- During week 14 of the 1986 NFL season, a travel agency in Upstate New York offered a baffling promotion for a game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cleveland Browns. If the Bills lose, we'll cover your ticket and your bus fare and everything. This was despite the fact that the Bills were one of the worst teams in football. Take a wild guess as to what happened next

Update: as someone pointed out, I accidentally said "on the Harlem Globetrotters" instead of "against the Harlem Globetrotters." Don't know why I said that, but you get the idea. I thought the Generals were due
i think the logic was "we bought too many tickets and can't sell them we are already gonna be in the red lets make a bet that at least CAN avoid that hit and even put us slightly in the green at the cost of potentially hitting us slightly further in the red" still absolute stupidity since this isn't a net zero loss bet but at least that logic could hold water with some adjustment
I mean the game was clearly rigged. The Globetrotters were using a freaking ladder!
Maybe the Generals needed a confidence boost!
Suggestion for future videos: include the math on screen rather than just talking about it over game footage. The same could be done when mentioning the records, like including standings of the teams at the time or the schedules.
keep up the interesting stories like this, enjoyed listening!
Krusty the Clown bet AGAINST the Harlem Globetrotters
The Generals were due!
I just shared to the Bills Mafia group page with 300k members. You'll be getting some views on here
Awesome! Really appreciate it!
I didn't expect you to end the video the way you ended it, but it makes sense. I always thought of Rochester, N.Y. as a Bills stronghold, so I had no idea that the Browns had so many fans there.
That’s the business equivalent of worse than if he did nothing but spike the ball into the ground on every single play
That part about Art Modell took me out 😂😂
To quote jg9’s pun , this was a dumb decision by the travel agency!! 😂😂😂😂😂
Almost as funny when Philip Morris had to pay 1 million dollars for winning the triple crown in 1986, without insuring it because they felt it was considered impossible
I thought Krusty bet on the Washington Generals.
Oh crap did I say "on the" instead of "against the"? Oof that's bad on my end. Didn't catch that one in the editing bay.
"they were using a ladder f'Chrissakes" @@OfficialJaguarGator9
It's crazy how the bills won 12 games and got as far as the afc championship game just two seasons after going 4-12 in 1986.
The Bills went 4-12 in 1986. They went 2-14 in both 1984 and 1985
@@scottfarmer8758in that three year span, the bills were 8-40! 😮😮😮
@@randytracy1742the mid 80s were a dark time in Buffalo
They got Andre Reed , Bruce Smith and Jim Kelly in 1987....all in HOF..Thurman Thomas in 88..hof as well
@@shawnokeefe1580bruce and reed in 85 kelly in 86 then thomas in 88
They should have waited a couple years 😂
What they really should have done was said “If the Bills actually pull an upset you get your money back for the ticket and don’t have to pay anything for the ticket just the bus ride there” reinsuring that they still make their money back if the Browns won. Also since they still had to pay for a bus if the Bills won at least there is that
Rogers Travel Company: the Mike McCarthy/Nathaniel Hackett of travel companies; with business acumen so poor it would be better if the 1986 Bills spiked the ball to the ground on every single passing play. 😂😂
It was an Eighth Amendment violation to watch that 1984 game
The prince comment was hysterical.
Jim Kelly actually played two seasons in the original USFL (1984-85). He didn’t play pro football at all in 1983.
There is a minimum purchase to qualify for free furniture from Matress Mac. I think was at least $3,000 the lat time he made the bet.
Rochester is a mini hotbed of Browns fans. Probably dates to the pre merger days and what NFL games were shown there
Similar to New England being Giants country prior to the AFL.
Lesson is…. Don’t be Stupid!!!
It would have made a lot more sense if they said if the Bills lost you would have to pay.
This is very similar to what happened at the 2010 World Cup when the North Korean government "offered" a group of 800 people the chance to see their country play in the World Cup in South Africa even though North Korea was easily the worst team at this particular World Cup. Heck it was a minor miracle that North Korea qualified for this World Cup as they beat a weakened Saudi Arabia squad that probably would have beat them easily had they been at full strength. Everything would be paid for out of pocket by the North Korean government though unlike this, the 800 people did not choose to travel to South Africa as they were forced into it by the North Korean government. They were also totally banned from doing any sightseeing, interacting with foreign fans & could only go to the game & then back to the hotel as part of this trip. As for how North Korea did at this World Cup, they almost tied with Brazil in a 2-1 loss then got absolutely destroyed by Portugal & the Ivory Coast 7-0 & 3-0 in the other two group games. In the end they only scored 1 goal & gave up 12. To make this even more crazy, the North Korean government in a propaganda piece later claimed that the whole experience was a success & that they won the 2010 World Cup by beating the US 7-0 even though that is a massive lie. They also failed to pay the three places in South Africa the 800 fans stayed at meaning the North Korean government basically defrauded three South African hotel chains as these were motels the 800 fans stayed at. North Korea has not qualified for the World Cup since then.
I remember this game glad the Browns won but it was the boringest football game I ever seen.
So mav leavey turned this team into the Juggernaut it was in 2 years...... he was a great coach!!
Wow... this was actually dumber than the Indianapolis Colts and the Tomahawk Chop fiasco (which JG9 did a video on). As a Browns fan, I would take this "bet". Even if I was a Bills fan in Rochester, I would take this "bet". Either way, I save on parking, whatever costs are associated with ~80 miles of driving are like gas, tolls (fastest route is probably the Thruway), commuter headaches, etc... and even if the Bills won somehow, at least I got to experience a home win. That last line is so correct.
68-team field, not 64-team field
I was just talking in the main tournament, since Presbyterian wouldn’t be a good example in 68, since they won their First Four battle
