If Mika cannot mentally handle playing hockey right now, he needs to be placed into the player assistance program and take time to get his head straight. Ultimately, more important than hockey and his mental state right now is clearly leading to significantly worse effort, preparation, execution, and physicality on the rink.

For me, the moment that symbolized this Rangers team is the first goal they given up in game 7 of the 2023 series against Jersey, the shorthanded goal scored by Michael McLeod. A real horror show where Ondrej Palat outplayed Kreider, Fox(specially those two) and Zibanejad. I know the Rangers reached the semi-finals the year before and the year after but that play(and the way they lost that series) says it all.

Their weakness has been obvious going back to 2024 playoffs. They gave-up 70 shot attempts against Carolina and 90+ against Florida. That equates to easy entries and extended shifts by both Carolina and Florida in the Ranger D zone...and nobody forechecks or plays tough along the boards. Now they can't pass or defend open ice. A bunch of slugs.

I went to a game at the Garden this year for the first time since moving away from the area. I've never heard fans expect that much while cheering that little. The garden has turned into a crappy social event instead of a place to watch hockey. The real fans are priced out, the people who do spend that ridiculous amount of money aren't even exited to be there. I was the only person cheering in the entire *section*.

If by the grace of God we could get rid of Mika, do that too. Call up Rempe, Harpur, Ruhwedel...etc. Let Berard, Cuylle, Edstrom play bigger roles to fill the gap. While I understand it and know that it will never change, I’m tired of the same old trope that athletes put out with disdain whenever they’re unhappy with a roster move… “Well, at the end of the day, it’s a business”. That is a complete mischaracterization of the job that owners and general managers have to do in a tight cap sport.
Coaches and players play a game for a living and when they don’t produce, there are consequences. Make no mistake that general managers, who make a lot less money than players and coaches, are also playing a game, and when they fail to perform there are direct consequences. A GM is charged with the task of strategically distributing a finite budget to put the puzzle pieces together with the goal of bringing a championship to the franchise. And if they fail to do so, they lose their job and their income. Meanwhile, coaches and players can get fired or released and still keep all or a portion of their 7 or 8 figure income. They take it personally when they think they are worth more than the GM is able to pay and completely discount the incredibly complicated maneuvering a GM must do. Just look at the massive obstacle that Drury has to work around with a #1 center is taking up over $8 million of the cap and playing like a minor leaguer that wouldn’t even make the team. He can’t trade him, he can’t send him to the minors, and he can’t release him without 90% of his contract still counting against the cap. I’ve heard that some players are upset over how Goodrow and Truba were handled. If Mika or Kreider or any other entitled players are quitting on the team because they’re upset at necessary roster moves, perhaps they should reevaluate their own contracts to allow for more money to be passed around…which, of course would never happen. Athletes act like management is cold-hearted and only about the bottom line when in fact, they are simply playing the game within the game in a hard cap system. A game that has real life consequences when they don’t perform. It’s time for the players to pull up their big-boy pants and recognize that they’re supposed to EARN their massive contracts and understand that the whole organization is playing a game to win the ultimate prize.

Jacob Trouba needed to be traded. Just watching the postgame interviews, you could tell how deflated this team looks and is, I can only imagine how bad it must be if people have access to speak with the team. Mika should be scratched, he is a sensitive individual from all accounts, but he is way to much in his head. Miller wanting a Significant pay raise is laughable and I honestly think he would be a prime trade target. We need a leader who has won before, Stamkos fits the bill, but is he over his prime? More trades i think will happen, its just a matter of when at this point.

Cuylle plays like a leader. Hope the Rangers coaching staff doesn't ruin Mancini with the stick check keep the puckhandler wide mentality that is the way they have changes Lindgren and Schneider now into. Those 2 hit puckhandlers, with good old hip checks, entering the zone now they turn their body so they can poke at the puckhandler and keep them towards the boards as they chase them around the zone. That is the best way for Fox and Jones. But Not guys who can use their bodies. You have to teach a player to use their strengths not make cookie cutter defense. Miller was never a hitter and should be taught how to use his size. And it doesn't look like this team wants any of their D-Men to play physical.

I wish that Laf would step up and take advantage of this opportunity and make it his team by showing that passion and fire he played with in juniors. In understanding that this is the NHL and not juniors and that he's no longer a man amongst boys, he most certainly couldn't have lost all of his compete and profound will that he was known for...an elite grinder. I feel as if he was "neutered" stylistically and lost his identity...perhaps indirectly by the "veteran leaders" of the team, and was afraid to step on toes as the new kid on the block. Agree that the core needs to go. Zib if possible but tough with NMC, Kreider, K'Miller should be the first in line. Move out the "Huberdeau" archetypes (who is a nice player but wont drag you into the fight) for the "Fiala/Benn" archetypes (who rarely lose a battle and will.)

I didn't see Trouba's helmet throw as a projection of leadership. More like a temper tantrum. To me he was struggling in that game, he was getting beat by puckhandlers, so he went into his chickenwing checks. Toews then challenged him. Yes this team plays soft. But temper tantrums is not leadership. His actions never helped bring about an ingrained philosophy that the team ever stuck with. Because lashing out isn't the same as creating an aura of confident toughness and grit that could be followed. I never saw Trouba grab and throttle an opposing teams "Tom Wilson" after that guy took a cheap shot at a team mate. To me that would give your team more confidence to hit, knowing your Big Captain had your back. Like a Jamie Benn does. 99% of Trouba's fights were in Self Defense of himself. His last fight as a Ranger was the only time I saw him square off without himself being attacked or harassed, and he had to defend himself.

See you next year folks. We're going to go from winning the president's trophy to not even making the playoffs. Just watch. Sure we locked in the best goalie in the league for the next 8 years but that's all we have right now. I was at that game yesterday and was one of the worst performances I've ever seen out of them. The only one who looked like he was giving it all out there was Panarin. Something absolutely has to be done about Mika. He's -14 now and the first goal against was 100% his fault. It's almost like half the time he's on the ice something bad happens. Something is seriously wrong with this dude. I don't know if it's lack of focus or lack of effort or both but we can't keep pushing him out there like he's going to do anything positive for us. He's done almost nothing since the playoffs last season.

No one gets uncomfortable thinking about playing the Rangers. No one. And, on the front end there needs to be more of a willingness to play in the slot, behind the net and in the corners. The will to go hard to the net. Do the necessary dirty work. It doesn’t seem to be there with this roster.
