1 A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe does seek to work us woe; his craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. 2 Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God's own choosing. You ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he; Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same; and he must win the battle. 3 And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God has willed his truth to triumph through us. The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo! his doom is sure; one little word shall fell him. 4 That Word above all earthly powers no thanks to them abideth; the Spirit and the gifts are ours through him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; the body they may kill: God's truth abideth still; his kingdom is forever!
I had the privilege of portraying German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer in a production of “The Beams are Creaking”. He sings this song right before his execution. It is very emotional for him, not because of his imminent death, but because he will finally meet his Savior in eternity. This was his favorite hymn. Thank you for performing this wonderful piece. This song now has a very special place in my soul.
@@renatekelly8328 There is a book titled “Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy” by Eric Metaxas. It’s huge, but covers his entire life. Bonhoeffer also wrote his own books which are published.
This was incredible! I noticed that the organist wasn’t even facing the conductor. That’s also very impressive. I do love this ancient hymn. Absolutely beautiful!! I’m sure it was just breathtaking to hear in person. To God be the glory.❤❤❤❤
@@julietchristensen3957very good point. I remember being in choir when I was a teenager and we definitely rehearsed the music over and over again before concerts. Yet I don’t think we could have performed at the concerts without our director. Especially with starting each song. But these guys are clearly better and more advanced than my school choir and orchestra. Though we did first place in California performing arts and got to perform at Disneyland and spend the day there.😎
I love the hammer knocking metal sound, as if Martin Luther hammers his 95 theses on the door, marks the day of Christianity reformation, sweeps out the cults and false theologies, bolstering the foundations of the truth. Our God truly is the Mighty Fortress!!!!
Thank you posting. I have heard the original meter and phrasing only once before, in live performance -- nice contrast for the opening verse. Interesting and original arrangement. (Nice set of organ and human "pipes," too.)

Completely comprehend your words. The little horn. God help us it is now unraveling and take comfort in this hymn. Pray for deliverance and refuge. So many do not have eyes to see 🙏🏻
"tsar Feodore IV": "protestants" teach all you have to do say a prayer to get saved."catholics say you must get baptized but don't realize that the word baptism meant immersion. " "Orthodox" teach you get saved by immersion. Martin Luther taught what the "orthodox" taught. Germany and russia unite under me. Put me over russia. What would you do if I told you that tsar Nicholas had secret grandchildren ?
Yes, let's put a bit of poppy syncopation in "A Mighty Fortress is Our God," and make sure the conductor looks like he got his head caught in something. It's only one of the most sung Protestant hymns of all time, so it's probably best to tweak the rhythm so that no one listening will be able to sing along with it. Great job. This is only any good at all because of the song you started with. Maybe leave it as it was.
You realize the first entrance of the tune is in Luther's original rhythmic meter - what you call poppy syncopation. As Americans we've only been used to the isometric tune (all equal quarter notes).
@@maitre32 , 1. It's not just an American thing. Germans sing it the same way, just with the German lyrics. 2. It may have been a different rhythm than later became popular, but I refuse to believe Luther wrote it the way it is being shown here in the 16th Century.
Incredibly powerful, majestic hymn. Imagine the choirs in Heaven singing this praise to our Savior.
Imagine the angels reaction when Martin Luther sang this for them!
I believe my brother in heaven is hearing this great music.
I don't have the adequate adjectives to describe this ,, makes me think I am already in heaven

We performed this at our church today. I knew my brother was singing at Jesus’ throne with us

He has a page turner, and probably also is using some mirrors setup for a view of conductor. Also, they are well practiced indeed.❤

Such a wonderful, powerful hymn. Let us praise the Lord Our God now and forever.

My favorite Hymn I play it a lot in church. Excellent
Tremendous singing & practice work. Keeping people together & practice is a major managerial task. Great organ

Wow, beautiful song. God is honorable with this kind of interpretation. The view of the place is also majestic.

Quando entrei, haviam 666 curtidas. Então dei meu like pra fazerem 667 joinhas, pois essa música é muito bonita pra ser associada a esse número 😂😂
who is the organ builder?
C.B. Fisk - Gloucester, Massachusetts Opus 100
Hollywood meets Wittenberg. Somehow diminishes the hymn’s impact for me.
Far too slow and heavy and dragging
Dreadful
