    Woodturning - Can Pine Be Beautiful (Green Turned Pine)
    In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a freshly cut scott's pine log into a natural edge vessel
    when woodturning a piece like i find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. big log to bowl (little bowl) but i find removing the wood in layers allows me to find the best possible shape.
    If you find these videos entertaining I’d appreciate you hitting the like button and if you'd like to see more from me you can simply click the subscribe button.

    Sometimes the way you mount things on the lathe I think “Oh No. That’s gonna hurt.” Or “That’s not gonna turn out right.” But it ends up being beautiful every time.
    Then again I’ve been mounted in some ways that I didn’t think were a good idea but I always ended up enjoying myself. 🤷🏼‍♀️

      I'll rather hear the machine mixed with the wood scraping sound, is much more immersive.
      As a person who also enjoy working with my hands, is more satisfying.
      Question: Why not using the sandpaper with a sponge, won't sit better to the surfaces?
      By the way: Subscribed.

    The end result is stunning! I'm curious though, since this is green wood, what will prevent cracking, warping, splitting as it dries?

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Thanks for watching Buck. Iv gone into depth on this in a few other comments but in a very simplistic explanation, turning green wood to its final shape without cracking it a lot down to making sure the walls are even thickness throughout and making them thin helps a great deal too this one was around 3-4mm
      I don’t try to avoid warping in my work as I feel the warp adds a more natural look to this finish piece.
      The end pictures on this video were take. After the piece had fully dried (as all my green turned videos do) and as you can see the piece didn’t warp a great deal with I thought was a bit of a shame.
      As I say iv gone into more depth in reply to some of the other comments asking the same thing so feel free to browse them.
      Any questions just ask

      @@BuckHelton my brother has attempted turning bowls into a rough shape, putting them into brown paper bags fully submerged in their own chips/shavings, and leaving them for weeks. After that, he digs em out, dusts em off, and puts a finishing pass on them. He has been successful, but we agree it might have something to do with climate. We live in oklahoma, and the humidity stays moderately high year round.

    • @portbogie2865
      @portbogie2865 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will warp and crack as it dries. That's why you would normally rough turn a green project, shelve it to dry, and then finish the turning after you fill or stabilize any cracks.

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The end shots were takes after the piece dried.. I turn over 3000 green turned bowls per year. Twice turned bowls are of course one way to turn bowls and the best method for beginners. but green turned items.. as in turned from start to finish while the wood is green.. are a much more advanced method of turning. Sounds like you should ask a few questions portbogie, you might learn something 😆

    • @JackMackWoodturning

      Hi Peeler. The pine tree was felled in the summer months, meaning that the bark was wet and the bond between the bark and the wood very weak.

    It is pretty and all, but after time, did it misshape and crack? Obviously, green pine is very wet. Love the look of the final product. Love turning green wood, but pine usually splits and cracks pretty easy as it dries. Does your wax blend slow it enough to not misshape and crack?

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi DWL. The piece didn’t crack. Well it hasn’t yet. It is more to do with turning even and thin walls so the tension is more evenly distributed. Thanks for watching 😉👍🏻

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, no the wax doesn’t slow down drying. Cracks are cause by tension in the wood.. if you eliminate uneven tension you’ll eliminate the potential for cracks, regardless of the wood type. Hope that helps. 👍🏻

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks James. In my experience they don’t move much at all, when turning a green bowl consistent wall thickness is key ( sorry if you already know this) and that goes for the base too. Also the grain orientation will play a part too.
      In my production work I turn green bowls to about 4-5mm wall thickness ( you can see this in my video “green turned bowls”) I then leave them to dry for 7-14 days depending on the season, I then sand and finish then i true up the bottom and remove the tennon. In the video you’ll see that when I set the tennon I recess it into the bottom of the bowl.. this gives my plenty stock on the base rim to turn away while trying up.
      There are so many ways to skin this cat, this is just the way iv developed to work best for me.

      Making pretty funnels 🤣🤣
      I’d say go for it. Big time, try to go as thin as you can to learn the sound and the feel, you know it just before you go through. Always a second too late. 🤣
      Also my advice would be to just make shavings.. all too often people step up to the lathe determined to make a “thing”
      And then we make mistakes and never truly learn why.
      I’ say buy a full tree freshly felled and just aim for shavings (very useful in the garden and compost remember 🤣) and you “feel” for turning will multiply more than you ever expected.
      Then you can step up to that lathe to make a “something” and really enjoy it.
      Just my 2p 😊

      It’s sold by Axminster tools and made by some random manufacturer in Taiwan. It’s a very very poor lathe for the money they now charge for it. The lathe I have is only 50% the original lathe I bought as iv had to change and fix so many broken parts. I’d personally avoid buying the machines they put their stickers on and I’d certainly not recommend them to others.
      If you want to spend over 3,000 on a lathe vicmarc or Laguna would be a much better place to start.

      @@JackMackWoodturning Hey, thank you for taking the time to respond to my question. I have a 50 year old Rockwell Lathe that I bought used in 1984. I am about to retire and want to upgrade so I can have some fun turning in retirement. I would like not to have to spend 3K on a new lathe. Is there anything out there that you might recommend? I definitely want the chuck capability on head and tail stock. Most lathes I look at on line are short beds. I also want to be able to turn longer stock. Thanks. By the way, your work is amazing.

    Nice carving! I loved how it turned out!
    I do have a question though. In multiple points in the video, it seemed that the log was skipping a bit in the rotation, like it wasn't one consistent shot of you carving, even though the wood shaving stream looked consistent. Was is cut up for any reason? It just got more distracting as time went on as it kept on happening, so I just wanted to ask.

      Hey. I hear this question a lot from people nee to woodturning videos.
      The distortion you seeing is some strange marriage between frame rate of the camera (60FPS) and the lathe speed (normally around 1200 RPM) then when a clip is sped up to various speeds the spinning work piece can look like it’s slowly turning backwards, or standing still, or moving in staggered steps..
      In reality it’s just spinning towards me at 1200-2000 rpm. 🤙🏻
      Thanks for watching 😊

      @JackMackWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This piece was 4mm thick when finished. A piece of this thickness takes about 3 days to dry in a warm room. I made this months ago and it never cracked. The key to this is even wall thickness 😊👍🏻

      @@JackMackWoodturning I have done wood working as a hobby for 30+ years but not turning. You never know where wood has stress until you cut/shape it even after it is dried. You take your piece and you take your chances. For glue ups you run parallel boards in an alternating pattern like waves to avoid cupping. Burls have multiple grains going on all directions and I always wondered why some of them don't come apart during turning. It's not like you use scrapers on them. Thanks for responding.

    Will green wood crack over time, also is pine sappy, thus harder to work with???

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Green wood will shrink/contract while drying… cracking is a function tension. When you remove wood from a bowl/vase/vessel you are removing the potential for tension,.
      This is why the key to green turned bowls not cracking is even wall thickness but also why generally thinner is better.
      It allows the remaining wood to warp rather than crack. As less tension is acting upon it but also because a thinner wall is a more elastic wall.
      Wood movement is a incredibly extensive topic that could take me all day to explain in depth and there’s very few hard and fast rules the apply 100% of the time.
      I’m always happy to answer any questions you may have though.

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To your other question… I don’t find it to be too sappy, I turn a lot of cherry and that stuff oozes “tree blood” (never really causes a problem as it most often in the most outer layers of the sap wood/just under the bark.
      Pine is just a pig to turn because the end grain LOVES to tear out, even with super sharp tools and lots of experience I still struggled with this piece. I’m sure there is a nack to it but I hardly ever turn it so I doubt il ever really crack it.
      As ever Tanna, thanks for watching and feel free to blast any questions my way.
