncho?

      You could use it as a rain cover with a belt, but probably not ideal. Nonetheless, still a really nice shelter
