  • What does The Scream sound like? Shawn talked about listening to paintings to guide your productions, acoustic guitars as synths, how to record Adele and not f#$% up, room mics on vocals, and how to match real EQs to plugins like a rocket scientist. My guest today is Shawn Everett a six-time Grammy-winning music engineer and producer originally from Canada and now in Los Angeles whose credits include Alabama Shakes, Kacey Musgraves, The War on Drugs, The Killers, Weezer, Local Natives, and Julian Casablancas to name a few.
Shawn has previously been a guest on episodes RSR137 and RSR270 when we talked with Shawn about his background and starting his studio in LA, and engineering and mixing Sound & Color by the Alabama Shakes.
Today we will talk more about recording and mixing and find out what's new at Shawn’s studio. Thanks to Lysee and Vanpelt Management for helping to set up this interview.

Great great conversation! Love it. Is there any way in future - if it feels appropriate - to cover some of the professional, I suppose more mundane aspects of a Producer's career or process? For example; hearing about how projects are planned, how pre-production is done and most interestingly to me personally - how the money / fee side of things gets worked out? In this interview I loved hearing about Shawn taking the artist around museums for a few days... my question is; was this part of the deal? Was Shawn in effect, charging for this part of the process? If so, how did this get figured out? It might be too confidential, crass or just not what you want to cover but as a Producer myself who loves hearing about how the A listers work, this would be really cool stuff to know and nobody seems to talk about it. Thanks again for sharing such great conversations!

Great questions and I will try to ask in the future. Realistically I would assume that going to a museum with the artist is not itemized in the budget. In fact this is where the power of flat rates comes in helpful because it allows you to do whatever you need to get the job done properly. You might find Brian Hood helpful with general tips and ideas for pricing and figuring out your flat rates: 6figurecreative.com/resources/

Hey thanks!! I’m trying not to interrupt guests too much (which is ridiculously hard to do especially over Zoom)
