This is the best bebop jazz piano tutorial and lesson ever. Finally, someone who could really break this down. You made my weekend, thanks! The first time I heard this song was when Phineas Newborn Jr did it. Trying to learn that was like eating a ten-pound steak LOL. Thanks for sharing!
I thought it was called the “6-th / diminished” scale after all the Barry Harris stuff thinking about it as alternating between Bbmaj6 (6th) and F7b9 (diminished). The extra note being the b9 of the Dominant to give the dim7 built off Gb. (Isn’t that what Adam calls it in his courses?) But hey… if Peter didn’t know it was called “major bebop”, then I guess I shouldn’t feel so bad I didn’t know.
Thanks for the breakdown of the bebop scale, but what about the tune's construction? It's really quite tricky and asymmetrical and I think that lots of people would appreciate a deeper analysis of its elements. In a wider sense, do you think there's too much emphasis on harmony and chord scales and not enough on rhythmic, motific and melodic concepts in jazz education?
Love it. Early intermediate pianist here. Where can I find the best fingering for these scales? I understand the scales but can’t put it in action in time.
The major bebop scale is the same as Barry Harris' Sixth Diminished. 🙂 The "major second" is really a diminished third. Barry kept his assistant around for that kind of stuff haha. This lesson helped to break me out of using one or the other, (chord tone/diminished tone) the flat 6 is still a valuable tone to be played over simply major. Learning to treat all chromatics in such a 'passing' manor is key.
Hey guys. Love ur vids. I wish u could make a video on eye of the hurricane -the live version by herbie, pat, dave and jack. Herbies solo was great but i couldn't understand the theory behind it.
what do you think, Peter of this scale for 5tuplets? C7 13b9(or octatonic) C Db Eb E E# (on one beat) F# G A Bb B of course the scale Eb E Gb G Ab- A Bb C Db D is ass wel playable on the C7 a almost unhearable effect further what about on C7 Bboctatonic(subdominant ) than changing to C octa than resolve to the relaive tonic
The Major BeBop looks like a "Constructed Scale," like the Dim/Whole Tone Scale, but with the Dim on top of the first five notes of the Ionian Mode: 5Ionian/4Dim. The Dom BeBop looks like the first 5 notes of the Ionian w' 4 Chromatic notes on top: 5Ionian/4Chromatic. It's easier for me to think of scales like this from the Top Down: Dim/Ionian; Chromatic/Ionian

One of my top favorite tunes
Love to see Peter Martin again on the channel :)
Great analysis of this tune. Your improvisation really captures the blues elements of Bebop.
Such beautiful lines, thx Mr Martin.
That one dislike was from a drummer.
You must be that have meant "bad drummer". Can't most drummers who also play piano play both well?
que swing peter! saludos desde Argentina. Gracias por la información

Thanks, it really makes a difference for me to think about it this way, it's not just some random note, it's a V7b9 built into the major scale!

For 8 note scales you can use 1234 starting on different fingers. Bb always messes me up
Love it. Great taste.
Brilliant guy... Humble intelligent swinging musician...

Id love to see more of this video, is that only on the website?
on the head measure, on the E-6 you play a A where the realbooks have Bb. Any comments on which is more commonly played?
Eb-6 that is
Pure magic
