My bro-in-law is from Shymkent, Kazakhstan. He and my sister lived in Moscow back in 2006. My sister was working at the U.S. Embassy. My bro-in-law Erlan looks very Asian. He would take the Moscow Subway to work and often be bullied by Russian Skinheads. They called him “Chinese” and pulled their eyes back to make “slanty eyes”. Yeah they were total assholes. My bro-in-law just ignored them and quickly exited the train ASAP. They even started to approach him one day & get in his face. He stared them in the eyes & yelled out in PERFECT RUSSIAN, “Отвали! Если ты меня тронешь, я УБЬЮ ТЕБЯ!!! Back off! If you touch me, I WILL KILL YOU!!!” This caught these Slavic Punks off guard and they backed away like little wussies that they really were. They were probably so ignorant they couldn’t fathom an Asian dude speaking Russian!!! He and my sister put in a transfer for Turkey soon after. They absolutely loved Turkey. as someone who is half Armenian and half Russian that was born and spent half my childhood in Russia i’m so glad that someone like you, especially with a big following, is raising awareness towards this issue. i’ve came across such problems myself and saw my family go through it too growing up in Russia. i keep trying to spread awareness on this side of Russia because racism and xenophobia towards Kavkazis, indigenous peoples and Central Asians in Russia is a dark deeply integrated part of their culture that isn’t known that well by the west or even recognized enough by Russian people

The racial issue here is a bit broader than just "the Slavic majority oppressing non-Slavs." In reality, minorities often form tight ethnic communities and also oppress the atomized and inert Slavic majority. The real problem is that the authorities apply the principle of "divide and rule," dividing society into numerous warring groups.

" White Russian" is not a term used in Russia. Just like in Japan, there is no " Yellow Japanese". Or in Bolivia, "a Red Bolivian" . There is also no " Black Nigerian".
There is no such collocation as a " Belyy Russkiy" in the Russian language.
It is a term she will use in the ( N. American variety of the) English language to make you understand what goes on there,
The word in Russia is " a Slav". They use "Slav" in place of " White".
So, she experienced discrimination because she did not look Slavic.
It's just that explaining to an average Canadian or American what " Slavic" means will take a long lecture, this is why " White Russian" as a term is used ( when you talk to an Anglo-Saxon in English).

My family are Crimean Tatars who ran away from Crimea around the Russo-Ottoman and WW2 wars , we still have relatives back there and tried to visit as often as we could before 2014. We still keep our culture and language intact and have experienced no racism from the Turks which we coexisted for at least a hundred years now.
But I've always heard my family did get insults from Russians, in Crimea and in Turkey. However since I did not meet much of them, or usually I've met with Russians around my generation, I didn't experience any.
Until my own Uni prof, who is pro Z and a Crimean Russian, once told me to go back to Crimea because back there we lived lavish lives, opened restaurants and had free homes.
That moment my hands literally shook with anger and frustration. She was so oblivious to what all our families endured, in Turkey and in Crimea.
My grandpa never got treated for his leg, which he broke while fighting the Nazi occupants just because of his ethnicity.
I've lost multiple aunts and uncles to the famines that took place.
My family ran away to the closest place which they offered housing, with no money to their name and started a life here.
And there she was, asking why I didn't go back to live there? Why would I? It isn't safe to exist there, you are on a watchlist 24/7 if you talk about the betterment of your people.
But circling back to the point is, I've never called my own homeland homeland, I've never had a family home at where I've originated from and I will never feel at home no matter where I go. Of course I'm grateful for the country that I currently live in for giving me the same opportunities as the rest of the kids that are from here, they even let us made a city which most of us habits and feels as a sort of home.
But there she was, not even acknowledging how they systematically killed and starved my own people, telling me to go back and open a restaurant.
When I am done taking her classes, hopefully I will tell her to go back to Crimea to live her wet dream of Putin's rule.

idk who says that russia didn't do colonisation, but there wasn't really an ethnic/racial thing in the russian empire or the ussr, like how it was in the west. in the russian empire the discrimination or other bad things basically came from religion, basically russian empire was more similar to the countries from the medieval times, i would argue it is worse for the common people and maybe for religious minorities(not sure if being religious minority was better in the west), but better in the sense of racism thing. in the ussr there was no such preference for the religion and it was not a country made of serfs anymore and ethnic minority cultures even got promoted(it was not perfect and there were nuances but still). but then after the fall of the ussr(or maybe by the end of it? idk) not just the ussr, but probably the whole eastern europe became more more similar to the republican south of the USA in many aspects

At least in America you can acknowledge that America has a dark history and still has a chance at addressing this barbaric past and can move forward. Russia on the other hand cannot. The only way forward is to Balkanize Russia and to give their land back to the people it belongs to and for European Russia to integrate into the EU.

I admit I’m guilty of thinking that for a bit. I’m an American but I got so frustrated with the U.S. constantly being at war with other nations. It felt like we were just being war mongers and not fighting for anything meaningful. I briefly considered that Russia is actually the good guys in the Ukraine war and the U.S. was the one in the wrong for getting involved where we don’t belong. After looking at different perspectives for a while I’m starting to realize that the world is extremely complicated and looking for a “good country” is too simplistic. I now believe Ukrainians that are fighting for their home deserve a fighting chance, but I also believe America shouldn’t have expanded NATO to the point of threatening Russia. I still think that the U.S. being more neutral would result in less war, but I also consider that leaving Ukrainians without any aid would be awful too. It feels like it’s a loose-loose situation. I don’t know what the best moral answer is. Do we continue to provide aid in a war that could just drag on and get more people killed? Or do we make a compromise with Russia that may result in Ukrainians loosing their home? It’s something I’ve mulled over for a long time and still can’t see a practical solution. I also kinda wish the U.S. wasn’t such an influential country because then we wouldn’t even have to think about it, I know that sounds lazy and awful, but imagine if America was like Switzerland? Wouldn’t that be a better world?

And that you made this great vid about this topic, I genuienly thought you wouldn't touch it much, or touch it only slightly!
Also I absolutely love when russkie nazis hate on our existence in Russia and consider Sakha/Yakutia as some kind of separate country sometimes. But then being angry if there's any mention of separatism or autonomy from Moscow, and act like if we own them something. Meanwhile russkie in the past are who colonized natives, and took their resources, and burned their villages, etc. Manipulated natives into thinking they're their "saviours".

The Neo-Nazi problem still remains in Russia, the thing is that the Putin regime has put a lot of efforts to cover it up by doing some arrests and censorship here and there, by re-appropriating Soviet-era style rethoric to justify his imperialist invasion and by sanitizing some neo-nazi people and movements by rebranding them into something different (like the Russian National Front and the Russian Imperial Movement, who indistinguishable in their worldview from neo-nazis and are directly involved with neo-nazi individuals and groups outside of Russia, but they will use the same pretend governmental "anti-nazi" rethoric). What many people do not know is that the original nazi ideology in Germany was greatly influenced by the literature of reactionary Russian White Emigres that lived in Germany, especially through the propagation of the anti-semitic forgery of "The Protocols of The Elders of Zion". Many of this wealthy individuals funded the nazi party in Germany through an organization called the "Aufbau". Amongst this Emigres was Ivan Illyin, who described himself as a fascist and whose works are considered to have a great influence on Putin (who has praised and quoted Illyn a lot of times). Timothy Snider calls this hypocrisy of a fascist regime and ideology that denies itself and claims to be opposing fascism to be "schizo-fascism".
On the other hand, a few Russian neo-nazis have actually sided with Ukraine because they either believe Putin is a crypto-communist and/or that the defeat and collapse of the Russian Federation will grant them an opportunity to create a white-only ethnostate in European Russia. They are organized into the unit of the "Russian Volunteer Corps" that is integrated in the Ukrainian military. This is one of my few criticisms I have of the Ukrainian government, because it does nothing else but to fuel the narrative of "nazi Ukraine" by the Putin regime (also they are preety much insignificant in terms of their numbers).

He said that Russian society was always highly racist and being a diplomat of color came at great cost. He had to avoid social events and many public gatherings, for fear of a confrontation. He also told his son that it was practically impossible to date white Russian women. Later, when the Berlin Wall fell and Germany was again unified, one of the major problems were the hyper-racists and neo-Nazis that thrived in Communist East Germany.

When you see videos about "no racism in Russia" from an english speaker, there are usually 2 things to remember:
    1) they usually show Moscow and not some rural area
    2) they are black. Black people are mostly seen in Russia as exotic and people basically assume that you are a tourist or student. So they don't think that you are there for a long time and try to be more hospitable(to treat you like a guest).
I've seen it in my own grandma. She can be racist towards people from Central Asia(just because she doesn't know better), but when my mate from uni came to visit(he is black), she was very hospitable and then told me he is "a good boy" and hoped he would have a good time in Russia
Same thing with people from, for example, Japan. They could face some rude comments, but if they say they are from Japan and not, for example, far-east of Russia - they become "exotic" this very minute and everyone turns out to be extremely polite.
There is a way that russians call people - "ours". Basucally, that means someone from former USSR. If there is someone competing in the olympics from these countries, Russians usually root for them saying "they are ours". So people from Caucasus have a joke that "we are referred to as ours only when we perform at the Olympics. And all the other times we are treated as immigrants"

I am Turkish and any time I play a video game on a random server with random people I speak English. When I play a game called squad in EU region, sometimes the only servers with players are the Russian ones. I join and don't talk. Sometimes people talk to me in Russian and want me to respond, I say anything in English and they call me "Amerikanski". As if anyone who's not Russian is American or something. As if an American person on a different time line would stay up all night until morning so they can play on a Russian server with bunch of noobs. They all have English names, but the moment you say 2 words about the game because you are being asked, they make fun of you then kick you. It really doesn't make any sense to me how they label anyone as an "Amerikanski" it's a really dumb way of thinking. If I then say I am "Turkski" they make fun of me again. I have yet to see a normal response.

mate, I'm very sad that you came across this, I myself when I was still in school and played in War Z (like online zombie survival game) in the open world on a EU or US server and came across something like this! but even in those days, I found English-speaking friends when I'm from Russia myself. The main thing is to accept the fact that not everyone is like that, unfortunately in such games there is often such a contingent where they gather at a party with friends and jokes about everyone. Oh and i guess the key thing is 1) to try to talk to someone alone (not in the company of friends) and 2) start with like a funny chat with some jokes you know something chill friendly and not immediately say something like "where are you from"!) Just give him a friendly environment! Now I have some good friends in Tekken 8 and no one tells me anything bad, despite the fact that I am from Russia. I think we all want to make friends with someone from other countries to know more about each other :3 Peace!❤

Do you know in our Central Asian capitals all the property owners been Russians? It's weird but ethnic Kyrgyz people been renting those apartments from not even locals but Russian people been located from Kremlin to our capitals and big cities. Even know Russians that had stayed in Central Asia and didn't fly back to Russia in 1991 USSR collapse own most properties and they got the generational wealth because all the resources been handed to them. I myself live in Russia all my life (17 years) and all my life I noticed discrimination in my direction (it happened not by my will that I was born an Uzbek, and my father was Uzbek and my mother was Russian) in kindergarten I noticed that I was not treated very well ( at that time I had narrow eyes) I can live with it but still not pleasant but I passed kindergarten and went to school and there was a complete mess ( I was born in Russia) until my classmates found out that I was almost not Russian ( I was born in Russia) I started to receive insults from my classmates in my address I was surprised, I was surprised that people who were smiling at me a couple of days ago were saying that I was an immigrant and should leave, that I was a disgrace. I have said many times that I was born here and I am officially a Formerly, even my teachers told me, that they don't treat me and my nation very well Teachers used to lower my grades and even yell at me, which made me not study, get upset and skip school, which made them despise me even more and tell me what a bad person I am, but that lasted until 6th grade, after that they started treating me better. but also with contempt, but I slipped to terrible grades and forgot about school I told my parents, but there was nothing I could do about it ( in life I also face this I communicate well with people but when I say who I am by nation I get goosebumps ) no matter what anyone says but the nation in Russia is treated badly to put it mildly )
I love my country but it doesn't love me. I want to leave here.

It was bad in the 80's, our xenophobia goes back even before the USSR and race and ethnicity was always part of our propaganda, including denying that fact and distracting by using whataboutism and pointing to America... I grew up doing this myself until I saw the world and learned the truth.
It's hard to express how fleeting Russian freedom was after the Berlin wall fell and the iron curtain finally lifted and the internet came and freed everyone for a brief decade or so between ~1995-2006. As soon as the Russian government started massively profiting off of the internet and cracking down on domestic dissent, we've only been downhill and by ~2016 Russia is already a cynical mess with a new digital iron curtain. It's no longer as simple as picking any VPN and you're fine, year after year Russian law tightens government control of ISPs and now in 2024 it's a mostly insular digital stew of ignorance, ultra-nationalistic pride, ignorance, and despair. Russians that know the truth feel crushed by reality and how much of the world hates them right now. It's bad... I'm genuinely afraid of how much blood Moscow is willing to spill for "Russian legacy" and what they're doing to Russian society and how it will impact generations. This level of violence and dishonesty is a living nightmare, I'm ashamed of the Russian side of my family.

I had a bunch of jobs here and friends and I can say that a lot of people look like they are literally dying inside, every time I take a metro and look at the people I get a bit scared for them, thinking that there some robots.
