Terrapin Station, Mountain Jam, King Crimson, Tubular Bells, too many to list. Now I listen with an entirely different perspective. Almost 50 years ago, I was in a record store (yes, they only had vinyls), flipping through albums, when I saw this cover. I had a hunch that, with a cover like this, the music had to be something else. And it was. One of the best hunches I ever had.
As I read some of the comments here they certainly made me relate. I am now 73 years old, a lifelong guitarist and musician. Music was always the center of my universe since I was about 4 years old and my sister would bring home the old 45 RPM records. She would have me sit with her while we listened to this new kind of music called Rock and Roll. I played in my bands since age 14 and was considered a Hippie. I first heard King Crimson, and Greg Lake immediately when they released this incredible and awesome piece of work. I still have it in my old vinyl collection. I taught my eldest son to play guitar when he was 12 years old. He went on to become a rather famous guitarist and musician. His first group signed with Island Records in 2002, MTV video in the top 20, toured all over the US and Canada...Then he formed his own band, wrote all the songs, played guitar and sang. He named this group Jade Lemons and the Crimson Lust! So the legacy continues. Jade died April 6th 2016. My heart is broken forever, but he lives on in his music. They all do.

I cannot understand how the hell I've lived 50 years without hearing of this band? I'm having a complete discovery of King Crimson in all is iterations.... I stayed up until midnight last night, Christmas, listening to this entire album, and every live version I could find of this song. My Christmas present!
Don't feel too bad, I also waited 50 years to hear this whilst watching the film Children of Men. I can't believe my mother didn't own this album, her record collection was extensive yet I never recall this being played. Better late than never!

Is that the same lake that became Emerson lake and palmer? I never knew that but I did listen to King King crimson all the way back to 1970 I mean 1969 when I was only 11 years old I turned 12 in June of 69 so I might have been 12 I heard them on the radio from Roseville California listening to Sacramento AM radio. I also saw many UFOs on a regular basis flying over my home in Roseville next to Oakmont high School. Not kidding.@@Firemanrfdny
My grown kids disagree with me on any number of things, but they're united in awe of the music I introduced them to when they were little. I've still got the first release of this album on vinyl, and have always had killer sound systems...
My older brother had this lp, I was around 11 the first time I heard it. It was great then like it is today at 65. Such a beautiful song. It was great having an older brother that grew up in the 60s. I was exposed to such awesome music and then my music of the 70s. What a great time it was to grow up in.
Dans le même cas mais j’avais 14 ans et mon frère avait acheté le vinyl ; je regarde la pochette avec tellement de tendresse pour ces merveilleux souvenirs 🙏

King Crimson reminds of my Dad. He used to play all the best progressive music back in the day. Oh where has the creativity gone. He really knew his music. I'm 60 now and my Dad passed a couple years ago. This song brings back the best memories. Thanks Dad, and thanks King Crimson.
My earliest memory is this album artwork and music. My mom would get concerned as I stared at the album cover and listen to it over and over. This was around 1976 I was 4
I love king Crimson, especially this song. I remember using it for a D&D inspiration, the purple piper was a maddened bard, the black queen an evil necromancer, the crimson king a violent tyrant, the Gardener an execution, the patterned juggler juggled skulls and the yellow jester a puppeteer using creepy marionettes. It is one of my favourite songs, and the faces on the players when it clicked were gold
It miiiight be inspiring something in my D&D campaign which I miiight be scripting right now while listening to this. Going a totally different route to things than you did here, though I do like it!

Rest in peace, Ian McDonald. Thank you for this masterpiece and a few others, written so early in your life (often with lyrics by Peter Sinfield). Great arranger, keyboard player, flautist, saxophonist, guitar player, singer... What a talent !
@@christopheraliaga-kelly6254 : I know this .. except it's not "Philip", it is Peter Sinfield who wrote the lyrics, like many for KC and ELP - and you don't disappoint me. I should have said "composed" because I was thinking mainly about the music - which is what matters first.

What blows me away the most is that the fact this song/album was made in *1969* . It feels so timeless and modern comparing to other songs in the late 60’s. Imo, this is truly one of the best albums ever.
@@user-sf4fy8bq1h Considering dark side of the moon wouldn’t come out until half a decade later, this is pretty innovative for its time, which is what the guy is trying to say
The reality: Island-Atlantic owned the rights to these early albums. Fripp probably had to buy the rights back from them. People are way too quick to put the blame on the artists, but the standard for signing on a record label, was to give the rights to their songs to the company. You had to hold out, and insist on retaining the rights, like Ray Charles did. But most bands didn't, they were just excited to get a record deal, and would do whatever, not knowing until later how they had been screwed.
The decay of trusted institutions, isolation, despair, and alienation, all of it against the backdrop of the Vietnam war. Sinfield loved (and still does) metaphors. Cheers!
Greg Lake in this band and later ELP, was simply the voice of prog rock. A baritone voice that unexpectedly came out of an innocent looking face. His voice multi tracked in the Court of the Crimson King and later Lucky Man are timeless.
If you want to learn about how orchestral structure and changing time signatures can be used in rock music this is a complete study guide in album form!!!! A masterpiece!!
their whole genre is interesting, it’s not even really rock, it’s kinda more like experimental jazz. but yea i get what you mean, the way this entire album was composed was nothing more than a work of magic
I was 16 to 17 yrs old when I first heard King Crimson. Its a lost time in my life, that music kind of brings me back to those days. A confusing time being a teen ager worried about going to Viet Nam, and all the young people at the time thinking they could change the world. Thanks for the memories.
While I did find this song because of JoJo, I think it's a masterclass in ambience. It creates a feeling of dread that's incredibly hard to recreate, but it doesn't succumb to dissonance to achieve that. It's a beautiful piece which brings to mind feelings of grimdark fantasy.
It's literally the only reason why the dark tower exists, this song is pure lovecraftian horror the crimson king is an eregore a dark thought dreamt one day. A being of pure malice and agony, we've been in his court a long time and there is no way out. I also love how childish this song is its like a lullaby. It's so insulting to the listener but that's like my favorite thing about the song. Sorry I don't mean to dump all this on you but I truly believe this is one of the greatest songs ever written. I would honestly love if he was used in a more serious man very effective villain, don't get me wrong I love him in Jojo buy he is but a man, the real crimson king is a horrid manifestation. If we were to make an arc out of this album the only people capable of fighting against him would be the schizoid man and the moon child but that's like some really nerdy shit that I don't think anyone would take seriously lmao
@@sad-death I missed this entirely, I'm not really into KC but this song is legendary for prog rock itself and the whole movement, like Genesis and Yes, the earliest British prog, industrial was born through these songs, and ppl didn't even have categories defined yet for these sounds, so they broke them down in chord structures, beats, and instruments, ppl are so stupid with their boxing in and labeling of things, so they have to categorize everything, this album was known to be the most confusing for those types of people, kind of like mr bungle came out of no where, even early rap music was the same, they defied defining. So reading your comment, and others finding this material by JoJo and other quotes in the comments tells me this generation gets it, although I never heard of JoJo 😂

Good music crosses all boundaries. Culture, race, nationality, language, it doesn't matter. I listen to tons of funk and soul music. We are all part of a huge family united by this wonderful music.
Seventy years old now. Bought this album with my pay from my paper-round in 1969. Amazing then and amazing now....not aged at all, unlike yours truly! I regard myself as the luckiest generation when it comes to iconic music. A teenager in the 60s when everything was innovative; most since has been derivative (but some pretty good, nevertheless!). I was blessed to be born when I was and still going strong, with this sort of quality available to play and play and play.
i was 17 when I was in Hyde Park and saw and heard them for the first time live. They were great, What you said about the time and the music is so true.
60's were a terrible decade of Rock music. Beatles, Kinks and Stones aside. The prog rock and folk rock of the sixties was just terrible. Truly the worst decade of music for the twentieth century. But I get it, doesnt matter how bad it is, if you grew up with it, its going to be your jam.
I intentionally refrain from listening to this for months so that when I do hear it, it's fresh and feels like a special occasion. This song does something to me.
Yeah, I listened to it a lot around 6 moths ago so I got tired of it, but listening to it again it's like coming back home knowing there's a deliciuos meal waiting for you
Greg Lake had one of the best singing voices and was a great bassist and guitar player. I don't think he got enough praise for this. He had a fair amount of work to do in this band and ELP.
Lol! When ELP's "Pictures at an Exhibition" was released, I played it all the time and very, very loud and one day I said to my dad, "Isn't it incredible" and he said, "Yes dear, I've heard it before" and I said "You have" and he said "it's an adaption of Russian composer Mussorgsky's - Pictures at an Exhibition" and I said "WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?"😮 Lol! It's still great, I love it!🎵I still have the album along w/this one (KC).
Saw Cal jam as well. Some of the greatest British Rock bands played there. ELP, Sabbath, Purple, as well as American bands like The Eagles and such. I must say that British Rockers from the 70’s BLEW AWAY American Rock bands. A different level of standard and excellence.
“Lullabies in an ancient tongue…” what an image- they blew my mind…then and now. Me too 18 and now 65 - I am huge fan. Wonderful! Brings back many memories…takes you right back…
Indeed. They were always a tad edgy about TH-cam and other platforms. However, when my local pub's jukebox included this album and others, you better believe I was playing them. :-)
Imagine you're in your 20's and make an album even 50 years after people are still gonna think was quite ahead of its time. That's what King Crimson did.
It's almost too much to wrap your head around, isn't it? This song is so incredible that I barely have the words. The way it slows down and speeds up just adds to its immense majesty. And the lyrics are sensational. Wow, what a band!
I know nothing about this band, this album, this song. I randomly clicked on it and found something rivalling the greatness of pink Floyd and this is amazing. Weirdly nostalgic and haunting, it has a strange aura but I love it.
i am amazed at how unique this song is.they basically build a dark fantasy world in a 10 minute song better than most series can do in 100 episodes. I bought this album in 1969 because of the cover and and since then I have played it constantly because of the music. Robert Fripp's guitar playing, Greg Lake's singing, Ian Mcdonald's musical genius, and Pete Sinfield's lyrics. 'Epitaph' is one of the best tracks on any album, ever

The mellotron played by this and other bands like Moody Blues and Beatles is a very unique instrument. The choir softly sing
Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
For the court of the crimson king

The black queen chants
The funeral march
The cracked brass bells will ring
To summon back the fire witch
To the court of the crimson king
The gardener plants an evergreen
Whilst trampling on a flower
I chase the wind of a prism ship
To taste the sweet and sour
The pattern juggler lifts his hand
The orchestra begin
As slowly turns the grinding wheel
In the court of the crimson king
On soft gray mornings widows cry
The wise men share a joke
I run to grasp divining signs
To satisfy the hoax
The yellow jester does not play
But gentle pulls the strings
And smiles as the puppets dance
In the court of the crimson king

All it took was a world wide pandemic to get Fripp to release these songs.
Cheers!

The ambience, the lyrics and the dark yet slightly heavenly choir really makes this one of my favourite songs.
All jojo memes aside araki has great taste and i am greatful to him for bringing my attention to old western music.

Greg Lake was in two of the greatest progressive rock bands of all time.

Bill Bruford was in more than that....

It was 1977 when i first met this dude in West Virginia at a glass plant..My neighbor said that I had to meet him because he was into music like i was..So began my thirty year epic journey of making music with a little band called Acrylic Prism..I mention this because we both had a love for King Crimson and Robert Fripp..Kevin just recently passed at the age of 63. He was the only constant through the bands history..I guess that when there was music to be played..Acrylic Prism would appear to play it .Rest in peace my friend..

When I was a 15 year old kid, I would sleep with a radio on. One night I woke up to the sound of this song playing…. And it was so amazing, I thought to myself, who and what is that. I bought the album, and the rest is history. You have no idea, the mystical, magical event that it was to me.
I do know, i found king crimson and YES in a similar fashion at a similar age, there is nothing more amazing and beautiful. Im 50 now when i close my eyes for the last time on this earth i hope they open again in the court of the crimson king.
Me too! I actually learned to play flute because of this band.

My dad loved King Crimson and had this album. I remember him playing it over and over in a small house in Cambridge, Massachusetts over 50 years ago just like it was yesterday. I remember every nuance and lyric. I miss you dad. ❤

music is a powerful force! my dad was playing elton johns yellow brick road album in the early 80s one day and i’ll never forget watching him sit cross legged in front of his hi-fi enjoying the music.

A song that captures the imagination of both the "Crimson" and the listener. Robert Fripp is a musical genius and Greg Lake brings it all home with his breathtaking vocals. King Crimson was a band that explored all types of the music genre. Again, this song is such a joy to listen to.

You forgot to mentioned Giles Drumming. Giles is way ahead of his time. Just take a listen at 2:20. Its a masterpiece. His drumming on Second Album is good too.
He's in the same league as Bonham and Baker.
The mellotron played by this and other bands like Moody Blues and Beatles is a very unique instrument. Not amazing by today's standards of electronic instruments but worth noting that it was a basic tape machine with multi-tracks to emulate a flute, violin and cello. Creating hauntingly beautiful sounds.
@@daghetto101 I've always thought his drumming on this album and In the Wake of Poseidon was exceptional. I always have to play air drums when I listen to ITWOP.
