I took some C++, web programming, and business programming classes in Uni but they didn't have much to do with what I do now. I learned a lot on TH-cam, and from different websites- I mostly make HTML5/JS canvas based 2d sprite based 8/16 bit inspired platformers and am currently trying to get good enough at drawing to attempt an action RPG in the veins of Seiken Densetsu. I have a lot of books on animating and find that it is the most difficult barrier for me to overcome without any formal training. I'm not great, but I have done a lot of studying, religiously watch GDC videos, and am doing a lot of sprite work practice. I'm particularly interested in motion/action conveyance with limited frames. That's why (although not exactly a tutorial in what I'm doing) these videos are amazing. At least to me.
Same thought here as well. Especially that close up shot of pain punching the ground and his face gets distorted. I thought was amazing. My friend said his baby brother could animated better than that "rubbish". I remember feeling infuriated and argued back saying he doesn't even animate and wouldn't understand haha! But hey. This was back in high school and you know how stubborn high school kids were
Naruto vs Pain was great, except when Naruto turned into tailed beast mode which is all I remembered before re-watching it. I don't think it's the art style alone. The scene also had very rough sketches of the background, no noise, flat colors which looks rather rushed and unfinished. Combine that with goofy faces and rag-doll mode pain and I can understand why people mock it.
The pain fight was too goofy but it was not badly animated in my eyes. I loved every moment of it. I guess a crucial and sad moment like that was not supposed to be animated using that style but I'm happy that it exists.
You ever seen dragon ball Z? *throws one punch* “YoU aRe StRoNgEr, KaKaRoT” *throws a ki blast* *exchange of saracastic insults* NEXT TIME ON DRAGON BALL Z
Enjoyed the breakdown. I’m now a 30 year old cinematographer and I’ve always loved the specific fight scenes in naruto that clearly pushed the limits of the characters. Especially the POV shots from the movie with rock lee. Started watching naruto back when I was 14. Those were easier times

Dude this is so cool. I have ranted and raved about these certain fights (this one and the one vs Pain) and I loved how he broke their structures to emphasize how fast one was going or how hard they were hit. You hit the nail on the head. Its so engaging
Honestly it was the sakuga moments that kept me watching Naruto as a kid. And the fact that people disliked when characters went off model for expressive scenes disappoints me. It's almost like people levelling that criticism had never heard of the basic fundamentals such as squash and stretch. Can't wait to see a video on the pain fight because that is the one I really enjoyed for the visual spectacle. Then again I'm the type that adores Masaaki Yuuasa animations, making animation look fluid is so evocative.
Nah I totally with you. I actually prefer when the series does that. Because that let's me know as the viewer that some epic shit was about to go down. The pain fight is a prime example. When he first fights naruto the animation is the same. Up until he starts to go into bijuu mode. The fight itself become more intense which only begs for the animation to be different and fit the emotion and tension within the fight................also they just look cooler!
Dude! This! Man it makes me so happy to hear someone else echo the same things ive been trying to talk about with my friends, the weight shifts of characters, their movements the use of physics to give a feel to it. It's amazing, and Naruto is one of the few anime ive seen do it to this level. imo of what ive seen thus far
One of the best animators in my year was very passionate in physics and mechanics. Sometimes he would spend hours upon hours playing with various materials (water, sand, dirt) and the camera we had in class taking pictures, looking at them, drawing, writing etc.
Thanks for this analysis! I hadn't really considered showing the characters thought process in the midst of a fight. I'm usually just thinking of the action, and at most the character expressing themselves through HOW they fight. Every day I appreciate Jackie Chan just a little bit more...
Kobayashi! I'm so excited to see you cover him. He's become a new favorite of mine. Can't wait to see it - really enjoyed your breakdown of Matsumoto. "Your character does not need to be consistent with the character design on all of your drawings in the animation stage. Imposing this rule leads to very *boring*, *clinical* animation which is not fun to watch." You absolutely nailed it. It pains me when people work under the assumption that a character has to look 100% on-model in order for the animation to be good when all the greatest animators break form all the time. That defeats the purpose of a lot of animation's core principles.
Returning to school in the fall to finish a proper visual design degree, your video is good inspiration to keep me thinking on ways to evolve my craft. Thank you for this! Subscribed!

naruto has the best fight scenes of any anime. I started off watching naruto and have watched countless other animes hoping to get the same feel. But Naruto takes the cake
Hope you liked it! If you didnt binge everything religiously like me (due to nostalgia glasses since i saw only part 1 as a kid. I picked it up again last year to rewatch part 1 then shippuden for the first time.) id recommend finding a site that lists filler episodes so you can skip em, a lot of filler arcs are good but idk if you're the type of person who likes em. Nostalgia aside Naruto is a solid series, not the best, but good.
Thank God for anime keeping traditional animation alive and innovative. But also here’s hoping the animators will eventually be treated, paid and cared for like the valued people and employees they are.
Randal Wagner bro. When orochimaru attacked the village he summoned/resurrected hashirama and tobirama to fight hiruzen. He defeated them but sacrificed himself with the reaper death seal to seal both of the hokages and orochimarus hands so he would never be able to use a justu.

The scenes that had the most impression on my was the one where Sasuke climbs up from under the water to get on top of it after getting knocked down hard by Naruto (the scene is included in this video), the whole fight where the reanimated Madara fights literally whole nations, and the same Madara pulling the whole "what are you going to do about the second one?". The last one in particular was absolutely jaw dropping.

@@bruh-uq2zx frs. Studio toei spammed that on the goku and jiren fight, I was like, damn why they keep repeating the frames and showing the same fighting sequences 10 episodes ago. Every fight feels the same.
Wow, that was a really interesting analysis! Thank you for sharing! I watched Bleach after Naruto, and was always disappointed, because the fight scenes in Bleach mostly consist from a flash and then they stop and you wait, which one will hit the ground.

i'm experimenting on smear frames and snappy animation in fight sequences. this video help me to understand about it. its cool. keep give us breakdowns . thanks .
Not only is it the character poses but also the landscaping. The landscape seems to be in motion. And in a fighters perspective, it would seem to be in motion simply because of your movements. It's absolutely beautiful how he embraces that element.
The Boruto series has really stiff animation with very few times where animation kicks up. The colors and background art is great but flat and non dynamic, and just doesn't go well together with the lackluster animation. I miss the older series more and more.
Yes you are right there are many times the older series had lower quality animation. But higher quality animation was more often as well as better storytelling. Boruto series is 50-60 episodes in and maybe 1-2 well animated sequences which lasted MUCH less time. Fact is, Naruto has had more overall quality animation than Shippuden. And Shippuden has had more overall quality animation than Boruto if you discount the filler.
The problem is that the animators will have a tough time when it catches up with the manga with Ikemoto's drawing style compared to Kishimoto's (which fell in line with the style the characters are usually designed). And he's not so great at poses either. Doesn't help when he also draws Sarada in inappropriate clothing that the animators will have to switch out for the gaiden clothing. It's just not great reference material to adapt.
I discovered your channel because of this awesome video, now I'm learning from you on my self-taught animation journey. Thanks for all the content you put out here on TH-cam!!

have you checked out this book "animators survival kit"? i learnt a lot from it on animation
Its funny how a anime that lets the charactors walk on water has more beliefable fight scenes then movies like The Last Jedi.
th-cam.com/video/uTEaohR9r6A/w-d-xo.html
People always mocked the facial expressions and the poor animations like the pain v naruto. I always love it and it's hilarious
Pain-VS-Naruto9tailFox have have great animation!
It have great power and energy!
UzumakiAbdi Fludity > Detail
Fantastic. I'm far from art and animation, and I never thought about those details. Ty for this video. Very interesting!)
This animator is on of the reasons why Naruto is so special for me thanks for the work
Can’t wait to find the genius who makes them talk so damn much
No fucking kidding, it ruins the pacing.

In case this is a genuine question, it's the author of the original source of material who is Kishimoto lol
I've known of Naruto as long as I've watched Anime, but I've Neve actually seen more than a few seconds of it until this video. Looks like amazing energy in this show.
Finally, something about matsumoto
I haven't watched this show since I was a kid. It is so amazing to look back at it and appreciate the work that I couldn't even fathom being done at the age I watched the show originally.
Zolar Cartoons whyyy do you plan to pick it back and watch shippuden too

Maybe i havent seen the anime in your opinion.
So which is that anime according to u....?
I know that animes like fate series are said to have most stunning graphics...
Unfortunately i have only seen some visuals....
Manu Anil What about Attack on titan ? My Hero Academia ? There are plenty more with better animation than OPM even though it also have a very good animation.

Really good analysis! I watched de animations a lot as a kid and knowing his methods has been really insightful. Can’t wait for the next video😁👍🏿
One of the best animators in my year was very passionate in physics and mechanics. Sometimes he would spend hours upon hours playing with various materials (water, sand, dirt) and the camera we had in class taking pictures, looking at them, drawing, writing etc.
This video taught me to appreciate the animation process and all the work that goes into it
Bro when you see the animation get smooth you know shits gonna go down
Thanks for this analysis! I hadn't really considered showing the characters thought process in the midst of a fight. I'm usually just thinking of the action, and at most the character expressing themselves through HOW they fight. Every day I appreciate Jackie Chan just a little bit more...
It is a very courageous act to pause a Naruto animation. Great video.
That defeats the purpose of a lot of animation's core principles.
norio matsumoto got me into sakuga and animation in general, he's a GENIUS
Returning to school in the fall to finish a proper visual design degree, your video is good inspiration to keep me thinking on ways to evolve my craft. Thank you for this! Subscribed!
Oh my god!! Thank you so much for these types of videos! I was watching one of your videos and i subscribed right away. Then i stumbled on these videos and they are amazing. My interest in animation has been growing more over the years and i really want to develop this interest of mine. Your videos have helped me in thinking and finding out more about animation in just a couple of hours
These legends are so inspiring 💪
naruto has the best fight scenes of any anime. I started off watching naruto and have watched countless other animes hoping to get the same feel. But Naruto takes the cake
There's a scene where Sasuke cracks Naruto's head and throws him from a ravine and incrusted him with his head !! The animation was excellent
Not a series, but sword of the stranger takes the cake for me.
@@Irishhound ill check it out
Jujutsu kaisen also has beautiful fight scenes
The only anime that comes close in my opinion is Jujutsu kaisen, the choreography feels similar to Naruto and it's pretty good ngl
Kakashi has to be one of my favorite character expetially in his fights against akutski members
Xx NoobAtLifexX, I was mesmerized by these fights and would watch them on replay.
I love the dramatic fight between him and obito ....
He is very genius n smart.... Even strongest enemy can not defeat him easily.... Cuase he uses mind n power..... My fvrte character

His fights against hidan and kakuzu, zabuza, obito. Some of the best in show.
Okay, geez fine. I'll give Naruto a chance.
Holzkohlen you won’t regret it. I thought the show was overrated, but honestly it deserves the popularity it has.
Don't that, go see one piece. Is 10000x more intelligent and the story is insane. Naruto is good only when you are 12.
@@caiovondannecker5771 U gotta be kidding. One piece story is trash compared to naruto

Thank God for anime keeping traditional animation alive and innovative. But also here’s hoping the animators will eventually be treated, paid and cared for like the valued people and employees they are.

there is a comparison of sasuke doing the same movements as bruce lee btw
Enkii Muto really, i saw a comparison of sasuke doing exactly the same move as the guy in cowboy bebop
The Naruto vs Neji fight straight up rips off the train fight out of the Cowboy bebop movie
Kaibutsu Garou The cowboy bebop train fight is homage to a movie, as is the naruto neji fight.
Kaibutsu Garou cowboy Bebop was a boring average series that never got popular

I subbed because of this. Great video.
Look at how Norio made Hashiramas hands shake when he was using wood style on the third. 1:03
Elijae good eye
*Naruto animation > One piece animation* 🔥
When did hashirama fight the third? I don’t remember these scenes

As I study this field I must say this was my favorite episode of all of Naruto..it's also very pleasing to actually see the episode's work frame by frame. This content I s AWESOME! My DUDE!!

Wow, that was a really interesting analysis! Thank you for sharing! I watched Bleach after Naruto, and was always disappointed, because the fight scenes in Bleach mostly consist from a flash and then they stop and you wait, which one will hit the ground.

Not only is it the character poses but also the landscaping. The landscape seems to be in motion. And in a fighters perspective, it would seem to be in motion simply because of your movements. It's absolutely beautiful how he embraces that element.

When anime respects physics, it can make the animation 100% better than if it didn't
I'm learned a lot about making definitive animations just by watching this video. Well done sir.
I agree but, , Boruto pretty much just started, the first 50 episodes aren't from the manga. But The Sakura and Nue fight were well animated.
Boruto is still boring as shit.
True, I was wondering how Studio Periot would design the villains, like Jigen. they have very distinct looks that can't be easily reproduced.
Also, I love how he makes one vs many looks easy to abimate
