  • NOTE: This video was recorded on a version of the game that is bugged, and does not play the music correctly. I was not aware of this when recording the video because this is the version I've always played on, and I just assumed this was how the game was meant to play. I will record a version with the music fixed when I have the chance.

    Myst III: Exile is the third game in the Myst series, and the first game in the series not developed by the series' creator Cyan Worlds. Instead, it was developed by Presto Studios, whose adventure game pedigree comes from their experience developing The Journeyman Project and its sequels. Unlike Riven, which told much about the backstory of the characters and introduced players to many aspects of D'ni culture, Exile essentially tells a side story, and takes place shortly after the third Myst novel, The Book of D'ni.
    While Exile is a very well-made game overall, it isn't nearly as groundbreaking as its predecessors in either its story or its gameplay mechanics. The story is completely inconsequential, ending exactly as it begins with no progress being made to the greater arc of the D'ni. The main improvement, aside from having slightly improved graphics compared to Riven, is the implementation of a panoramic viewing engine. While this does produce a very immersive effect, it comes at a small cost to the gameplay. With still images, it's much easier to frame scenes in a way that allows the designers to direct attention to important parts of the scene. With a panoramic view, it's much easier to accidentally miss key items or switches since the player needs to check all 360 degrees of their view.
    One interesting aspect of the game is that Saavedro is played by actor Brad Dourif, who is known for his work in movies such as Child's Play, Mississippi Burning, and the latter two films in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. According to an interview with GameSpy, he agreed to play the role in part due to being a Myst fan.

    Without the music the whole game is less than half as worth !! All emotions, feelings are composed within the soundtrack - and they should also given enough (!) time to reveal their magic (Amateria's Theme, Edanna's Theme). Taking time for slow exploration, combined with environment noises and ambient music results a certain mood of unique enchantment: this is one of the main reasons of success these products have had in the past.

      Sorry, I'm as frustrated with the lack of music as you. I always played this game on the old 10th anniversary DVD version, and never knew my whole life that the music on that version is broken... I just thought it was supposed to sound that way. I want to record a new version of this video with the music working correctly, it's just hard to find the free time lately.

      Naaah Artus really only cares about his ideas. He doesnt even bother to learn your name. Dude. He lets you get sucked into a void between riven and mist 3. Hell, you dont even get to enjoy his library at the end of myst 1. Artus does nothing but betray, underwhelm, amd self serve.
      Artus is not a good person. He is literal feces. His sons fell not far from the tree. His wife pretended to be a goddess. His father? We'll never know if ghen changed, or what artus did to provoke him. You help artus destroy a world, and people who chose his dad over him, in his dads world, not his.
      Artus is as sociopathic as his dad amd sons, if not worse. Catherine is the only worse one, she knows artus and gave him another kid, and look at what else? Artus doesnt care about old worlds. He runs away from messes, makes other people clean them up, and writes new messes. Artus effectively enslaved a person he has never said the first name of, never written a journal about, and never created a world for, or taught to create worlds.
      Soooooooooooo what the fuck are you talking about? We have never gotten the whole story, just thrown in a jail, and told solve your way out for someone elses benefit. What basis have you for saying that?

      @ethanlivemere1162 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@forwarddiscipline Jesus christ dude. One, the comment was talking about Saavedro, not Atrus. Two, it's Atrus, not Artus. Three, if by Atrus destroying a world you mean Riven, that wasn't Atrus' doing. Riven was falling apart because it was an unstable world.
      Next time you write an entire essay in a youtube reply section, try to at least get things right.

    • @Diamond1234
      @Diamond1234 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@forwarddiscipline Nah apparently we wanted to get sucked into that void between Riven and Exile because that actually led back to our Earth (age). Who's to say we even gave Atrus our name lol, it's not like there's a prompt to give "My friend" a name so I just assumed our character just doesn't tell people their name (plus let's be honest, since the lines were all voiced, we all know they just went with a generic "my friend" because using a text to speech to voice a name would be awful and it's suuuuper gender neutral).
      Uh, and the library thing not being able to enjoy it was up to the developers, and we can just assume the player didn't want to read more books after exploring the whole island already, lol. Not sure why you're playing Atrus for that considering he said we could explore the whole island and we just...quit the game after that. That's on you, my guy.
      The reason Catherine pretended to be a goddess was because she had no choice, she literally got there and it was already happening, so she used that power to try to save her people from Gehn. She, in fact, said she didn't like the whole goddess thing in the game itself, so not sure how you missed that.
      ...And yes, you do know if Gehn changed, you wanna see the bad ending where he murdered both you and Atrus with a gun if you trust him? :'D
      Ha, I think you'll find at the beginning of Riven that he literally tells you that he can't come with you to save his wife and fight his dad because he's busy holding the world together with his writing. You didn't watch or play the second game at all, did you? There's plenty of full playthroughs on youtube, how about you watch them~?

    There's actually one more ending where if you go outside where Saavedro is waiting by the ship, (before you trap him), he threatens to throw the book off the into the abyss if you do not go back inside and switch off the shield. You can go back inside before he loses his patience, but if you wait too long it triggers an ending where he throws the book off the edge and then kills you.

    As great a series as Myst was, there are certain moments where there is a jarring disconnect between your experience as a player and the experience you'd actually have if you were there. The final confrontation with Saavedro is such a moment. The last-minute rush to trap him is almost certainly unnecessary. He and you both know that if you release him, he can easily destroy the book, but if he gives you the book first, and you then refuse to release him, he can still kill you. You have every reason to help him but no reason to trust him and he knows that.

    Narratively, it illustrates Saavedro's thirst for revenge, with Sirrus, Achenar and Atrux hanged together.
    And from a gameplay point of view, it gives us a clue that will be very useful in this puzzle of Amateria, at 1:25:00.👍

      i didn't cut anything and i have the music frequency set to the highest setting. perhaps there is some difference between the music in the original version and the anniversary edition? (i'm using the latter in this video.) i don't really have any other explanations for why the music would be different.
      EDIT: ah, nevermind, i've discovered what it is. there is a bug in the anniversary edition that causes some of the music to not play correctly. there is a patch that fixes it, but i wasn't aware of it when i recorded this video. i never knew this was a bug and always just assumed it was the way the game was. i may consider recording this again with the music fixed, thanks for pointing this out!

      nah bud. You learned nothing. You litterally have no basis to know whether helping this dude artus is good or not. Artus is insane. Doesnt even know the charecters name, write a journal about him, a world for him, nothing. You were last seen floating in a void. Artus claps and you come like a good dog, to cleab up yet another mess artus caused. Ps.. Artus destroyed gehns world, not the other way around. Maybe gehn tried to kill artus because artus is like his sons sirrus and assface... I'll never forget how pissed the endings of these games gets me. All the lack of back story the whole way, then the end.

      P.s. if you learned anything it was to submit to the blind will of someone you learn nothing about, for 7 consecutive games. If that taught you anything, let it be stay the fuck away from artus.

    Gorgeous to look at, but all these structures and inventions are so unnecessarily complicated built. Doors and elevators that open in outrageously inefficient and cumbrous ways. Form over function. It would be nice to have some of it in real life though, just for the aesthetics.

      wclifton968 They won’t make any new Myst games, and I disagree with the FPS idea because that’s nowhere near what Myst was, but I agree they should remake the games. They would be amazing in VR. They probably never will though. However, they ARE making a new Myst-LIKE game called Firmament that will be in VR.

    Hmm. Exile doesn't look as good as Riven. The 3D models (especially the rocks) look very cheap and cartoony, even though it looks offline-rendered just like Riven. Riven had much better lighting and materials, too.

    • @advveo
      @advveo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, but to their credit, it is *really* hard to follow up Riven. That game is a masterpiece and would make any sequel disappointing by comparison. I still like Exile a lot though.

    • @notrowleyjefferson1951
      @notrowleyjefferson1951 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think they had to sacrifice a little bit of the texture and quality of the models since this game used 360 degree views unlike riven.

    • @jameskeziahdelaney8272
      @jameskeziahdelaney8272 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, they sacrificed quality for 3D surround movement it seems. The graphics are not a patch on Riven. The fact that this was developed by Presto, rather than Cyan Worlds and released by UbiSoft rather than Broderbund with different art directors (no Robyn Miller or Richard Vander Wende) is probably why I liked it less.
