    Dear Andrea, just listened to your recording with the WDR-BB, and must confess this is the very better version, keeping the drive & power of the Horace Silber composition! Rely on your stomach feeling ( and maybe the arrangement of your friends of the SAJB ) when adopting a tune, I think you have the talent to adopt a song in your way ... even when some say it's only a copy - it isn't ! Your voice, your timing & phrasing is your very own. Go on, stay Andrea !
    To be fair to the band: excellent as always !

    Andrea is now using the 3rd valve slide to bring those notes into tune-advanced trumpet technique to be sure. About 2:10 She may have been doing this before but it never was obvious on the videos.

    • @dmbaturin
      @dmbaturin 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been wondering about that technique. Is it better than correcting intonation through embouchure variation? Or it's a spot where "lipping it up/down" is ineffective on trumpet?

    • @tomstrikemusic
      @tomstrikemusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniil Baturin As a trumpet player, I can confirm that's correct technique. You can affect the pitch more accurately using slide rather than lip. While lip is still necessary for microadjustments, some notes on the trumpet are just more naturally out of tune that the third valve slide (and even the first valve slide at times, although you use that for much fewer notes (basically just E and A using first and second valves)) is needed to bring them in tune. Using the third valve slide is common practice on trumpet, especially for D with first and third valve and C# with all three valves. However, not all trumpets are created equal and the fact that Motis knows her instrument well enough to know when and when not to use slide (and how much slide to use) does show a mastery of her own instrument. She knows how to play around its downfalls and highlight it's capabilities. She's an amazing player. (Sorry for necro-ing, just wanted to put in my 2¢)

    • @aragon1253
      @aragon1253 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lipping causing stress on the embouchure and kills endurance. You should use the slides whenever playing the first or third valves in the lower register for proper intonation. That's why the trumpet has finger hooks in the first place... higher register there isn't much point since a trumpet will probably play sharp regardless.

      She has played and toured with the Joan Chamorro quartet for many years because they are quality performers and her friends. She has over the same years also played with the youth band and many other combinations. Perhaps you will approve of the group featured here but I believe her main criterion is playing with people that she likes and who play great music: th-cam.com/video/Ye9IM35Fppo/w-d-xo.html

      @@robertvanruyssevelt7159 But you don´t understand my point. How healthy is it for an artist to keep playing in a band lead by the old music teacher, who discovered her, for years and years and years??? Jazz is a special kind of improvisational music that is extremely depandant on freedom and the staedy input of new ideas for the artist to develop maximally.

    • @robertvanruyssevelt7159
      @robertvanruyssevelt7159 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kajgenell She doesn't. She tours widely including to Chile with a number of combos which you don't see because mostly they are not filmed and posted on You Tube. On the other hand Joan Chamorro posts hundreds of videos which include times when Andrea Motis is back in Barcelona and willing to guest or even back up with one of Joan's groups. You can rest assured that she has been in charge of her own career for at least ten years and experiences a variety or work.
