LSU football falls to Florida State 45-24 and Brian Kelly is to blame

- LSU football went into the 2023 season as a top-five team in the country and as two point favorites on the road in Orlando against the Florida State Seminoles, another top-ten team that returns more production from last season than nearly every other team in college football. But with LSU's talent, veteran leadership, and experienced head coach they deserved the preseaon hype and benefit of the doubt Week 1, right?
Wrong. LSU football was out-coached, out-toughed, and out-played on Sunday night at Camping World Stadium. Even though LSU went into the locker room up 17-14 at halftime, the Tigers still left points and opportunities on the field and did not do anything in the second half to help themselves. The Tigers looked lethargic, unmotivated, and unconfident in the second half and let the Noles score 31 unanswered points. Losing to a top ten team is not unacceptable; losing to a top ten team in the fashion LSU did is unacceptable, especially for a second year coaching staff that had all offseason to fix the problems that plagued the Tigers throughout the 2022 season that do not look resolved this year.
So what cost LSU the game? Who gets the blame and who should LSU fans point to to improve in order to move on from this loss and resurrect the season?

We physically dominated a good SEC team for the first time in nearly a decade. It was visible. Good to look like an FSU team again. LSU will be fine as long as the team doesn't quit.

FSU alum here. I honestly think LSU will be fine. The Noles are loaded and stupid focused right now and Norvell finally has the players for his system and culture. I don’t love BK in big games, but LSU has the talent to make a run and win the west again. Good luck to y’all the rest of the way!
5’7 below average LSU corners, versus 6’4, and 6’7 Elite FSU receivers was the real difference. Second, LSU’s lack of depth on the offensive line and especially on the defensive line was very noticeable. Don’t even get me started on TERRIBLE Coaching for LSU. YIKES!

Tbh I’m not sure. I think they thought they was gon do something exciting only bc the baseball and women basketball team was able to win natty in their second year. It’s Brian Kelly second year I had some hopes they can do something. I knew FSU had the juice to win once I heard the commentator say most of the starters back for FSU to have a chance to win the Natty this season.

I'm sorry, but this is a microcosm of who Brian Kelly has been. What really bothered me was the press conference after. Alotta "They, They, They ". Mike Norvell out coached him, and I'm sure he will get zero credit for it. FSU was the better team, again. They've dominated the head to head in this series, and nobody at LSU wants to admit it.

FL ST was a much better team than LSU this year. Last year was a freak accident and LSU was quite a bit more talented than FSU. Dispite it being FSUs second game and only LSU's first game, take away the player that seemingly had never tried to field a fair catch before for LSU, and its not even close. That was just a freak thing and FL St capitalized. They were not the better team in 2022. They just got the win.

Moving Perkins to the middle, and our red zone and running play-calling looked like sabotage by the coordinators. Complete rebellion from within to destroy this talented team. Then the WR drops were sabotage by the players. Top to bottom, LSU killed itself. Sad.

Fsu was elite on 3rd down all last year also so dont feel bad they were #3 in the nation on 3rd down conversion percentage convertont over 51% on the whole year which is incredable, so its not just yall deffense, yall will be ok i promise

Historically Florida State owns LSU. LSU fans should be use to losing to Florida State which is a better football program historically.
One thing I noticed last year and game one. Daniels doesn't try to fake that he has the ball after a handoff. After he hands the ball off he just stands there. That makes it easy for the defense to know who has the football.
I noticed that. He needs to watch a lot of Sam Hartman film. Hartman (former Wake, now ND) is a master at using the hand off to confuse the defense. He did that to us (FSU) last year.

Mike Norvell has outcoached Bryan Kelly for 4 years in a row now , Norvell took a terrible young Fsu team that shouldnt had even been on the same field as Notredame that year to overtime
And that lost the next week to an FCS school. 2021 was a crazy year for FSU.

Very thoughtful take. As a Nole fan I feel your pain because we had so much it over the past 6 years. I think what you are missing is that LSU is not bad. It's just that FSU is that good. It took till the second half to tell but our O and D lines were just utterly dominant. The LSU lines were just worn out by the 4th quarter. They had nothing left and our guys were just getting started. There really were no 2nd half adjustments except that Benson (RB) was reminded to trust his o line and use the holes they were opening for him, and Travis lost his jitters. Other than that was that the LSU lines ran out of steam and the FSU lines did not. At least that's how it looked for me. I think ya'll will easily win your next 7 games and the only challenge on your schedule is Bama, with A&M maybe being a trap game. Go Noles!
I am afraid it is going to get a lot worse. Our team is weak, mentally and physically our coaching staff is lazy as hell and flat out dumb. We fired a good DB coach and a good Strength coach for this garbage?

LSU coaching staffing has failed on season openers too many times. The team did not look prepared to compete to win at all
Don’t forget Johnny Wilson who is FSU’s 6’7” wide receiver, that dude is freak of nature who is hard enough to cover before Coleman was added to the roster. Florida State returned 87% of the players that were eligible for the draft. I did not hear about it until after the game. But, why would Coach Kelly say “We are going to beat the hell out of FSU”!?! Coach Bowden would have likely put that on a bulletin board, Coach Norvell said “We need to take care of our business”. The unsung heroes for FSU are the big uglies on the O-Line. Home & Home scheduled with Alabama coming to Tallahassee in 2025 & Florida State going to Tuscaloosa in 2026. Georgia is coming to Tallahassee in 2027 & Florida State will be in Athens in 2028. Those should be fun trips that are drivable for fanbases. Go Noles!! 🐴🔥🏹

Nope don't blame him recievers dropped more than 10 passes if it hits your hand you catch it. Play calling was terrible. It would be simple if daniels was the problem. Just put nuss in and win the game right. Nuss isn't the answer get over that ish already. The problems are bigger than daniels. Daniels doesn't call plays, block , play defense or catch the ball. Think about it.
LSU fans were very high on their own teams improvements and they may have a good team. Most fan bases watch their own teams and discount their opponents improvements and that appears to be what happened going into this game. FSU was a good team last year that returned 87% of their offensive production which was dominating defences the second half of the season. They had several track meet games and outscored a red hot Richardson at UF and a well prepared OU team in a bowl game.
They then add several big time pieces to that offence in the portal. It is very possible they are just that good on offence and took a half a game in the first game of the season to get going on a good LSU defence. Like LSU’s drops, Wilson dropped several key 3rd down passes in the 2nd quarter. But unlike LSU, that stopped in the second half. Furthermore, FSU got the run game going and at that point Travis was unstoppable just like the second half of last year where FSU was one of the best teams in college at 3rd down conversions.
Without those key drops FSU scores even more. Just like LSU FSU left plenty of points on the field in the first half. Good luck the rest if the year. At least it was three touchdowns to a top ten team and not Duke.
I truly felt bad for BK last night during the press conference. I'm not sure I've ever seen such a dejected looking coach. Gotta suck it up, LSU. Football season has just begun. LSU is still dangerous. I'm a FSU person, btw. Your season is far from over.

Not to overreact from week one, but there are some ALARMING signs. 1) where was Perkins? 2) we have maybe one quality SEC caliber CB 3) BK chasing points in the first half 4) no fight in the team in the 4th qtr. 5) zero run game outside of JD scrambling. This is rough....

Thats a symptom of the lack of depth. Kelly's first recruiting class was anemic and poor. Not his fault but that is just a fact. He really has 1 class under his belt. Not enough to build depth yet. That OL was just pitiful. That always makes for a long night.

I see it differently. The loss last year was harder for me. LSU was a much better team. Without a player who was seemingly unable to actually field a punt, the game would not have even been close last year. This year, we were just outmatched. FSU was just better. The LSU O line got man handled all night. When you can't get a 1 yard push on 4+ tries....you have a long night ahead of you. Our DL got good pressure but just couldn't come away with a sack. Our DB's played pretty poorly even beyond the obvious size advantage FSU had. They were out of position many times and WR's were far to open when the QB was scrambling ..which was quite often. The run game is non existent ...see our poor OL. The LSU QB was much improved in his accuracy but did not make progressive reads well at times. He was constantly harassed in the backfield. HOpefully just game 1 issues. It is important to remember this is only year 2 of Kelley and his first year LSU played well above its weight class with an anemic recruiting class. Its a process and LSU just lacks player depth right now. Thas how you are winning at halftime with 2 blown TD's and get dominated in the second half. Hopefully Kelly can do like he did last year and get the very most out of the players he has. Its not the end of the world, FL ST is legit top 10, likely top 5. LSU is not....not right now.
LSU's last TD was a gift from FSU's prevent defense and the refs giving them an extra down they didn't deserve because the clock shouldn't have stopped once the chains reset. FSU should have won that game 38-17 but LSU fans refuse to actually see all the points FSU left on the field in 2022.
FSU was the way, way, way better team both times. They only showed it on the scoreboard once.

@@txkevin3467 Those muffed punts resulted in ZERO points for FSU! Nada! Zip! After that first muff, the drive ended with a failed 4th down conversion that looked like DPI on Mycah Pittmann. The second muff ended with that FSU fumble at the one. Don't act like they completely changed the game because they didn't at all. That's 2 FSU TDs left on the field. That's 38-23.
So you think that LSU would get off their last snap with a second left on the clock after the refs give the signal to start the clock and before time ran out? No. Not even close. That's 38-17. FSU converted 3rd down after 3rd down and controlled the game despite leaving so many points on the board.
Oh, and our kicker missed a FG. It was not blocked. That would be 41-17, but I don't count that because our kicker was terrible last year. So still 38-17, but that's another instance of FSU just making the game closer than it should have been.
Are you really going to sit there and say 2 turnovers that resulted in zero points for FSU completely changed the game? Because if you are, that's just you lying to yourself and everyone else. LSU's only lead was when the score was 3-0. LSU never even tied the game up after that. You need to face the facts and the facts are LSU had no business being within a point of FSU in 2022.
BK didn’t lose this one the players did. They left a lot of points on the field. Kids laughing and smiling on the sidelines, offensive line still isn’t where they should be. Defense appeared slow and confused the majority of the game. Wide receivers couldn’t catch the ball. Etc etc. FSU played horrible in the first half and their game started coming together in the 2nd, and LSU rolled over. LSU gave them the game. One of the worst played games I’ve seen from LSU. Hopefully they come together and play LSU ball.
Kelly did lose it no adjustments were made at halftime. No substitutions were made. Defensive schemes weren't changed you got beat by the same receiver on the same play four times.

Never mind FSU was winning 24-10 when they should have been up 27-10, 31-10, or even 38-10. No, FSU was "lucky" they only won by 1. It wasn't "lucky" that LSU even had a shot at putting the game into OT when their last play never should have happened. 24-17 was the real final score of that game but the refs absolutely gave LSU chance after chance. Even a dirty hit on Travis trying to take him out of the game resulted in a TD for FSU. Stay classy, LSU.
32-31 happens. "LSU would beat FSU now easily" in every variation. No respect for FSU. "FSU lost to every ranked team they played!" Yeah, that happened. I guess you don't want to count LSU as a ranked team (ranking at the time doesn't matter). Don't bother figuring out why (injuries, especially to Fabo, at the worst times). "Worst case is we go to the Sugar Bowl!"

Beat an overmatched Purdue 63-7 in the Citrus Bowl. "We're going to be unstoppable next year. Look at how great our transfer class is!" Never once did LSU fans acknowledge Norvell is the undisputed king of the transfer portal. It may not be #1 on paper, but Norvell takes the RIGHT players. Best transfer CB -> FSU. Best WR -> FSU. Still have Johnny Wilson. Still have Trey Benson. Still have Jordan Travis. Still have the most returning production in the FBS. Arguably the biggest losses were Jammie Robinson and Treshawn Ward. Everything LSU fans were proud of, FSU did better. But LSU fans still don't know that a storm is coming to Orlando despite all the warnings. "You're just homers." "FSU isn't at this level."
A bunch of national media says the same nonsense as if a 40% blue-chip ratio is terrible and all blue-chips are created equal. Jordan Travis was a 3-star coming out of high school. Go ahead and try to argue he's not one of the Top 5 QBs in the country, if not the very best. Jared Verse was playing for Albany a couple years ago. Not Auburn or Alabama. Albany. He doesn't even have a rating on 247. Maybe he's not the best, but I've got to think he's in the Top 25 of DEs this season.
"LSU is going to blow out FSU." This is not just one LSU fan. This is dozens if not hundreds or thousands of LSU fans thinking the same thing. Same words, different year. Same result: a giant L to an FSU team that wasn't playing a perfect game by any means and still dominated LSU regardless of the score. Still the same old "what LSU did wrong" instead of "what FSU did right." You think that little patch with an SEC logo means you're better than any other team without that patch. News flash: FSU is better than at least 13 of the 14 current SEC teams and I wouldn't bet on UGA over FSU, either.
I'm thankful FSU doesn't play LSU anytime soon. LSU has the worst fanbase in CFB. Even Miami(FL) and UF fans have more respect for FSU. 9-2 didn't convince you. 45-24 didn't convince you. You will continue to run your mouths as if the hot air is going to increase LSU's score. Pay attention and learn something about your opponents. Respect your opponents. And while you're at it, learn some humility.

Florida st will drop a game or two to someone there supposed to beat if they win out I’ll eat crow there good but I don’t know of there great yet because lsu was terrible in all phases of the game we were terrible in the first half and were still up 17-14 if we played great football in the first half lsu would of been up 28-7 or maybe worse but nothing but horrible execution in every phase of the game

On the OL, LSU needs to move Zlance Heard to right tackle and move Emery Jones to right guard in the Grambling game. As FSU was taking advantage of number 70 for the whole game. As Myles Frazier is really a tackle playing out of position and he is getting eaten alive.
His arrogance in "Guaranteeing" that LSU would win was their Achilles Heel! I love to see teams that are so full of themselves and think that they are invincible get beat down into reality!

There is an easy fix for the offense and that is to bench Jayden Daniels and replace him with Garrett Nussmeier as the starter at QB.
As FSU made an adjustment in the second half to stop defending against the deep pass to sell out to stop Jayden Daniels and LSU's running game in the second half, and the reason why they did that is they gambled that Jayden Daniels couldn't throw the ball deep, and they gambled correctly. As they put another safety in the box and LSU was outnumbered for the remainder of the game, and as a result Jayden Daniels or LSU's running game never could get going.
Moreover, that second half film is now going to serve as a blueprint for everyone on how to stop LSU. As every team LSU plays from here on out, will study that film thoroughly.
Hence, the solution is to bench Jayden Daniels and make Garrett Nussmeier the starter at QB. As Nuss has a far more dynamic passing game relative to Jayden Daniels short passing game only. As Nuss will spread the defense out and at the same time, open up LSU's running game. Nuss will make LSU's offense far more dynamic and balanced.
I mean, if FSU played the same kind of defense it played Sunday night in the second-half with Garrett Nussmeier as the starting QB, Garrett Nussmeier would eat FSU's defense alive.
The obvious truth is that with Jayden Daniels as LSU's starter at QB, LSU's offense is far too one-dimensional and easy to stop and as we all saw Sunday night. With Nuss as the starter at QB, on the other hand, LSU's offense is far more dynamic and hard to stop. Why? Because Nuss will spread the defense out and open up the running game simultaneously.
I'm not too worried about the secondary being burned repeatedly because there are not many teams with receivers as good as FSU's WR are or with a QB as as good as Jordan Travis is..Again because there are not many teams with QBs as good as Jordan Travis. As Jordan Travis is an astronomically far better QB relative to the short passer only Jayden Daniels. As Jayden Daniels was completely out classed in that game.
The refs certainly tried to help LSU. Those refs were shameful garbage.
