The Beastie Boys were notorious for being great rappers but also playing their own instruments and infusing rock elements into rap WAAAAAY before most other artists thought to do so. They’re truly amazing. I also believe they have the best selling rap album of the 80s? Don’t quote me on that…but I think it might be true. Love them.
Anthrax. Im the man
Rick Rubin was a big part of the sound
They were a punk band before Rick Rubin got ahold of them and had them mix hip hop and rock.
@TexasBBQ Smokehouse No, he used it fine here
BB Boys weren’t just rappers, they played instruments too on some tracks. I’ve always really loved those tracks - this is one of my favorites! Glad you listened to and reviewed it!
The video was basically a parody of 70s police TV shows and movies. For a first listen, I could see how it was a distraction. Very comedic if you watched some of those shows.
Real Starsky & Hutch vibes.
@@normanleroy1874 Starsky & Hutch for sure. I loved Harry O. as a youth.
Agree - it was the best video of that year - EPIC. Directed by Spike Jonze.
You have to be a 70's kid t get it. And now this song is 20 years old , holy shit
@@bothellkenmore Absolutely have to be a 70’s kid to really get it!
*Beastie Boys - "Three MC's and One DJ", "Intergalactic", and "Shake Your Rump" is a good start...*
Intergalactic it too late. Brass Monkey and No Sleep Til Brooklyn would be better. ;)
@@JoeBlow_4 Root Down
Intergalactic Planetary. Also the three mcs and 1 dj is fkng 🔥🔥🔥
"So What'cha Want"
those are all good songs, but "Paul Revere" is, by far, their best song, from any album.
The Beastie Boys started as a punk group. Then they met Rick Rubin when he was starting Def Jam and they kind of changed into one of the early hip hop groups, but their sound always retained some of that early NY punk vibe.
Punk/hip hop is what they are. As adept with turntables and mixers as they are with drums guitars and effects pedals.
They began dabbling in rap prior to meeting Rick Rubin, but they, Rick Rubin, Russell Simmons, and Run DMC basically together broke rap/hip-hop onto MTV and the mainstream with Def Jam Records and influenced everything hip-hop became since them as well as founding the rock/rap genre that made bands like Linkin Park, Rage Against the Machine, Kid Rock, and Limp Bizkit so popular
I likely wouldn’t have ever known that they started out as a punk band if it hadn’t been for the early days of Napster.
Almost except they had released a hip hop 12 inch before meeting Rubin. They hired Rubin to be their DJ so they could play their hip hop live. All off this is prior to Rubin meeting R. Simmons and starting Def Jam.
And the drummer from Luscious Jackson was a member...so Beastie Boys and Girl, I guess.
"How would you classify this?" asks Brad.
The Beastie Boys. That's how you classify it.
Their albums would often fuse different genres, but all their songs would ultimately sound like the Beasties and no-one else.
They had a sound of their own and were absolutely brilliant!
Brad gets confused by anything that doesn’t fit in a neat little box. He really just needs to listen to the music and stop dissecting it.
Jewish guys screaming at me over great beats. Love it
as the boat sailed away there were 2 empty seats.....
One of the best music videos of all time in my opinion! You can just feel how much fun they had making it. And the song to go along with it... perfection 😃
Definitely one of the best videos of all time, it’s meant to be a spoof of crime drama’s of the 70’s
Definitely one of the best videos of all time, but it makes more sense if you're old enough to get all the '70s cop show cliches.
Heck yeah Beasty Boys are epic! Do "Three MC's and one Dj" "Intergalactic", " Paul Revere", "Sure Shot", " Alive" , "Shake your Rump" and so many more tracs. You won't be dissapointed
Beastie Boys started as a NYC Punk Rock band then morphed into Rap/Rock/Punk. Sabotage is straight back to their Punk Rock roots mixed with Rap & EDM.
Punky hip-hop. Best description for them. This was 93. There would be no rock-hip hop fusion without the Beastie Boys. Their first big album, License to Ill, came out in 86 and was the first rap album to reach #1.
Pub trivia! The first rap song to hit #1 was Blondie's Rapture. "rap" lol
Actually, there would be no rock hip-hop fusion without Aerosmith/Run-DMC and shortly thereafter Anthrax I'm the Man. (1986 and 1987 respectively).
@@steviekc9057 That's the first rap to hit #1 but I sure wouldn't call it a "rap song." It had a rap break in it.
@@Donb1233 True. It's a matter of perspective. There was a period between about the late '80s and mid-'90s in which it was common for pop songs to include a rap verse, usually functioning as part of the song's bridge. Nobody called those "rap songs." It almost felt like pop was dipping its toes in the hip-hop waters. But when Blondie did "Rapture," rap was such a novelty to mainstream audiences at the time (and given that the song's title itself alludes to it) that it frequently has been called a rap song ever since. Initially the term "rap" was being used somewhat loosely. If you look back at Michael Jackson's iconic "Thriller" video from 1983, its credits actually refer to Vincent Price's monologue (which is probably more accurately described as spoken-word) as "rap"--with quotation marks around the word.
On the other hand, the boundary could get blurry, particularly with the house genre, which was primarily electronic dance-pop but would include rapping whenever it felt like it, and for some people, the first "rap songs" they heard were in fact house songs (think Technotronic's "Pump Up the Jam").
This really was PEAK Beastie Boys.....90s hip hop/funk/rock playing on a 70s cop tv show
So What'cha Want is also great. 'I'm Buddy Rich when I fly off the handle' refers to the infamous tapes of drummer Buddy Rich cursing out his band - Beastie Boys have tons of references like this.
"I'm Buddy Rich when I fly off the handle" Rich was a jazz drummer known for his quick temper. Thank you guitar hero.
Also the video wasn’t trying to be serious. Even for its time it was definitely a parody. Classic goofballs! Lol.
Must of been fun to record
Didn't this music video win tons of awards because it was so cool and cheesy
It was a parody of all those shows us GenX’ers grew up with...Mannix, Streets of San Francisco, McCloud, Starsky & Hutch, Baretta etc etc.
The first time I saw it, I couldn’t stop cracking up. They did it perfectly.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 it blows my mind that it needs explaining. the video is so epic from day 1, still makes me laugh watching it. They even got Hurricane in there.
Actually, they are doing a parody of the 1970's cop shows and movies. Also realize that the Beastie boys started out as a PUNK ROCK band at the beginning of the 1980's. Like Run-DMC, they incorporated a lot of rock vibes into their music. They actually made their own music and are very good musicians. I am surprised how so many people today cannot watch a video AND listen to the lyrics. It was always easy for us.
The beginning elements of rock/rap. Beastie Boys started out as a punk band and ventured to the rap scene with help and support from RUN D MC. Beasties first album was meant as a joke but gained so much attention and support they continued on with their unique mix. Cool thing is they play all instruments and do their own mixing. 👏👏👏🤘😎🤘
they do their own producing. not mixing. Their albums even had credits for who mixed it.
@@panrick ....MARIO CATALDO
@@sheepdog4404 Mario was more the audio engineer than the producer, although he did get several producer credits on their records, but the Beastie's wrote the songs, they produced themselves, my guy.
Brad nailed it Beasties were Punk-Hop thats their roots started as a punk band then fell in love with the NYC rap scene in 80s
Beastie Boys are waaaaayyyyy more hip-hop then this on average. They have influenced as well as have been influenced by sooooo many hip-hop groups you guys are into.
The Beastie Boys were first a punk rock band. Completely punk rock on their first album the Pollywog stew album . It was their second album Liscened to Ill where they introduced rap and hip hop. Their role models were the Bad Brains. The Beastie Boys took the B&B from Bad Brains and came up with the name Beastie Boys. Whereas the Bad Brains were an all black band playing hardcore punk rock .The Beastie Boys were inspired by the Bad Brains to do something similar being white kids making rap music. Later the Beastie Boys would produce a Bad Brains record Build a Nation on Megaforce records.
All right!!! Also check out Intergalactic, Brass Monkey, So What’cha Want, Sure Shot. Too many to list. Loooove the Beasties 🤘🤘🤘🤘
I'd avoid Intergalactic. Probably their worst single.
@@barnigranero5882 What?!? Nahh...there's no such thing.
Beastie Boys are 80s pioneers of rap/punk rock mix.
The whole 1994 album, Ill communication is awesome.
Clever mix of rap, funk, punk, rock and more.
They put all their musical influences in this album which is a blast from start to finish.
@@billybennet75
You are right.
Just corrected
Punky hip hop is a pretty good description. Beastie Boys started as a punk band in the early 80s and then got into a more hiphop style during their time working with Rick Rubin.
Beastie Boys are one of the best bands ever, all genres.
Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication... Perfect Trifecta.
The other albums are pretty damn good too.
Get real. Beastie Boys don't rank. I like them, though.
Nu Metal was prototyped by Rage Against the Machine in '92, it was officially made as Nu Metal by KoRn in '95. So every so called "Rap Rock/Metal" genre before '92 like Beastie Boys and Faith No More are probably the sounds that influenced Nu Metal. But they all must thank Aerosmith and RUN DMC with that unusual collab that gave birth to it all.
Beastie Boys actually started as a punk band. They are awesome!
A beat so ILL that one of the reboot timeline Star Trek movies turned this song into a literal weapon.
The video for this song is epic!
Every cop show from the '70's and '80's.
One the best music videos of all time, and the video is a spoof of the 70’s
Beastie Boys were a group that were essentially at the forefront of two decades of Hip Hop. They did a lot of things no one else did, won TONS of awards, sold millions upon millions of albums, and had some of the best videos around.
Beasties are probably best described as ; rap, hip hop, punk fusion. Probably have to grant them the position as the generators of the screemo genre, w\o actually being screemo themselves
One of the most iconic songs and videos of the glorious 90’s.
Just a personal pet peeve of mine re:the 90s revisited. Windbreakers like that were long gone by the mid-90s.
That is all.
All those bands you talked about this sounding like...yeah, guess who inspired them? With the possible exception of RHCP, the Beastie Boys preceded them by at least a decade. They are the Rap/rock genre OGs
100 percent agree. Plus Beasties are 1000 times better than say Limp Bizket.
@@anthonyv6962 Me banging on a kiddie piano with a rubber mallet sounds better than Limp Bizkit. That's not an opinion. That is fact.
@@jaxager I think we are on the same page here.
Faith No More was also doing some similar stuff since the mid-'80s, though it leaned more toward rock/metal with some hip hop elements than straight rap-rock.
The video, directed by Spike Jonze, was nominated for MTV music video of the year. One of the best videos ever!
"Paul Revere" is a masterpiece and a piece of genius.
They were originally a hardcore band from the 80s nyc hardcore scene but morphed into a hip hop act and blew up the whole scene and changed the game and are greatly respected in both the rock and hip hop circles
Beasties started as Punk, moved into Hip Hop and then....jazz/elevator music/hipster type stuff. then mixed all styles on albums. MCA was Inventor' of Looping. Masters of the Craft. Live shows world renown as AWESOME. Mix Master Mike is Mindblowing.
YUP! What I was coming down to note. "3 MCs and 1 DJ" !!!!
The Beastie Boys actually started out as a punk band; however, their art transended either rap or rock. One of the few artists in whick I enjoy all of their works.
Great band. I was a strictly metal guy in high school but the beastie boys helped to introduce me to hip hop. I love the energy and grooves from these guys.
I’ve gained a newer appreciation for the synthesis myself.
This video is a throwback to the 70's. This is straight up 70's cop TV show from the hair, clothes, to the cars to the word "Sabotage" the videos are always fun and not meant to be taken seriously.
Beastie Boys gained fame in the 80's as a rap/ hip-hop group that started punk. They are legendary and pretty revered in the music industry.
They were a group of 3, unfortunately Adam Yauch (MCA) passed away in 2012 after battling cancer.
Please react to Wha cha want, No Sleep Till Brooklyn, 3 MC's & 1 DJ and Body Movin. Beastie Boys were truly pioneers of crossing over different genres and in my opinion they are greats in the music industry.
Beastie Boys have a large catalog of big hits and you should do a poll for next reaction. Very entertaining
Beastie Boys were a hip hop group... they did start as a punk rock band. Then, they switched in the 80's to become MC's...
Bought a cassette in the early 80s where beastie Boys had 2 songs Pauls Not Home was 1 of them.....
Cassette was yellow and had loads of US punk
You're referring to the 1982 ROIR NY Thrash Cassette. "Paul's Not Home" is by Adrenalin O.D. The Beastie Boys songs are "B.E.A.S.T.I.E." and "Riot Fight". Riot Fight being one of the first recordings of a blast beat.
@@anthonyv6962 ah thanks an absolutly perfect answer... Ye I bought that shit for a buck or so and loved it.
This album was the soundtrack to my life in college. It's such a classic.
Punk/rap mix lol This was very popular in the '90s, '00s. See RATM, Body Count (rapper Ice -T's band) and nu-metal bands.
When you have time, check out the Beasties playing Sabatage live on David Letterman and you'll realize how much of rockers they are. Besides the scratching & rapping that is at the forefront of the song, they are also playing guitars and banging on drums at the same time. They were all extremely talentaed individuals.
This^^^
Yes, here in New Zealand is Saturday, and I had a long week, so I'm binge-watching your channel, lol.
This song made me want to have a band. I was like: yes, that's exactly what I want to do. Although I'm not a professional musician, I play the guitar whenever inspired.
These 3 dudes... So wise and talented a such a young age. I'm glad I grew up with their music as the soundtrack of my life.
"No Sleep Till Brooklyn" is a good Beastie Boys song.
If I remember right didn't Kerry King play on that track?
Being as The Beastie Boys started life as punk rock band. I put this song into my punk rock play list. I think they went home to their early influences. I feel like their song "Gratitude " has a punk rock feel as well, and their song "Heart Attack Man" is full on punk rock.
The Beastie boys started out as a punk rock band. So they've always kept that energy. Even rage against the machine being the first metal band with a hip hop twist their energy is pure punk rock
This is one of my favourite songs of all time. The video is the greatest ever. Classic.
You would never guess how many varieties of style and sound they had over the years. Gratitude is another song that doesn't reflect most of their songs but kicks ass! It's also filmed at Pompeii in homage to Pink Floyd Echo's. Saw them live thankfully at Santa Barbara Bowl - tiny venue and it was a BLAST
That's not a tiny venue. That's twice the size of what I'd call a medium/large venue.
The Beastie Boys started as a punk band and transitioned into hiphop, and it was amazing. Sabotage is a perfect example of this
If you two are gonna go on a Beastie Boys binge, I'm all in on that! My favorite group ever ❤
I believe this was the first album to top the Hip hop and rock charts. The Beastie boys have a lot of great songs. Over there albums the make quite an evolution in their music. Becoming better musicians and playing there own instruments. In the beginning they did more sampling. This video is a play on 70's cop tv shows. Beastie boys always seemed to have the most fun. Thanks for another excellent reaction.
Ad-Rock is the one who gave Rick Rueben LL Cool J's demo, which lead to him getting signed and started his career in music. Crazy to think how one of the godfathers of hip hop got his start. :P
He also produced the beat for his first release I Need a Beat
Seem to recall this was sort of another one of them accidental greatest hits. They were just messing about in the studio one day, jamming this funky, punky riff out on their guitars and the producer or engineer or somebody ran through from the control room all hyper and said something like "This stuff you're playing right now. THIS is the shit! Keep playing this". I'm heavily paraphrasing there but you get the picture.
The video is parodying 70's and early 80's cheesy cop shows.
For the hosts to not notice that the whole video is a spoof of cop tv show intros is the most telling part of this whole reaction video.
@@btbb3726 meh, they are young though. I doubt they sat through and watched the cheesy shit us older folks watched back in the day
Most people classify the Beastie Boys as hip hop but you are right, they always experimented with their sound. They even had some heavy techno and electronic songs too.
A band that did very well in the 90s that nobody is reacting to is BUSH: "Machinehead." You'll get lots of other songs recommended by them if you do it.
Bush singing glycerin live on stage in the rain is a must watch.
He was also married to Gwen Stefani for those who don't know
Yes. Razor blade suitcase was the first CD I ever bought. Such a good band. So solid suggestion
Best music video ever made & the tune is one of their best 😊
I'm totally ready for you to deep dive on this band...

There is a wealth of great stuff
BB were innovative. They have a really cool vibe. Whatcha Want is a great one by them.
Sick! They did this song live on David Letterman. They actually do play instruments. They practically invented rap rock. So what you want, Paul Revere, three MCS and one DJ
Me and my horsey horsey🐴and a quart of beer 🍺
That's right, I remember that Letterman episode!
This^^
It's on TH-cam best live performace ever
One of my favorite Beastie songs was Gratitude. Super solid.
They are hip hop legends. Watch LLs speech inducting them into the rock and roll hall of fame.
“I don’t like the video”…. Probably the best music video ever made 😊 .Beastie Boys we’re originally a punk band if that helps with the genre
The video is a parody of 1970's cop TV shows that were shot like the video, I remember loving it at the time cos we all grew up with Starsky and Hutch, Kojak and the professionals, and what a tune as well by the way!!
💥 Beastie Boys - Intergalactic 💥
Also, the live cover of "Sabotage" by Slipknot & Korn is 💥
LOL the video is a 90s rap/rock/punk band spoofing cops shows from the 70s- it's hilarious to me, but the song itself is a banger.
YES! So glad you did these guys. I hope you do more. Their catalogue is deep and wide.
They were kind of their own genre. Most of their stuff is more straight hip hop, but they combined hip hop, punk, metal (in their early days anyway), jazz, funk, psych-rock, and experimentation to make something that's not quite like any other band. Such a fun group.
Amazingly talented band! When this first came out, we just called it Rap…Sooooo goooooood! Enjoy! 🤘🏻🇨🇦
Best MTV music video ever.
Well Brad's guess on punk hip-hop was very accurate, beastie boys started as hardcore punk band for a very short time and switched to hip-hop afterwards, but you can feel the punk vibes.
There's so much more Beastie Boys you need to listen to!! You won't be disappointed. They are beyond iconic!!
Yes..great song from a great Album..you guys should check out some of their earlier work as well....perhaps 'Paul's Boutique"?
Beastie Boys were an American hip hop group from New York City, formed in 1981. The group was composed of Michael "Mike D" Diamond (vocals, drums), Adam "MCA" Yauch (vocals, bass), and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz (vocals, guitar, programming).
More Beasties PLEASE!! Check out 3 MCs and 1 DJ for some real hip hop. Also, anything from Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head or Ill Commminication is also great.
This is kind of amazing. They're utterly unaware that this is a 90s video parodying 70s cop shows
punk-hop sounds about right, IIRC they actually started out as a straight up punk group before going into a more hip-hop/rap direction.
They came out in the 80's, doing things no-one did back then. People forget how long rap and rock have been fusing together...
Gotta do 'Intergalactic' by Beastie Boys
Thanks for brightning up my day Lex and Brad! I hope you get to do this for as long as you like. You deserve it. Stay safe / Regards
I would classify Beastie Boys as punk-groove hip-hop with a Brooklyn twist. Should ch-ch-check out - So Watch'cha Want, Intergalactic, or Shake Your Rump. Just to name a few.
I think the video is absolutely badass. The hair and the mustaches are hilarious!
There’s just soooooo many shit-hot Beastie beats……Root Down, Get It Together, Stand Together……
Stand Together might be my favorite Beastie Boys song. It's so funky and weird and inspiring and great. Everything I love about them is in that song.
Punk + rap + funk + electronic + trip hop + pizza + microsoft _________90s
I know I'm in the minority, but as much as I LOVE the Beastie Boys, this song just never grabbed me.. I don't hate it, but if I want their more rockish/punkish side, I much prefer Gratitude, Time For Livin', or Remote Control.
As far as their hip hop stuff goes, they just pumped out banger after banger after banger. I love Mix Master Mike, and have nothing but respect for his skills and as a turntablist (both as solo artist, and his work with the Invisibl Skratch Piklz), but I definitely enjoyed the DJ Hurricane era of the Beasties the most... Just a more old school vibe with the beats and breaks used to build the musical tracks.
YES! "Gratitude" is my FAV B-Boy song!
It's a 90s song and the video is shot in the style of all the old 70s cop shows. If you haven't done it already, you absolutely need to react to the Beastie Boys "Paul Revere"
Make no mistake about it, Sabotage is a 90's rock classic. Guitar, bass, drums, and samples all played and recorded by the Beasties themselves. The Beasties were just as much Rock n Rollers as the were Rappers.
I love when people listen to this song as their first introduction to Beastie Boys and then have to go back a decade to hear where they came from. Like it makes me stupidly happy.
Isn't strange that now we are fans of reactors? I am a fan of these two people just because of their energy, just like i am a fan of my favorite bands.
Slayer was recording their seminal album "Reign in Blood" in the same studio at the same time the Beastie Boys were recording this record.
They got along and invited Kerry King to lay down the guitars and solo on "You gotta fight".
The song is well worth checking out!
What I love about the beasties, besides the amazing music, us their sense of humor.
Wow these guys really bring back High School memories for me loved theses guys back in the late 80s🤔
Think about this: in the same 6-month span,at the same studio,"Raising Hell" by Run DMC,"Reign In Blood" by Slayer, and "License To Ill" by the Beastie Boys were recorded. You guys should check out some of "Pollywog Stew" by the Beasties,if for no other reason than to measure the vast difference. I personally love it.
You should watch this performance live from a certain late night TV show....they totally blew people away, for their actual playing of all the music...yes, they had skills to play instruments live.
True first mainstream rap....from 70s....Rappers Delight by Sugar Hill Gang....and Blondie "Rapture" brought it out into limelight as well. Beastie Boys "Fight For Your Right" was the world's introduction to them. Btw they are the reason LL COOL J got his break into the scene.
Ah yeah, the Beastie Boys.👌the first album i bought was beasties boys licensed to ill(age10). A lot of great tracks to react to. I recommend So what'cha want & Paul Revere.
