    While you were explaining MU-MIMO, you left out one crucial bit of information: you need client support as well! Just because you have a 4x4:4 MU-MIMO AP (wave 2) does NOT mean that you see any benefit from it if your clients are older 802.11ac (wave 1) devices. You need at least two wave 2 clients on the network, doing stuff, to see any benefit.

    • @Charliebcas
      @Charliebcas 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lagittaja actually ubiquiti states there's only a 20% increase in throughput by using Wave1 clients.

    • @Lagittaja
      @Lagittaja 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carlos E. Ballen C. That's not because of 802.11ac wave 1 vs. wave 2.
      But more because of higher processing power.
      Edit: As in that 20% increase in throughout is Pro vs HD and the explanation there is higher processing power of the HD in some obscure edge case. The explanation Chris was doing is just about the MU-MIMO feature itself as was my comment.

    Thanks very much for this video. I didn't know this existed. I manage the wireless at my church and we have over 100 devices in the sanctuary on a Sunday. We quickly oversubscribed a Unifi AP-LR so I added a second unit and I'm pretty sure we are overloading both of those. I was going to add a third device to cope with the volume however this HD device sounds perfect. I would only need one access point and can manage double the congregation. Sweet.
    Love your videos.

    I installed a UAP-AC-HD yesterday and discovered something about getting it adopted. I first tried to set the inform with the Google discovery app and that did not work. Next used SSH and set-inform from the CLI. That did not seem to work either. After using the UniFi chat support I found that you need to run the set-inform twice as you did in your video and then run it again twice after you click the adopt link in the controller. When I did that it way, it adopted as soon as I ran the second adopt command. It went from an hour of trying to get it to adopt to the fastest adoption I have seen. Might not ever work that way again, but it worked well this time.

    Re: box vs datasheet specs:
    2.4Ghz: that would be non-standard modulation e.g. 256QAM. 4x4:4 802.11n 40Mhz with 64QAM (2^6) gets you 600Mbps. If you increase it to 256QAM (2^8), you'll get 800Mbps. 6>8=+33.333% (8/6=1.333) so going from 64QAM to 256QAM basically gives one third more throughput.
    5Ghz: lack of DFS certification for 160Mhz channel width. 4x4:4 802.11ac 80Mhz gets you 1733Mbps. 1733*2 (eg. 80Mhz > 160Mhz) equals 3466Mbps which you'd get with 4x4:4 802.11ac 160Mhz.
    tl;dr The UAP-AC-HD supports those higher speeds but they are not enabled in firmware.
    So technically it's a 4Gbps or 4.2Gbps AP but for now "just" 2.3Gbps or 2.5Gbps AP, depending on how you count the 2.4Ghz speed (600M vs 800M).
    This also explains the box art changes on the newer units. Your unit says 4Gbps on the box while newer units (afaik) just say 2.5Gbps.

    It would be interesting to see if there is any difference in performance vs the Pro with multiple devices doing iPerf tests to different devices concurrently. It wouldn't take many to saturate the bandwidth and stress the APs that way.

  • @zapityzapzap
    @zapityzapzap 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Chris, it seems that some of the confusion with the MU-MIMI may be related to single device bandwidth versus aggregate bandwidth. Looks very similar in my mind to P25 Phase where the trunk channels operate at a 12000 bps rate on the infrastructure (AP) side and the subscriber unit at 6,000 bps due to the tdma operation.

      Depends which model you get and the settings you choose when setting it up.You want your access point on a channel no is either using or has not to much traffic on and in the setting it will tell you which channels have more people on it and as well devices.

      So the AC PRO or AC HD will do to get past the interference from all the low grade wireless neighbors near by.Make sure you your power is not on low or medium or auto and have it set to high.

    Hey Chris! Thanks for the quick overview of the UAP-AC-HD. My family and I own a campground and we are wanting to upgrade our equipment for next year. I have no previous experience managing and installing a WiFi Network so I am trying to gather as many resources as I can to learn. Our campground has 314 sites and we are a very seasonal. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, every single one of those sites are filled with families (3-4 per site on average) so we are looking to build something that can accommodate about 1250-1500 people at any given time. Do you think the UAP-AC-HD's are the way to go? Right now we are using older Ubiquiti equipment and it's just not doing the job. Any advice? If we decide to go with Ubiquiti I will make sure we use your affiliate links :)

    • @CrosstalkSolutions
      @CrosstalkSolutions  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The UAP-AC-HD is probably overkill - you may have 1200-1500 people during peak periods, but they're not close enough where they're going to be crammed into a single AP. If you estimate the number of people who will be in each AP's coverage zone, that will give you a better estimate of the type of AP you need - most likely you'll want the UAP-AC-PROs, or you could alternatively use the Mesh-Pros if they are directly exposed to the elements.

    • @mrtechbro123
      @mrtechbro123 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. So you don't think it would be necessary to have the HD's for something like our campground? The layout of the campground is just 1 big, straight plot of land in the shape of a line. We have 5 straight roads running from entrance all the way to the back of the park (if that gives you an idea of how it's organized) Even with all the interference from campers, buildings, trees, etc. you don't think that the HD's would be the safe option?

    Fror a true high-density deployment, how does Ubiquiti handle AP proximity and co-channel interference? I'm new to the Ubiquiti world and I'm curious to see how their APs/controller software handles this. Also, does Ubiquiti have any kind of rogue-ap mitigation technology? Thanks!

    • @CrosstalkSolutions
      @CrosstalkSolutions  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a lot that goes into properly sizing the deployment before the project starts and configuring the AP's after they have been physically installed. If you do both of those things right, you have built a good foundation for success. There are some rogue AP reports in UniFi, but I've never really investigated that.

    I saw someone say VHT80 setting gave more speed??

    • @jessica45qt1
      @jessica45qt1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It lets you run at a higher wifi speed but your devices might not run at that speed. Most people would have theres set to VHT20 or 40 and not the 80 one as many people have device with the slower wifi cards in there devices .But that's for the AC Band more but will run A and N as well devices. Now for the old devices on the 2G BAND will run on either HT20 or HT40.If your meshing access points you want the 2g set to transmit at medium Power level and the 5g set to transmit at a high power level.Also on the 2nd device and any access point after that make sure the setting meshing from other access points is checked and also make sure the access points aren't on the same channel so what you can do is set a channel for each one or keep in on auto.Currently i'm slowly adding more access points as of now i have 1 AC Hd access point and then a AC PRO access point and then a AC lite but that one is not meshed.Next Layout will be Two XG access points which handle more users and faster wifi output and handles 10 gigabit network support.I will use the Pro as a outside access point. and the 2 AC Hd access points will be meshed.

While our wifi coverage is great, I'm seeing issues with streaming handoff and wifi calling from my cell phone. I have the AP channels for both the 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz separated on different ends of each range and have tested for interference from neighboring networks. Am I missing something? Keep experimenting with AP placement and output power, and you'll find a setting that works. Also - depending on the size and construction of your home - try going with just 1 central UAP-AC-PRO. I have a single UAP-AC-LITE in my home, and it covers the whole house just fine.

Who is the poor schmuck who seems to call during every video :) And, What's your recommendation for a mesh network hard line connection point- UAP-AC-HD or the UAP-Mesh-Pro. It looks like the Pro has a longer range, but the HD should still crush it with the MU-MIMO, right?
