Myst 3 really is like the hidden gem of the franchise, especially considering that it wasn't developed by the "original" developer.
Presto had big shoes to fill, but they did a great job and really managed to create a worthy successor to the previous games in the series.
While it may not have expanded on the idea and overall concept of the series as much as Riven or URU did (except the introduction of 360° images), but like you said, it really managed to capture the "feeling" of the franchise and delivered in pretty much every aspect people loved about the previous games, which kinda makes it feel so "quintessentially Myst" to me that it's still kinda hard to believe that this wasn't actually developed by Cyan.

    • @cursedblake

When I first played it I had no idea it wasn’t cyan, and I think that’s a good sign that presto did an amazing job. Thanks for the comment

      I beg to disagree...
Granted, M3E has great "visuals" and all, but "visuals" don't *_make_* the game (at least not within this genre), they only "enhance the experience" - and then only up to a point. It's *_the story_* that makes it - and this is the area where M3E kinda fails flat. Or at least "is tad on a wanting side".
Grim Fandango, for instance, was (and still is) a truly captivating game, even with its crude graphics (to the "laughable" point sometimes), and same goes for original MYST game - and frankly, I'd prefer even that point-and-click "hypercard" MYST over Myst III Exile (or the latter sequels) any day. And then there's this "Starship Titanic" thing - with quite nice graphics and very clever way of interacting with these bots, but that's about it - it just lacks a well thought, coherent and captivating story. Nice, enjoyable - but hardly "captivating" or "memorable" (bar for few hilarious moments/ bots).
In fact I find the whole narrative/ storyline of "M3E" kinda, erm, artificial (like in "artificial flavour"), "a cheap knock-off of earlier tales" if you will - or maybe a "forced sequel" (or "reheated leftovers") meant to squeeze the MYST cash cow like a lemon, till the last drop.
I mean, this can be done well too - a pizza after all came to the table (pun intended) just as way to utilise "leftovers from previous dinner" for poor Italian peasants struggling to make ends meet, but then there's more to it than just throwing it all together with a hefty dose of oregano and tomatoes and putting it in the oven - but I digress here.
So, tad "forced" or "artificial", and on the top of it smacking of early wokeism and "DEI" rubbish, squeezed in with hardly any rhyme or reason - or any bearing on the core narrative.
Off-putting, if you ask me - it could do just as well without that whole bunch of "renewables/ love and peace / women leadership" hogwash thrown in for a better reception among snowflakes and "narcissi". Should I feel like, or want to "enjoy" or "experience" that... "idealistic ideas", let us say, I'd go to BBC website (or any other progressive society for mutual adoration) - here I want to enjoy a captivating story, a saga-like narrative, not the contemporary much ado about nothing. If MYST or Riven could do without it, why M3E HAS to "include and diverse"? My guess CYAN as such no longer has a control over it, and most of the young folks doing this "reincarnation" are kinda brain... cleansed, so they just HAVE TO "include" all that. (Just like that bright and brave lass Budweiser company will remember for decades to come - "Older but wiser" indeed, heh heh, wink wink... ;-)
And then, I just remembered, there's this Journeyman Project game (The Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time, to be specific, haven't played the other ones) - another fantastic and well made story, with a lots of puzzles, AND - last but not least! - tons of info about distant/ ancient cultures and their lives. No need for contemporary "DEI" ideology stuffed down players' throats...
So, to sum up this little ramble of mine - YES, a nice graphics - that 360° rendering is what I'd love to see in Riven, "back then" - and YES, beautiful scenery (although Riven is indisputably better in this area), and then YES again - mind-boggling (often to the point of insanity) puzzles - but that's about it. "Beautiful house, but nobody home", as they say.
If someone came to M3E world for puzzles and views - fine, "your desires will not go unsatisfied" - but if someone - like myself - expected it to be another great story, a true continuation build upon previous stories - then "sorry, wrong place".
And somehow that "Little Boxes" song just jumped into my mind right now:
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same
Maybe I'm too harsh here, but that "artificiality" of M3E is my biggest gripe (and disappointment) with this release. Kinda kitschy, the "overall feeling", if you ask me...

As a kid in the 90s, I was obsessed with the Myst games and books. When this game was announced, it was the impetus that finally led me to buying a PC (i.e., begging my parents for one). I remember preordering the deluxe edition of the game, buying the strategy guide, and then having to wait about two more months before I could finally play it. I absolutely love this game. The story is great, the villain is awesome, and the music and ambiance are top notch. It was great finally seeing what Atrus was up to following the Book of D'Ni. The puzzles are also much more accessible and fun to me. I was able to beat it without using the guide, which I could do with Myst 1 but not Riven.

Yeah I found the puzzles more in the same design of myst, they felt easier but not in a bad way. I didn’t get this game when it came out, I didn’t know it existed till I went searching to play myst and riven again so was super hyped to play new games in the series. Thanks for the comment I really appreciate it !

Just played this game again this past weekend. It's been about 20 years since I played it last, but I still completed it in a single day. The trailer for Myst III: Exile is what finally got me interested in the video game series. Plus, you just gotta love Brad Dourif who always seems to portray a villain who sounds like he's in a stage play.

I remember first playing Myst 3 as part of the 10th anniversary DVD edition. I remember the puzzles being quite immersive (like all Myst games) but especially Amateria. And Brad Dourif is a great actor - he was also in Lord of the Rings as that creepy dude Wormtongue.

I completely agree, I feel as if this game is often overlooked. My favorite part of the Myst franchise is going around to all of the different worlds, so while I understand that Riven is definitely the best game of the series, Exile is probably my favorite (or verrry close to Riven). It takes the original aspect of Myst, with a hub world that branches out to various other worlds, and improves upon it vastly with puzzles that are more intertwined with the environments, like in Riven.

I actually really liked Myst III, perhaps because Brad Dourif is a great character actor and it progressed Atrus's story. Some of the puzzles were oddly implemented, but I still have a pretty soft place in my heart for this one.

  • @JuriAmari
    @JuriAmari ปีที่แล้ว +1

I recently played the OG Myst trilogy after finishing Obduction and I was impressed by how memorable the puzzles were. Riven had great complexity but Exile knew how to tie the complexity together to a more cohesive whole and the plot points hit harder too. Jack Wall’s score and Brad Dourif’s acting also stands out (in a great way - Wall really knows how to set an atmosphere as proven by Mass Effect 2. Dourif has a depth in performance not often seen in acting outside of theater). Amateria was my favorite age as well because it made Myst and all the ages we’ve stepped into so far feel a lot more real. It even motivated me to try my hand writing fan fic that’s an immediate follow up to Exile because I wanted to imagine Saveedro’s homecoming and the possible reconciliation efforts between him and Atrus.

I’ve never played the original Myst, but was a huuuuge fan of Riven as a kid (and still, of course!) When I played Myst 3, I remember everything felt quicker…the pacing, the feeling you could be murdered at any moment created suspense, it felt like you kind of had to hurry. But the game felt easier and more accessible…so wasnt a panic, as much as just a steady pacing through the game. (As apposed to being lost for days and alone in Riven. You’re not alone, but its much easier to forget in Riven) Also, from what I remember Myst 3 seemed much more alive overall! Brad as the villain and intense stakes, the music was great, and there was alot of emphasis on animals and plants.
Im due for another playthrough, and I recently revisited Riven. Looking forward to it. Great video! Ps, Im surprised to learn this wasnt the Cyan guys’ work 🤯

I really loved Myst 3. I especially liked how it was the first of the Myst games, and the first game I remember seeing that used the newer idea of rendering a scene using a cube, where you're at the center of it and each side is a 90 degree view which then makes it appear as a normal environment you can look around (you're rotating the cube). Called cube mapping (I have programmed it myself since then). But this was the first game I remember that used it, previous Myst games just mostly had single images, no looking around. You had to click to change views and see another render. This could also use newer hardware acceleration for the cube mapping as well. I loved the puzzles in it and I especially liked that natural area I think you said you didn't like. I HOPE Cyan can work out a deal to remaster this, but someone else owns the rights which annoys me.

Myst has been remade so many times, and Riven is now *finally* getting its turn at a Cyan remake. I'm hoping someday soon Exile gets a similar remake or remaster - even if it's not a "full" realtime remake, I at least am hoping someone can actually figure out a way to excellently AI-upscale all the graphics to 4k quality, and replace the existing game .PAK files with the higher-res versions. I know someone's found out how to decompile the PAKs already, but to my knowledge no software exists to pack the extracted and upscaled stuff back into the format. Someone needs to figure that out, because that's the main thing holding us back from a higher-res version of Exile. Seems like the sort of thing that a good programmer or two could crack in a matter of months, and if Cyan could get that moving forward I imagine it could be pulled off for under $100k, and potentially be really profitable, a great way to persuade more people to revisit this underrated game.

Loved the Myst series. I picked up Myst back in 1994 when as a teenage got my first Pentium desktop computer with Windows 95. I was totally drawn into the world. Then in 1997, I got Riven and adored that game as well. I also enjoyed Exile and loved the update to the graphics and FMV. I continued to get the rest of the Myst series, even URU, but could never get into URU properly. I didn't enjoy Myst 4 or Myst 5, as much as the first 3. I still have all of the games on CD and DVD, but have no way of playing them, because I don't have a desktop computer any longer, only a Playstation console. I really wish that Cyan would bring the entire Myst series to the console space, but I'm doubtful that it would ever happen. I am hoping that with the Riven remake that it might be a possibility and hoping that upon the release of the new Playstation VR system that they will consider bringing over the new Myst 2021 VR game, as I would love to revisit Myst again in VR.

And its main screenshot felt like something gloomy and dark compared to Myst where the universe felt bright, just like in Obduction. URU also felt gloomy but I loved it.

as they say, there's no right or wrong answer I guess, haha! By the way, have you played Firmament? And if so... and as a real fan, do you have any honest opinion on it?
I'm personally wanna try it but too afraid to get disappointed and I feel like it will put a dent in my memory of Cyan's works. The world's looks are very impressive but that's something you start ignoring after a couple of minutes. I've heard it's very repetitive and the puzzles are so-so. If you have tried it, did it ruin your overall impression?

Exile was definitely underrated in my opinion. Having played it after Riven, there were more "pros" about the game then "cons", for me. Graphics and FMV were phenomenal, dare I say better than Riven, and I appreciated that the puzzles and resulting outcomes were more centralized than Riven - I just felt that I spent a lot of time running around Riven. The only nitpick for me was that I wish the cursor did a better job of telling you which direction you could move in. Brad Dourif was perfectly cast as Saavedro...I'd heard that he was a big fan of the Myst games, and pushed hard for the role. Exile will be a game I plan on playing again soon.

Super late, but I think Myst 3 ended up being my favorite. I first played Myst as a gradeschooler and while I liked it, it was too hard to get anywhere so set it aside for over a decade and when I came back to complete it the graphics and a few of the obtuse puzzles still put me off loving it. In high school I got Riven, but made the crucial mistake of getting it as the 4 cd version instead of 1 dvd. Do you realize how sucky those trams are when you have to disc swap every single one? I got nowhere. Myst 3 came out when I was in college and could finally enjoy both the puzzles and the graphics together and I managed to complete it without a walkthru. I'm with you and dislike the Myst 4 pure 3d look, the prerendered is better. I went back to retry Riven on Steam a few years back, but still never finished, maybe should give that another shot...

Man, I may be the only one in the world that thinks Myst 3 was a step backwards. The graphics were more obviously compressed and stretched due to the 360 engine, and likewise I have always felt the FMV actors felt less integrated into the world, the acting was cheesier, and the video again was more pixelated and poorly keyed.
I felt the worlds were cool, but not Myst-like. And this started the trend of one-upping the game before it when it comes to ridiculous contraptions housing the books.
Much love for Presto Studios -- Journeyman may be my favorite game of all time -- but I just feel only Cyan is capable of a proper Myst game (ahem...ignoring Myst V completely)

I’ll be honest, I tried playing Exile and I thought it was terrible.
Garbage, nonsensical puzzle design mixed with insanely frustrating and disorienting movement. I could hardly parse what was going on most of the time and I kept getting lost because and they tried to copy Riven’s natural look and failed.
So much random crap happens, it’s all just deeply unsatisfying trial and error. Oh, what did that [thing] do? Spend ten minutes stumbling around the maze of invisible walls to find out! Watch a thirty second cutscene where like five different things happen all over the place. Get picked up by a freaking BIRD.
The only positive things I have to say about the game are that it looks and sounds great, and that Brad Dourif is awesome. I’d comment on the story but I gave up after getting lost in Amateria’s terrible layout, and that was WITH the guide pretty much open at all times.
