I love the fact that you emphasized on animating straight away, that is truly when you feel the animation. I respect your details to traditional 2d animation
what I like about Iso's work is how he packs so much subtle movements without disrupting the visual flow, he really makes full use of his keys that it rarely needs inbetweens, truly a master of visual flow and a legend among animators
A two part breakdown of Mitsuo Iso techs? Is it Christmas already? In all seriousness, this is pretty grand so far! Seems like weight and spatial awareness heavily contribute to selling impacts. It's one thing to say it but another to fully understand it. Congrats on the Bloop Partnership and see you in Part 2!
Yeah, throughout the video, Whimshurst went through and was mainly emphasizing the technicality in which Iso had brought behind the fight. He'd also stated that Iso worked with other animators in case you missed that part. 5:45 : ^ )
It would be very interesting to see a sakuga study on Yutaka Nakamura, the guy has done some of the most impressive fight scenes in anime, his style is very fluid and action packed.
Good video. I wouldn't agree that animating straight ahead always gives a result with more character. Seems like different preferences suit different animators, those who can see the scene in their mind from the start vs those who need the key poses for guidance but allow spontaneity to occur along the way.
I love how he employs these techniques, not just that he uses them. everything about this fight feels logical and well paced. example: 6:15 unit 02 has just committed to a massive swing, one which Iso made sure to animate, leaving itself open for an attack. and immediately as she stumbles to compensate for the weight one of the Eva series tries to capitalize. its not just her competence thats on display its her attacker's as well.
Hello, I have a question! I'd like to learn Japanese animations. I'm very new to this. I've tried looking on reddit for suggestions and previously answered questions said to look at western animations. However, Japanese animation is nothing like western animation. There is clearly a difference in principals. So I'd like to learn animation as an animator would in Japan! Do you have any reading material you can suggest to a beginner? I can read Japanese to some level so Japanese books are fine. Thank you!
Guys, if you didn't see it, they're doing a colab between Evangelion and Tower of Fantasy. The mechs move like they're 5 feet tall and have no weight. I'm livid.
Great analysis! Iso is the best among the best . Just a info: the segment at 5:55 was animated by Nobutoshi Ogura 小倉 陳利 (sakugabooru.com/post/show/17079)
10:00 With such a scene, it would be beneficial to film 2 actors duking it out for real, to get the kinematics down. (Especially the parts outside of the frame that influence the things in frame) Either that, or you need to have a lot of expierience with this sort of thing. Really like you analysis. But TH-cam algorithm is strange at times. Why do I see this only now? The mass/inertia aspect is something people often forget. Like when you watch MMD dance videos for example, the characters often don't show intertia, which looks fake and wrong. I think, even a comic artist should know about animation concepts, to make action shots look exciting and grounded in reality.
my one gripe with the eva 02 battle is that they had to change her design a bit like making her way thinner and she has shorter shoulder pylons, i know why they did it, but it's really jarring if you watch this scene right after watching eva 02's battles in the show
Mobi while he doesn't do the traditional keyframe-inbetween workflow, there's still script, storyboard and layout drawings that keeps the managers up to date with with what to expect. Not to mention that he has a reputation of both his skill and his method which would supress any lingering anxiety even further. So my guess is that he wasn't that much of a source for worry.
I'm late to the party but yeah that's pretty weird even though there is some very brief live action scenes near the end, and even the fact that he says that it's a "spin-off" of the main series and he recommands us to watch it like, totally out of context ? Maybe I just heard the wrong things and misinterpreted them but yeah it's weird
It's an odd question, but you can watch my catalogue of films, commissions and collaborations. I have a playlist of 24 videos here on TH-cam, and I have over 15 case studies on my website www.howardwimshurst.com/case-studies which shows how international clients have hired me to find creative solutions for their animation projects. One of the innovations that has been very popular with my clients is how I integrate 2d animation with live action footage.

Around 5mn, as the eva is trying is swing the weapon, i find the jiggly back and forth motion of the hips incredible

As I watched the trailer and clips of evangelion I was surprised how they animated such complex structures so ebautifully that too...
Without CGI?
Most important thing to keep in mind when animating a massive "creature" is it's*weight*. Also the camera shake adds energy to the animation.

Thanks dude, I agree that understanding it is a different dimension to just being told it by someone.
Such a quality and distinct content! Keep up the good work, man!
Glad someone did this because this movie's animation blew me away.
You can use QuickTime for animation videos and use the < > keys to see it frame by frame. not sure if u knew
nice! for both mac and windows? the shortcuts, I mean
I'm pretty sure, that or arrow keys
SwimnBird You're right. Mine is the Arrow Keys. I'm using Mac btw, that's why I asked.
Awesome >:)
SwimnBird Yeah, man. Thanks a bunch!
Love it, hopefully more Eva related videos!!
The whole battle was not made by only one Mitsuo Iso. There were also Takeshi Honda, You Yoshinari and Masahiro Ando.
I wouldn't be surprised, they are all amazing artists and on a project like this it is very likely that their works overlap

Fabrizio Yes, he should do a video about Hideaki Anno too
Animator in development & Sakuga Goon dropping in! You got an extra sub dude
thanks man, welcome
3:57 *Yet?!!* My guy's trying to kill us all.
Don't act all surprised when the giant aliens start popping up...
>end of eva is a spinoff
triggered
"animated live action"

It isnt a spin off-- it the ending for the Anime series. They blew their budget so had to do a movie
I love how he employs these techniques, not just that he uses them. everything about this fight feels logical and well paced.

I really just came from your Naruto animation video. Wow, this is underrated.
Finally...Sakuga!!
Evangelion is one of my favourite animes❤️😭

I don't know any book but there's a YT channel/community called Striving For Animation that is about learning the Japanese method of animation.
Try striving for animation and Howards sakuga studies

amazing
pretty coo
The sense of scale and movement of mass explained here is also the reason Pacific Rim was great and Pacific Rim 2 was shit.
Made the 1K like.
They look so serious compared to other mecha stuff
cuz there biological creatures
Do one on Yutaka Nakamura please. :D
gathering material on him :)
what do you mean by animating on the 2's or 3's?
I explain it here:
th-cam.com/video/xX4hfR_90gQ/w-d-xo.htmlm6s
thank you
I'm unimpressed by Godzilla Singular Point.
gotta love Wikipedia ;)
the animation director mustve had a hard time directing his animations cuz he animate straight ahead
Mobi

@@jmalmsten you nailed it

Do not use windows media player.
quicktime causes my version of camtasia to crash
I am not 100% certain about this, but I think there are more than just two media players.
Did you really call it "live action"?...

"animes" -_-

@@HowardWimshurst I wasn't familiar with your works and commissions and I've only recently have and I must say they are very good.
There's no western equivalent.
