I believe the magic to Dippin Dots is it they are made with liquid nitrogen and Frozen in an instant and that's what gives them their creamy texture that they are known for. This is just tiny ice balls.
That’s what I was thinking! It’s like a miniature version of that ice maker he reviewed before!
@@betelguse16 definitely seems misleading to Market it as Dippin Dots.
This is honestly intended as a toy product. It's only intended to provide some play value for your child while providing a foodstuff that's intended to mimic the real thing. For a child, it's probably fine. For an adult, if you want real Dippin' Dots, you have to go them from an actual store.
@@abigguitar the words "for a child it's probably fine" proves to me you don't have children. 😂 you don't understand how a child's expectations work. ❤
@@7-tenI have 5 kids/make 180K a year and they’d be just fine with something like this I think you’re just spoiling your kids 😂
The one thing I'm already noticing, is the dispenser even necessary? Couldn't they just sell the trays with the funnel? 🤔 🤷♂️
I was thinking the exact same thing.
i was just about to say that. seems totally unnecessary.
The only reason i could think they would have the dispenser is to make it fun for kids.
It's a gimmick that just makes it possible to charge more.
I was just thinking this exact same thing.
Dipndots Can only be made using liquid nitrogen, so I'm not surprised they didnt come out anything like dipndots
Yeah, DipnDots are surprisingly complex to make, much more than most people would expect. But yes the liquid nitrogen is pretty much essential to make DipnDots.
So making them at home is impossible without the machinery and access to liquid nitrogen.
And it's ice cream not soda
@10191927 the machinery isn't needed just need to be able to make drops. When I worked in kitchen as a chef my head chef wanted to do a little special and we did home made dip and dots. It really wasn't that hard to figure out we took a. Bowl of liquid nitrogen then filled large syringes with the ice cream base and then just made drops with the syringe of the ice cream mix right into the liquid nitrogen then scoped it out directly into the blast chiller. Boom dipnbots
A real dippin dots maker would probably be a whole-ass science lab lol
You're not far off. It takes a lot of high-end machinery to make them. They were also made by accident.
This
@@cujoedaman yeah the Half As Interesting episode on them was great. Absolutely wild to learn Dippin Dots is also partially responsible for the fake meat I love so much!
😂 you need liquid nitrogen,… imagine 5 yo kids playing with nitrogen 😂
It would take liquid nitrogen.
The number one flaw of this is that this isn't a Dippin' Dots maker. It just makes tiny frozen juice ice cubes. It's essentially an ice pop maker. Every time I've had Dippin' Dots, it's been ice cream and not little mini ice pop balls. I've only encountered "Dippin' Dots" twice and both times were at theme parks.
Gas stations sell them round here
Ditto
@@Lolcow43Those aren't real. You have to store real dipping dots at -35 or more. The ones at gas stations are made with an emulsifier that helps it keep its form. Real dipping dots are an ice cream dripped into liquid nitrogen. That's why they have to be stored so cold.
They sell them at my local convenience store (Wawa) but I have never actually tried them.
@@Facetiously.EsotericThe one I've seen for sale were in a special freezer unit so I assumed it stored them at a colder temp than the normal freezers.
Dippin’ Dots has an entire subsidiary focused on cryogenics as a result of the technology they developed originally to store the ice cream pellets.
A little surprised that he didn't try Melted Ice Cream in the dispenser.
That looks like a whole lot of work for a few tablespoons of frozen treat.
It’s for kids, keeps them occupied lol
The dippin dots that you get from the grocery store aren't even the real thing, though they aren't bad. Real dippn dots require temperatures below what a regular freezer can do as they're flash frozen with liquid nitrogen when they're made and require special freezers to store them.
There used to be retail outlets that you could go to to get the dippin dots but now there are vending machines that actually give you a cup of the pre-made product. They give you a selection of four flavors. I remember I didn't like it very much because it hurt my tongue and it was difficult to even taste anything because it was so freaking cold. Basically it's like sticking your tongue to a pole when you're outside in the cold. It's not a pleasant sensation.
@@marciwhitman3513 Hi Marci. You took the words out of my mouth! The only time I eat dippin' dots now is when I'm at a professional baseball game when it's really hot and humid!
@@marciwhitman3513 Right? I love dippin' dots but I always gotta let them turn halfway to soup before I can taste any flavors other than acute frostbite
the ones you get in the store are the real thing. they have their own special freezers that are below -35. have you ever noticed the dippin dots are ALWAYS in their own top sliding freezer and never with everything else? you can easily store dippin dots if you have them at the right temp..
@@newp0rt Not at my local grocers. The dippin dots sit next to the ice cream cookies and ice cream cones along with all the other novelty treats.
What kills me about a lot of these products is I would buy them if it was simplified. Give me the trays and the cup for $10 or so and I will just pour my drink into the fill reservoir directly. Skip the stupid stand and dispensers 😂
yea but with out the flashy overly complex ceremony to make it seem like your doing something amazing when you really aren't then how will we convince you that it's not a total waste of money?
@@CrossRoadsOfTimeYou're*
I had these as a kid. I loved them for what they were and didn’t compare them to the ones you’d get at parks.
When this thing first came out they sold packets of flavors, like banana, cotton candy, and others. I absolutely LOVED the cotton candy one. They were a lot better when you had the flavor packets rather than just using drinks.
They were more creamy too.
My first thought was that there was no way it'd be even remotely close, especially because I think you'd need dry ice or something. It doesn't even really seem like a good activity for kids because you're guaranteed to make a sugary, sticky mess. Just use some ice cube trays to freeze your juice of choice and smash the cubes in a ziplock. Watching the moulds fill up is pretty satisfying though.
Ice + blender + any juice/soft drink = awesome frozen treat. Just blend up the ice and pour your drink over it and you get flavored shaved ice.
real dippin dots are made using liquid nitrogen. it freezes the, instantly which gives them the creamy texture. just some crushed or blended ice cubes made from juice works way better
My first thought was "What the hell is a dipping dot?" I had no context as to what I was seeing until the end. And then I was still confused.
a more accurate home re-creation is to make "nice cream" (aka frozen bananas) in a food processor and stop when it hits the "crumbly" stage. The texture will be almost exactly like dippin dots.
Dippin Dots are creamy…like ice cream I mean. This looks like a ton of work for very little pay off. Very informative video! Thank you! ❤️🙏🏻
It could work as an improvised liquor dispenser.
reminds me of a Absinthe fountain...
@@mastertravelerseenitall298 Yes it does! I knew it looked familiar.
Liquor already comes in a dispenser -- the bottle.
I remember seeing the vending machine that used suction to lift the cup and dispense it when it first came out at a movie theaters. That on its own was very cool and the dots were sweet as well
maybe the dispenser can be used for those recipes?
like say you have coconut water in one of the bottles, and pineapple juice in another
fill half the funnel with coconut and the other half with pineapple.
edit: maybe name it the Snorb Maker
(Snorb = Snow and Orb)
Definitely not wasting my money on this. Thanks James for another funny item and review
This review was too kind.
I love how your respectfully sarcastically condescending, your explanations are so clear and concise. Thank you for the time you take doing these.
you could probably just fill up the ice tray you got at the dollar store with those juices, and you'll get the same thing. Or they should just sell the molds and the injector, no need for that big thing.
Well, kids need things to fiddle with for the experience of the product. The thing looks cheap because they didn’t want to really put a ton of thought into the shape or construction of the product, just the experience.
Also, they use to have inside/sell flavor packets you could use for the product and resulting in a more creamy texture.
Well, after seeing it, I do not think it is a $30 item, maybe $12 - $15 and I know you used the coffee but I am a little surprised you didn't try with milk and something to flavor the milk (strawberry) or something, dip-n-dots are icecream. But you showed it isn't worth a $30 price tag. 👋🤠
The 30 dollars comes from
1. It’s a brand
2. It use to come with a ton of flavor packets to last you a while. The flavor packets would be more creamy and not at all just frozen drinks.
And they don’t sell this product anymore. Idk if he said it was the eBay price he paid or what it use to be? Because it was 30 dollars back then.
My apologies if my reply comes off as rude. I hope it just gave more insight!
I am so glad you showed the real ones as I have never heard of them
Your videos are very entertaining to me! You are such a likable guy with interesting products to demonstrate. Thanks!
Kinda looks like Solero Shots which were also little frozen treat balls, but were water-based rather than dairy-based. I think there was a lime flavour and an orange flavour.
Yeah! Those were the ones I had as a kid. I always thought dippin dots was just the american name, but no, they actually look different. The home made ones here look more like the ones I remember liking as a kid.
I think if whole milk, condensed milk, or some sort of milk base would make this thing operate more like regular dip n dots
“Dash of lime juice” enough lime juice to make a grown man look like a puckering cartoon character
Real dipping dots made using liquid nitrogen to freeze them and that's also what gives them that texture.
I never heard of dippin dots before! I want some! 😂
You might have fun trying Japanese candy making kits. What if you used melted ice cream and froze that?
I had a sudden vivid memory return to me while watching this. When my brother and I were little kids, we loved Harry Potter, and our parents bought us this cauldron/alchemy candy maker kit thing. Basically, you poured different powders into plastic cauldrons and beakers while following instructions, and at the end you'd end up with a candy or something. In the end, I don't think a single one of the candies actually came out right. My parents just seemed frustrated by the end of it, and we never did try it again (they sold the powders to make more).
This thing makes me think of that. Like the cauldron candy maker thing, this dippin dots maker is like 90/10 the parents doing all the work. From just trying to pour in the various liquids without making a mess, to storing all the dot trays in the freezer, to scraping them out of it. It feels like this would be incredibly fun for some little kids, but if it is so difficult and tedious for parents to do all the work, what's the point?
In the end, I feel for the team who had to come up with this. It's such a fun design and you can tell they really tried to make it work. Even if they're glorified ice tray popsicles made into spoon-scoopable treats. This product was a challenge for them to make, and they really tried, despite the material budget working against them.
Forgive me for making an unofficial supplementary review of Mr. Freakin's official one. But props to Mr. Freakin' for bringing back this long forgotten memory and making me want some dippin' dot for the first time since I was a kid. ...I don't even know if I have any still-open malls nearby anymore.
I remember using this device as a kid. I was very disappointed due to it just being frozen juice that wouldn't break apart as easily as expected. I stuck to standard popsicle makers after using this.
How long ago was that?
Another great video my dude. Keep ‘em coming.
Also, the beard looks seriously nice. A bit jealous. You make it look so easy because I’m fighting a beard monster of my own and one like yours is the end goal. Cheers bud.
Good review!
To make dipping dots, you would need a caviar box. Or a spherication syringe and drop it into liquid nitrogen.
I wonder if a similar tray/mold that's more flexible would work better
Crazy. Could achieve the same results with only half of the parts. BTW, where do you store the massive amounts of junk you accumulate?
He said in his garage in storage boxes
i remember seeing commercials for these on tv when i was a kid! as an adult, it’s so funny seeing how over engineered these things were just so kids could think they were doing some crazy black magic
The real dippin dots are made with nearly melting ice cream dripped into liquid nitrogen, from my understanding
The sound that it makes when it's dispensing is satisfying
Just plain chocolate dippin’ dots are still one of my all time favorite treats!
Regardless of the fact you can't make proper dippin dots without liquid nitrogen; the stand and bottles are completely superfluous, all you need for the same outcome is the molds and funnel
I think froyo would pair really well with this, not really dip n dots but probably a lot closer then anything used in the video.
Oh we used to have one of these! We used to stretch a water balloon over the tops of the pens instead of using the caps, it works a lot better.
this video unlocked some repressed memories of dippin dots. Shame they are pretty much discontinued now and don't make this product anymore cuz I'd still be buying them.
Did you get to experience the cotton candy flavor packet? That was my favorite one!
@@Xero.mp3 Yeah cotton candy had the strongest taste for me so I'd usually get that flavor.
Ice cube tray and tooth picks seems more fun than all this
That's what I was about to say, and what we use to do as 80's kids till I got a Snoopy snow cone maker as a birthday gift lol!
"Mom, can I get some Dippin' Dots?"
"Shut up Timmy! we can make Dippin' Dots at home!"
I used to have one of these years ago. They used to come with flavor packets, I wonder if they still make them of If they are discontinued.
Omg!! Dipping dots were my niece's favorite treats when she little. Whenever i had play date with her she would always wanted me to take her to the mall for dipping dots.
The best informative video I have ever watched. Thank you for making this video. And for all the info and details. You're the best.
Without Liquid Nitrogen it can't be Dip & Dots.. More like Icey balls
I genuinely have been craving dippindots for years. They don’t sell them in the UK 😢
If you didn't put ice cream mix into in, you're not getting ice cream out of it. Pretty simple.
Just a hint…when u added the oat milk to the mango drink, that sounded delicious until u decided to add a hint of lime juice…sour flavors and milk never go well…tastes like expired milk
Slush puppy has reinvented itself in the UK.
New machine and Syrups are available
50's style
And even a new milk shake machine.
(That most people buy accidently thinking its a slushie mashine
Massive slushie brand writing, very small milk shake written on the bottom)
And Soda streams are back out on the shelves too
But we have never had this Gizmo
Great shout using coffee.
I made a few iced caramel coffee ice lollies last month, epic tasting
But pina colada Mocktail was the best.
Tried most PRIME flavours too, ksi mango was the best
1:08. Oh, man! That did me in so badly! Haha. I don't think i ever saw you tear the instructions before.
Love all your videos, keep up the fantastic work.
Take a shot every time James says "we shall see"
I'm down for that!
I had one of these as a kid 😂. What a hit of nostalgic.
The end result looks identical to Solero Shots. I'm not sure if it was available in the US or only in Europe.
It's been discontinued so I can see the nostalgia factor in making your own.
I'd skip the dispenser though and just fill straight with the funnel! 😅
I used to love those, they haven't been sold in Sweden since 2001😢
I'm in the US and have never ever heard of them (not sure how old they are, I have lived in UK.. still.. I'm going to look them up now)
Ok I looked them up, are they the same thing as Calippo shots? They are still in EU. I've never seen them in the US but they might have been at carnivals and fairs... (which have funnel cake so I would have ignored anything else 😂)
Yeah! They really do! I always thought that Dippin dots were just the American name, but no, they're apparently entirely different
Curious what would stop you from just pouring the liquid into the mold. Basically JUST using the molds and see if that works. If so, just buy a cheap mold and call it a day. Less space, less mess, less money.
Seems like too much trouble for frozen juice, I've never had dippin dots so don't know what they taste like but when I want a frozen treat I just get the frozen fruit in the freezer section, typically strawberry slices & pineapple chunks, very tasty, & healthier
Oh, I used to have this when I was little. I would mix milk with vanilla extract like my older brother showed me and make that into dip in dots.
If I still had this I would instead use cake batter flavoring
Did he lick the orange dispenser? He said it's mango flavored! Also, what did he expect frozen juices/beverages to taste like?
Thx so much for sharing…really enjoy your reviews!
We got this for our son on Xmas but it has a different nozzle. I thought it'd be cool because he loves dipping dots but it's a glorified ice tray at the end of the day.. he likes it but mehh..
One thing he likes is my ghetto rootbeer floats where I use a regular sweet coffee creamer mixed with rootbeer so we mixed it and made dots outta it..
I came up with it when we ran outta vanilla icecream and the sweet cream coffee creamer is basically like melted vanilla icecream. Tastes identical to it in a root beer float
lol you have to make Dipping dots at -325F and store them at -40. So just slightly off.
Fill it with melted ice cream and put it in a cooler with dry ice lol
Omg I had one of these as a kid…nothing like the real dippin dots, but it was the experience that counted 😂
Spray mold with silicone spray befo=e use.
I used to have the ICEE maker as a kid growing up. It was a lot more simple than this. I feel like this is a bit excessive with the outcome it gives.
One never knows what they'll learn about watching this channel. Occasionally will see a gadget that's a newfangled variation on something else which is familiar. However, have never heard of, or seen, Dippin' Dots. Can see the appeal of the original, but a whole lotta effort, bit of a mess, with this contraption given the results.
Really enjoy your highly entertaining reviews
They are frozen ice pops. Dippin dots are made with liquid nitrogen.
I'm sure it would be too thick to work, but if it did, I'm curious if you made a homemade smothie if it would be closer to real dots 🤔
I worked for unilever in one of there ice cream factories. We made a similar product to dip n dots. It’s a pretty simple process. You spray the cream or juice from shower nozzles and they fall into a large conveyer belt. The conveyor belt is in a large box with nitrogen. The temp inside is about -120. This product is nowhere near what the process is in real life.
I've never heard of dippin' dots but after watching your review I'm pretty sure I didn't miss anything.
No the real Dippin Dots are a wonderful treat they sell at the mall or at theme parks. And nothing comes close to the real thing, so don't let this cheap imitation whatchamajig sway you from trying the real thing. Mmm good 😋
Thank you.
Ahhh another addition for James' Bone Yard....Happy Tuesday! 😊
I bet it wouldn't be too bad if you made an ice cream base (cream, milk, sugar) whip it up a little bit so it's fluffy but still runny and use that. Then it will be more like ice cream instead of ice cubes.
I don’t know if I’m the only one that noticed or not, but he complained about how difficult some of them came out but he also didn’t use the same technique lol So it’s not really that fair. I think the twisting helped as you can see the balls look lighter as they release from the sides also pushing on the back seems to have helped them pop out.
"These are Dippin' Dots...these are..."
Me: chickpeas?
A proper dots maker would use something like dry ice to rapidly chill drops like how the real dots are made with liquid nitrogen
Can you add melted ice cream to the molds to make them more like dip n dots? Sorry if asked before me I just thought to ask not read other comments!!
there are several issues with this product it seems. First is the lack of recipe or instructions. to make this more dip and dots like texture you would have to make an ice cream base and then make a thick syrup out of the fruit flavors you want to use and mix that with the cream mixture. The reason you are getting a slush like texture is because of the water content in the juice. im thinking your coffee one may have been closer to the correct texture. In ice cream it is the fats that give it a creamy like texture. Also, dip and dots were kept at a temp below freezing (i believe) so they could keep their shape in the carts they were served of. (the first time i had them was at a local water park in the middle of summer). The second issue is with the over all design. id think to make the dots form correctly in a tray similar to what i given, the tray would need to have the dot indention on bot sides (think of a cake pop mold design). The funnel and the bottles tray should be all you need.... the other stuff is just in the way. you could also just use condiment bottles as well. this looks like a toy food making item that is mainly designed to be an impulse buy "for kids." when i was little there was a snoopy branded snow cone machine. Did it work.. well sort of. it made a mess and you got the same laughably small portion for your efforts. im thinking i may be able to replicate something similar with a mini chocolate chip mold i have, some condiment bottles and a cookie sheet. im sure this will still be quite the mess though. lol
On Amazon UK this is £68 which is more than double the US price. Then again neither myself nor anyone I have spoken to knows what Dippin Dots are so it is probably a US import.
"My fingers are covered in coke" if only I had a dollar for everytime I've said that in my life. I'd be rich! Lol
Milk + Lime Juice is making my stomach bubble
So, there will never be a "home" Dippin' Dots maker. Dippin' Dots started as a project to make cryogenically frozen feed for animals before the realization came that if you made ice cream with it, it was really tasty. It requires storage at below -40 so specialized coolers are required. This is why you can't get them at grocery stores. All this is doing basically is making pebbles of ice.
I have never tried Dippin' Dots, which surprises me since I have a love of ice cream 🤷🏼♀️
I'll stick to my Hawaiian Shaved Ice machine
Dip n dots is Ice cream, don’t understand how this is even a comparison. You should have made an ice cream base and done this.
The only way it will be actual dippin dots is if you put melted ice cream in there. Dippin dots is created by thinly pouring ice cream mixture into basically liquid nitrogen.
I'd imagine that tray part is made in china. Looks exactly like my ice ball tray. Though smaller than that, same color though
"My fingers are covered in coke." What is things Don Jr. would say? Alex.
I never had dipndots. Enjoyed thr review. I actually don't know what to think. But I'm sure if you make them for kids, I think they will love them.
You can buy real dipping dots online, straight from the company, either in large bulk bags (for parties) or smaller single serve bags. They ship it with a brick of solid co2 to keep it at -40 degrees.
Maybe try some melted ice cream? I know they still won't be the same as using nitrogen, but I'm curious.
Just started the video. I am so hoping this thing works. I'm expecting it won't but my hope is alive for now lol
Juice and soda? Isn't "Dippin' Dots" ice cream? At least it is down the shore in NJ....
I'm going to guess ahead of time that the primary issue with the machine is it doesn't freeze them correctly. This based on the fact that Dippin' Dots are normally stored in the negative double digits.
Citrus and dairy are like oil and water
I love Dip N Dots, but can never find them where I live. They remind me of the texture of a Pudding Pop, but in the form of tiny balls. Would like to see them made using pudding mix.
Dip n dots..... The ice cream of the future for the last 40 years 😂😂😂
