One thing I think the Beasties don't get nearly enough credit for is how complex their lyrics are. Their rhymes are so intertwined and they play off each other so well. True geniuses.
I absolutely agree however IMO the use of the distortion on this entire album made them hard to understand and differentiate who was rapping. You have to remember that when this came out there was either no internet or the internet was in its infancy. So we had to rewind and playback alot to understand what they were saying. Or if you were lucky the lyrics were in the tape case or CD. I also put Rage into this category as well. Some of the greatest lyrics that were made inaudible because of the background or effects.
Just coming here to say that, especially with this song. Their lyrics alone represent only a small part of their overall personality, which comes across well in the way the song was sped up during lipsynch playback, so when the video was slowed down to normal speed, they were jumping around in slow motion.
Nah, the Beastie's are equally amazing when driving, no video needed. I agree that their videos are awesome and add to the experience, just not a must. :P Cheers!
Absolutely. The Beastie Boys are the best, and I have nothing against modern hip hop but to me, it just doesn't compare. And they're definitely quintessential NYC, every time I hear them, I feel like I just hopped the train and headed back to Brooklyn.
I was still in the Army when this album came out, and I blasted this song down the hall of the barracks and everyone was jamming. Everyone loved it. You can't front on that.
I saw the Beastie Boys on this tour at a little place that used to be a skating rink in Glen Burnie, Maryland. Henry Rollins opened the up. Phenomenal show. RIP Adam. Thanks for sharing
They started playing their instruments again on this LP (Check Your Head - '92), after the super sample-driven "Paul's Boutique," an absolutely amazing record in it's own right. Speaking of which, "Shake Your Rump" and "Hey Ladies" are two bangers from that one.
The REAL OG's right here...none of this bullshit about cap'n niggas or pimpin' bitches, just pure flow and bars. They do the best film clips too, you're missin out.
Hell yeah! You've done some of the radio hits, now you gotta hear the real magic like High Plains Drifter, Car Thief, She's Crafty, Hey Ladies, Shadrach, The New Style....
In this episode of Brad & Lex, this grungy rap rock track produced by the Beastie Boys themselves hits Lex directly in her fuzzy pink hat exacting cause for her to release her "rattle stir bop" equipped with cool hand and "shoulder work" while Brad allows us to gaze upon his relaxed "side to side sway".
My all-time Beastie's tracks. I remember when this came out in the early 90's loved it then still love it now. Was so hoping you two would do a vid on this. Sweet!
This track is 30 years old this year from the 1992 masterpiece album known as "Check Your Head". Such a classic album. I saw them at the Reading Festival here in the UK back in 1992 when they were touring for this album. I was 19 at the time. They had the crowd going nuts! Happy memories :)
Beastie Boys are so LEGIT some people sleep on them thinking they only are goofs but they are SOLID LEGENDS. Funny you did Beck the same day. He is the closest thing to the BB as far as unpredictable sample placements etc. GREATNESS
If you like turntable scratching, check out "Rockit" by Herbie Hancock. It's mostly instrumental other than some vocoder scatting, so you don't need a lyric video, just watch the music video.
I hope you guys do more Beastie, they are so fun! Some people say they are true MCs as opposed to just rappers, because for Beastie it really is all about the fun and the party and making the crowd laugh and dance and have a good time. They've got clever and funny bars, but on top of that, the voices and attitude and playfulness they use when delivering the lines puts a fun and unique spin on it. Plus nobody does the echoes/layers/turn-taking thing as well as the Beastie Boys. That's their whole trademark. They've got so many hits but I'd especially love to see you guys give a listen to "Three MCs and One DJ" and "Sure Shot" and "Shake Your Rump". They're so fun!
One of my fave songs from one of my fave groups of all time! Takes me back to high school in the early 90s, blasting this CD in my car, and rapping along, of course-not caring who saw me.) ♥️ Only got to see them once live, at Lollapalooza ‘94, but at least I got to see them-unlike other favorite groups who had a member die before I could see them live. (Like INXS with Michael Hutchence; I saw them in ‘06, with JD Fortune singing, and they were still amazing). Dude- The Beastie Boys live were awesome. The people who actually had seats were standing in them most of the time The Beasties were on the stage, especially for songs like this, and of course “Sabotage.’ They were on fire on that stage!🔥
Beastie is great. The New Style, posse in effect, license to ill, and rhymin and stealin are also some great songs. The whole License to ill album is great.
This is 30 years old.....That's old school.... I remember getting my first car when this came out and smoking much weed riding around jammin to this, Cypress Hill, NWA, House of Pain, Del, Tool, Rage, ect. Man, those were good times
Lex....👀 Fly AF in the ensemble! Videos with the Beastie Boys is key. One of my favs of all time. Pioneers of hip hop that were well respected, incredible entertainers and ahead of their time with some of their visions. RIP MCA. Your missed brother 💪
Honestly the way The Beastie Boys was rhyming in the mid ' 90s was old school to us that was teenagers back then they still had that Do-Do Rhyme flow from 1983
@@TLSARTWORK TUSARTWORK I know I was a kid back in the '80s and I'm from Brooklyn NY just like them so I'm familiar with them I've been listening to them close to 40 years now
The Beastie Boys were my introduction to Hip Hop around that time 1992-93. I have a lot of respect for this guys. On interviews they always talk about their influences and how they played all instruments on their albums later recorded them and sampler that with other sources. They help me discover the old school of Hip Hop.
Ya'll need more Beasties. They never fail, their lyrics are funky, and hilarious. And the love and fun these guys had together in their 30 year career is infectious.
This song goes to show that there is no right and wrong in music. Both the vocal and drums sounds would be terrible in any other setting, but they make this song awesome.
@Lex Can’t remember how much you’ve heard yet of The Beastie Boys, but they’re rhymes tend to be like that clever sometimes kind of silly, and I definitely love to have fun in their videos! Also, everything you might’ve heard from their first album, License To Ill-that entire album is pretty different from the rest of their material.
Dopest Dudes ever! Totally set the table for so many hip-hop artists. Saw them live in Boston and Public Enemy opened for them. At the time, we had not heard of PE. What a show!!!
Yes it is 100% old school. They are actually in a group of bands that pioneered the hip hop genre. It came out my high school senior year in 1985-'86 and we all had the cassette tape listening in our vehicles. Beastie Boys were in the hip hop genre. Same era as Run DMC, MC Hammer, and other hip hop originals. Long before NWA and EazyE arrived
Highly recommend you check out the song- definitely with the video-for their very last single before MCA’s death: Make Some Noise. They don’t appear in the video- it’s all well-known actors not only playing them, but all the other random people. Great song and entertaining video!
I get exited every time you guys release a Beastie Boys reaction, and then discover you aren’t doing the video. Every time. It’s disappointing because I know it would add so much to your reaction. Every single Beastie Boys video is worth it.
You need to do check check it out live on letterman.. walking from the subway to the studio .it's absolutely perfect. I'm so lucky I got to see them on the original license to ill tour with LL cool j...😎 Best band ever...
i now brad likes to see the lyrics but lex needs a separate monitor to watch the actual music video! this song has a video that really goes with the song!

Definitely check out their live performance from Glasgow. It’s amazing. You see them play instruments and switch it up with rhyming to the beats laid out by Hurricane.

What gets me is how in the world do they remember all those lyrics and dont miss a beat .. just amazing ..

Absolutely. The Beastie Boys are the best, and I have nothing against modern hip hop but to me, it just doesn't compare. And they're definitely quintessential NYC, every time I hear them, I feel like I just hopped the train and headed back to Brooklyn.
Yea Lex has great music taste so it’s obvious she’d prefer good stuff to total shit
The video makes the song even better.
I was still in the Army when this album came out, and I blasted this song down the hall of the barracks and everyone was jamming. Everyone loved it. You can't front on that.
Back when some NCO's had been in 'Nam. Being in the Army in the early 90's was looking back on it pretty awesome.
I love how you did this song. These guys can spit and their DJ's beats are fire. You can't not bob and weave to this cut!!!
Root Down is terrific, also dont forget Tribe Called Quest - 'Scenerio' is a MUST
Also Excursions :)
The entire “Low End Theory Album” start to finish is one the best albums made period.

Tom, the guitarist from Rage against the machine was still at an ivy league college learning how oppressed he was when this song came out
So What’Cha Want is by far my favorite Beastie’s song. They just hit different. Keep ‘’em coming!
Lex: "They sound like Rage (against the machine)"
Me: Nah, babe, Rage sounds like the Beasties. Give ups to the OG's!

Beastie Boys=ICONIC!! Please do their song “Paul Revere” next- if you haven’t- sick reverse 808 bass SLAPS hard! Yeeeeeah....💖💙👍✌️
