The self-discipline he displayed may be the basic AF standard but, when you hear stories like Brian's, I mean, surviving that situation? With those injuries? It seems almost a superhuman feat. I wouldn't have heard this story but for BRCC. Thank you, Team. Then, the outcome of Dennis' death simply bursts my heart. There are no other words. It truly is a 'Community' with Vets. Glad he was able to sit down and tell this story. I'm sure not a day goes by that he doesn't think about that cold, dark night off the coast of North Carolina. God obviously had plans for him to hang around.
What about all the deserving young people who die in boating accidents every year? Young folks who prayed for deliverance, and God was otherwise occupied?

Holy cow… it’s great to see him looking so good telling this story… but it sounds like he’s lucky to have survived this experience. I’m sorry to hear that Dennis did not. Watching him tell the story of the rescuer coming down that line…. He was choked up, and so was I. And how about that truck he restored?! Awesome!
The story he didn't tell was the everyday, every hour chronic pain he has to live with. So good to see him active and in his beloved truck! It's a place of peace and pleasure, and like him, a downright awesome restoration!
SO sorry for the loss of his fellow pilot may he R.I.P. & may we never forget his sacrifice. Thank you Capt Udell for your service & Thank You BRCC for telling our service members' stories of sacrifice, fortitude & service to our country. God Bless & Keep Them Safe!
Everything about Capt. Udell’s story is inspiring. Just getting ready to go back to recurrent flight training and his story about his dad teaching him that if he didn’t know everything about his airplane then he didn’t know shit is motivating and a great standard to shoot for! His dad teaching him to know everything about his airplane and to “always trust your instruments but always listen to your airplane” is absolute gold for an aviator and just confirms that this legend was raised by a legend. 👏🇺🇸
Wow… I’m putting this into perspective for myself, I was not yet 2 days old when this happened, to think of being born and something so visceral as this story happening at the same time is crazy for me to think about! Im so glad you made it out and to share your story to hear about it 27 years later. Mind boggling to say the least!
The sheer determination and resilience of this man is a lesson never to be forgotten : when you think the chips are down, the way out is possible through the will to live ! Thank you for sharing !
I've been a Life Support Fitter for 15 years now and this is one of the craziest stories i've ever heard.. and i love that his life support guys gave him shit and "reinforced" his pocket cause he likes to leave the aircraft at high speed hahaha Salute to you Sir and thank you for telling your story
That is a super beautiful truck bud. As a USAF veteran I respect what you have done and I am so sorry for the loss of your friend Dennis. God bless you sir and his family for y’all’s sacrifice sir.
Wow, what a story. Getting into the raft part was chilling. Finding out his WSO didn’t make brought back some tough memories. I survived a midair in Phantoms. The other crew didn’t make it. There is nothing like knowing your squadron mates are dead and you’re alive. Semper Fi.
I know you guys are doing the best job you can. But there is a problem here. There is no need for combat pilots anymore, not on board aircraft, and it has been that way for decades. In the 1980s, I was an electronics avionics technician on F106 Delta darts, all of them are fully automated and they are already 20 years old. There was no need for a pilot whatsoever. I also witnessed Drone aircraft being flown from the ground fully automated at Tyndall Air Force Base, at that time. You know exactly what I am talking about. It is a waste of money and a risk to our national security to have pilots flying combat aircraft, and it has been that way for decades. Quite frankly the military is stupid. Later I earned my engineering degree and design components for the F22 stealth fighter. Probably a great airplane, no need for a pilot though, and we are wasting payload and capability by putting human beings on board aircraft that are going into combat. The Ukraine war Is proving pretty much that manNed combat aircraft Are pretty useless, expensive to operate, and are providing prisoners of war to our enemies, that is you!!! You are nothing but a liability and a mission degraded …. I know this stuff as a technician, as an engineer, and as a pilot myself. The pilot is the weakest link. But your pride keeps you guys from admitting that. You were obsolete 60 years ago, and you were obsolete today. What a shame this is and what a waste of money, and if we’re not careful someone else with drone technology will kill us all.
Thank you for all you have done, and for giving me some more motivation. I have been fighting with an injury from a flying accident and have been told i couldnt do things again also. Im happy to hear he has been able to return to the things he loves
hey man, feel free to not answer - but what happened? Im a GA pilot and haven't flown in years, I wanna get back into it but Im a bit scared. Curious what you went through.
@@kasparpovilanskas4674 Your good, I was a paraglider pilot since I was 16, but in 2018 I hit a pocket of weird air on landing that folded my glider completely in half. I hit the ground from around 35 ft, and shattered my spine. I love flight and have been back in the air, but not in a glider again. I get having a fear of the unknown.. makes it hard to get in the air again. No one could judge you for that. All I can say is, if your worried, maybe fly with an instructor a bit more or even advance your training further until you feel comfortable? I would also suggest flying early mornings and evenings when the air is calm and more predictable.

Found by accident. I'm old, retired, once an aviator - but not much of a one in comparison... but I've been around a lot of them. This story is.. incredible. What else to say? I love his life now, portrayed by this video, still flying (I flew a Piper Cub for enjoyment, not a Super Cub though) - cool truck. And an incredible attitude.
@@jamesm3471 Thanks George and Ruth. When I was young I used to tell my friends I could land the Cub on the roof of a K-Mart and survive, you could fly it so slow! But yeah, it was my favorite when I began. I wish I had one today.
The USCG is so well equipped and so fast to respond. Here in the UK most of our stuff is voluntary or contracted out. What an ordeal to survive. So glad he's fighting fit and settled into a great career. Such a worthwhile charity and a hell of a way to bring light to it. His truck is beautiful as well. He takes great care of his equipment. I hope it takes care of him, too!

Nah I disagree about one human being superior to any other. Your spirit it is that prevails regardless the holodeck sequence. A starving African child's spirit is not an inferior being to this man. These 'distinctions' R annoying. His spirit prevailed, glory to God. But superior? I must digress.
@@sylviasanchez3901 You put that starving African child into a fighter jet and see what kind of decisions he makes - SPOILER ALERT: he/she wont be starving anymore. You can't reduce EVERYTHING down to it's simplest form because you want to make a point about equity. You could make a point about opportunity...I'm sure there's a starving child in Africa (and many other places, not sure why you picked Africa...but I digress), that, given the opportunity and proper training, could pilot a fighter jet. Maybe that same kid would have lived through this same harrowing event - by luck or by absolute presence of mind...I'm sure there's one out there...surely. Unfortunately, not everyone has an opportunity to be a fighter pilot; if EVERYONE did have that opportunity, only a small percentage of them would be capable, and an even smaller percentage are going to excel. "Superiority" is a relative term - this man is SUPERIOR to said starving child, and a vast majority of the world's population, at piloting an aircraft...I know this much for certain.
A friend of mine in the South African Air Force had a similar experience ejecting out of a Mirage 111 in 1985. Also at about Mach 1.2. Both his legs suffered the same damage as yours, but he too, with a strong faith in God and a positive mindset, was back in the air in about 6 months.

What an incredible story of faith, mental fortitude & determination!!! Much respect to this gentleman & his unwillingness to give up despite the odds that were stacked against him
This is a leader and a mentor. Having to eject out of an aircraft is like one of the last thing you want to do. Making the right decision saved him, but didn’t save his WSO. To be thankful, recovered and still flying is a gift. The margins of safety are very slim. Teaching others is something that is valuable and enduring.
I was working EOR that night and my stomach fell when we were told you were not making it back to base. Also, my wife was lifeguard at the YMCA in town and watched you work hard at rehab to get back. Glad I came across this.
I watched a documentary about this year's ago and its nothing short of a miracle. A super sonic ejection at sealevel, the forces in that thick low altitude air at those speeds are literally mind bending. Surviving a super sonic ejection at 30k feet wouldn't be assured (surviving super sonic ejection at any altitude is impressive) and you would take a beating but a super sonic ejection at sealevel and surviving your odds of survival couldn't be more then just a few percent and the soft tissue and skeletal trauma would be enormous this man is truly a walking miracle to be alive.
Thanks for sharing your story! Too sad about your partner! I know things like that will always be in the back of your head, but you didn't give up! That's what makes this story so good!

When life slaps you in the face, throws you to your lowest low and there's nowhere to go, and still think yeah I gotta get this done. What an absolute legend
It's great to hear stories of people with a sound mind in all situations.
Thank you for your service. I've never listened to a more diligent, strong-willed, and prepared man. I am honored to call you a US airman. God bless you.
what a story this was. love the fact that you came back and flew for the usaf again after being nearly completely torn apart. absolutely incredible serious goosebumps at the end of this!
You rally round, give hope, and encouragement, leave no man behind.
The world needs inspiration like this.
Bravo Zulu.
Never could have said it better
I remember reading about this when it happened. I have often wondered what happened to him. Thanks for sharing. The part where he mentions the WSO's daughter...man, that got me.
God?????😅😮😂 Not so sure about that.....maybe Buddha was planning on returning him as a cow or monkey 🐒, but Christian god seemed to have dropped the ball 🏀😅😮😂
Yes! Jesus had plans to keep you alive. We don't understand these things but it's obvious. He also loves Dallas and we don't understand these things why does didn't make it but there's nothing we can say except God help us all
Holy cow… it’s great to see him looking so good telling this story… but it sounds like he’s lucky to have survived this experience.
It's a place of peace and pleasure, and like him, a downright awesome restoration!
im surprised he lived that really. So damn close
Wow, what a miraculous story. Good bless you and the rescue swimmer.
What a story! This aviator is such an inspiration. My heart goes out to the WSO and his family.
I had the privilege of meeting Capt. Udell when he was my pilot on a Southwest flight from Burbank to Phoenix. He was awesome and a nice gentleman.
I remember this vividly. My dad was a crew chief for F-15s at SJAFB
Me, too. I was an avionics maintainer in the Rockets when it happened.
Not that it matters but I was stationed at the shady j in the late 70s.
@@TheU-hv8qj I was the f-15
I am astounded at his will to live, to heal, to fly again. I am humbled and encouraged to be a better person. Thank you ever so much.
Honor, Determination, Resilience and Valor. This is a true Gladiator.

@@steveperreira5850 well said Sir, one of these days they will figure it out, my guess then unmanned jets run circles around our top fighters.

hey man, feel free to not answer - but what happened?
Brian, you're an absolute inspiration, a man who lives by the word of God, with absolute integrity and determination! This is an awesome story - thanks for sharing it sir! It's too bad that most people these days don't have half the integrity and faith in God as you do!

Thank you BRCC. I am familiar with Charlie's antics and a fan of Heather Lynn's, but this story pulled back the covers to let me see what real soldiers are made of. From the title, I knew it was going to be gruesome. Seeing you guys helping each other regain their manhood and humanity is incredible. God bless the men and women who face the dangers and carry out their missions so I can enjoy freedom is what it is truly about.
I believe God already blessed them that is why they are able to do and go through what they did. Men like Capt. UDELL are ought to be celebrated not those nit-wits from Hollywood wannabees.
This is one of the most incredible story I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. Your guardian Angel was definitely with you that night. You are a true inspiration. Thank you so much for sharing your story. Stay safe.
Incredible story thanks for putting this out, I live close to Seymour Johnson and never heard about this till now. Brian is a hero and the definition of never give up, I’m sad to hear that Dennis didn’t make it but happy his daughter was taken care of.
This is not the first time the story's been told (even on TH-cam), but this is a good one to be told and heard again.
Anyone who has flown a Cub for enjoyment has great taste in aircraft and is more than okay in my book!

Fighter pilots are next level human beings.
They definitely got balls of steel 💯
@@BlackRifleCoffeeCompany I hear they have to factor in those steel balls when they design the aircraft, or else the CG will be nose-heavy...
Coast Guard ASTs (rescue swimmers) are as well.
GOD BLESS THIS MAN. We are thankful we have REAL AMERICANS like him.
A friend of mine in the South African Air Force had a similar experience ejecting out of a Mirage 111 in 1985. Also at about Mach 1.2. Both his legs suffered the same damage as yours, but he too, with a strong faith in God and a positive mindset, was back in the air in about 6 months.

Amazing story! Also the production quality just makes the story even better!
