I'd always assumed this was a very produced, very electronic track. Absolutely wild that it's A. mostly acoustic/electro-acoustic instruments and B. apparently just played live?
Fascinating. Loved learning about Shawn's explorative and unique process and hunt to capture wholly unique tones. What's the music track playing at the beginning of this video?
When he uses headphones as mics how does he get the signal into pro tools? Are the headphones connected to tape machine which is attached to his apogee? Fire techniques in this video
Can someone explain how he has those Master Tracks routed? How is m1 (for example) getting any input when the instruments are routed to Bus 41-42. And why/how is m1 routed back into 41-42. Is there an advantage to that?
m1 is a master fader track that is affecting everything going into the "MASTER IN 1" aux. you can see he's doing more processing on it, and padding the level by a couple of dB.
@@nath7185 I see.. not a protools user so help me out, where does m1 get its inputs? I see that its output is going to MASTER IN 1, but how does it know which channels are actually going there? Thank you for the reply!
@@eliaspappas8891 in protools, a master fader track doesn’t have a traditional input/output as other tracks do. you set which bus you want it to affect, and it will affect everything on that bus before it gets to “MASTER IN 1”. hope that makes sense.
Hi there! Shawn ended up using our Pultec plugins to shape the overall tone and master bus of this record. Check around the 12 minute mark for his explanation.
Shawn is the best, love his work! Also, I had no clue that he did this album! One of my favorites.
I'm off to listen to the album, thanks so much for this amazing video and great recommendation!!
Of course! We couldn't believe the textures he was capturing and creating. Especially how he recorded the vocals.
This is fascinating. The taping the tiny mic to the singers neck is so whacky and actually sounds super cool in the mix.
9:46 I always assumed most of the drums on this were electronic, that's amazing.
I’d love a video like this for every track. Such an incredible album.

Love it. ty.
wow! I always wondered how this song was recorded.
Best song on the record💜
I loved this freaky mix especially from this song
gotta love the crushed ns10 speaker. what a G
actually genius production and engineering wow
One of the standout tracks on the record for me - such an intense mood. Such a treat to see how it was produced and how quirky the process was
Love this album, thanks!! Is there any more mixing videos from this album?
Bro i love how this is filmed , Amazing
okay bro is dialed in, this is amazing
Amazing video ! He is a genius !!!

THE BEST
12:53 May I ask about the Pultec plugin and what it's achieving on the vocal here? Thank you!
He is basically creating a LoFi effect by attenuating (cutting) 10k quite heavily! The vocal has this darker tone to it as a result.
@@apogeedigital Thank you so much! This helps me a lot!
Ok so all that talking and I still was not prepared for the outcome. Those drums are rather unique. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
It scares me how much I look like this guy.
Whats the track in the background?
that's so cool
Using contact mic with flanger slowed down on tape machine. Making feedback loop int the mixing desk
james is such a good player

So great to have such Hi-Fi converters when recording such lo-fi music. 😂😂😂
Shawn is the Joe Meek of the 21st century
Bet he's got a Joe Meek reverb

what is the song running in the background in the first couple of minutes?
Was wondering that myself presumed it was a Big Thief track but couldnt find anything
What kind of contact mics?
ZEPPELIN DESIGN LABS CORTADO MKIII CONTACT MICROPHONE, just my guess from googling/pausing the screen when he holds it up!
“I taped headphones around her neck, so it was actually taped onto her throat” 🤯
Did I overlook the apogee plugins used?

Beeyouteefull❤️
cookieeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!
i don't even know like how do you even use a contact mic for the bass DI??
Is your name Paolo
I think he is using DI here to mean not going through the tape machine maybe?
If you're Recording Engineer shows up looking like this you're guaranteed a mid-level hit, probably 6.8 Pitchfork score as well.
?? This album is pretty universally loved, pitchfork even gave it a 9. Also you spelled ‘your’ wrong
Love the album and Shawn but this made me laugh out loud
omg
He couldn't come in on Thursday because his image was in the wash.
im sure this guy is great and i loved the album, but wasnt the number one complaint the mixing? its kinda all over the place
Interesting way to portray your personality through appearance
The saying isn't "buckle down", it's "knuckle down".
